Hazakim, (pronounced ha-zah-keem), [1] is a Christian hip hop duo originally from Columbus, Ohio. The group consists of brothers Michael "Mike" Wray and Anthony "Tony" Wray. Hazakim is known for hip hop music that is uniquely Messianic; even rapping and singing in Hebrew, at times, over beats with traditional Mizrahi rhythms. The name Hazakim is a Hebrew word, meaning in English "the strong ones". [2]

Early life

Michael "Mike" Wray, the eldest born, and Anthony "Tony" Wray, the youngest born [3] were brought up in the messianic Jewish movement by their parents. [4] They come from a multi-ethnic family consisting of Portuguese, Jewish, Jamaican, Italian, and Amazigh ancestry. [5]

In episode of The Chopping Block (a Lampmode Records YouTube series), Michael stated that he began listening to Christian Hip Hop in 1986, with Stephen Wiley's "Bible Break". However, he never intended to become a hip hop artist, until upon hearing The Cross Movement's album "Heaven's Mentality"

Music career

Hazakim started making music in 1997. [4] Their first release in 1999 was an independent self-titled EP [6] with three songs, most notably "Liar, Lunatic, Lord, Or Legend" which is the only song from the EP on streaming services. In 2003, the duo came back with another independent EP, "Theophanies EP". [7]

In 2001 they released their first full-length album, also an independent effort aptly titled Hip-Hologetics due to its fusion of rap music and biblical apologetics. [8] They became signed to Lamp Mode Recordings prior to their 2009 release, Theophanies . [9] Their sophomore release under Lamp Mode entitled Son of Man was released on September 23, 2014; the eve of Rosh Hashanah in light of the album's eschatological focus. [10] [11] This exposure helped the duo crack the Billboard charts, twice. [12]

In January 2016 the brothers released a music video for a single entitled "Don't Forget the Ayin" which was shot on location in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem Israel. According to the duo, the song was created to help "remove the stigma" surrounding Yeshua among Israelis, in what they call "the Jewish reclamation of Jesus." [13]

In December 2018 it was announced that Hazakim was set to release another album titled Origins, though no release date had been given. [14] On February 1, 2019, they released Origins on Wrath and Grace Records, a burgeoning Christian hip-hop label. [15] Reviews of the album were overwhelmingly positive; with some stating that Origins is the duo's best release to date, while others have compared its impact to their earlier Theophanies . The focus of Origins is to provide an argument or defense of biblical creationism and intelligent design. [16] Origins includes production from Hazakim, as well as contributions from composer John Campbell, as well as hip-hop producers SPEC, Sean Rocktight Jones (Walter Rocktight) and Devin Morrison.

In addition to vocals, Mike and Tony do the majority of their own production. The brothers now reside in Broward County, Florida where they are both married with children.

The label has released the Who Is KB? mixtape in 2011, Weight & Glory, on July 17, 2012, the 100 EP on March 4, 2014, Tomorrow We Live on April 21, 2015, and Today We Rebel on October 20, 2017. He is also a member of the label's collective 116 Clique.

Gravity is the sixth studio album by American Christian hip hop artist Lecrae, released on September 4, 2012. The album features appearances from Big K.R.I.T., Mathai, Ashthon Jones, Sho Baraka and Mali Music, along with labelmates Trip Lee, Andy Mineo, Derek Minor, who was formerly known as PRo, and Tedashii. Producers on the album include DJ Khalil, Street Symphony's Heat Academy, and The Watchmen. The first single off the album, "I Know", was released on July 24, 2012, and was followed by "Tell the World" featuring Mali Music on August 15, 2012, and "Mayday" featuring Big K.R.I.T. and Ashthon Jones on August 30, 2012. Reach Records released five music videos for the album: "Lord Have Mercy", featuring Tedashii along with No Malice of Clipse, on August 1, 2012, "Tell the World", featuring Mali Music, on October 19, 2012, "Mayday", featuring Big K.R.I.T. and Ashthon Jones, on December 13, 2012, "Fakin'", featuring Thi'sl, on February 1, 2013, and "Confe$$ions", featuring David Banner, on April 30, 2013.

Derek Johnson, Jr., better known by his stage name Derek Minor and former stage name PRo, is an American Christian hip hop artist, singer, record producer, entrepreneur, actor, and screenwriter. He co-founded the hip-hop record label Reflection Music Group (RMG) with Doc Watson, and signed to Reach Records in a joint venture between the two labels in 2011. In 2012, Johnson announced that he had changed his stage name from Pro to Derek Minor. In 2014, he announced that as his two-album contract with Reach was complete, he would no longer be publishing releases through that label.

Social Club Misfits, known as Social Club from 2012 until 2016, is a Christian hip hop duo from Miami, Florida made up of rappers FERN and Marty Mar. They formed their musical partnership in 2011 and released their first free album, entitled Misfits, on November 27, 2012. Then, the duo released two EPs entitled Misfits-EP, released on March 26, 2013, and Rejects. on April 2, 2013. The latter garnering some charting success. The third free album from the duo came out on September 13, 2013, entitled Summer of George. Their breakthrough album, Misfits 2, was self-released on April 29, 2014, and Us was released on March 24, 2015.

<i>Anomaly</i> (Lecrae album) 2014 studio album by Lecrae

Anomaly is the seventh studio album by American Christian hip hop artist Lecrae, released on September 9, 2014, through Reach Records. The album features appearances from Crystal Nicole, Kari Jobe, and For King & Country, along with label-mate Andy Mineo. Anomaly met with a positive critical reception, and the song "Nuthin", released for streaming as a single on July 1, 2014, was nominated for the 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards in the best Impact Track category. The album also fared well commercially, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with over 88,000 copies sold. It also debuted at No. 1 on the Top Gospel Albums chart, marking the first time that any artist has ever topped both the 200 and Gospel charts. Oluwaseun Oluwatosin Otukpe who goes by the stage name S.O. or Seun Otukpe in full, is a Nigerian Christian hip hop musician of British citizenship, currently based in Texas, United States. So It Begins was released independently in 2011. Lamp Mode Recordings released his second studio album So It Continues in 2012, and this album would be his breakthrough release on the Billboard charts.

Aaron Rivera, who goes by the stage name Asaiah Ziv. Rivera, formerly known as KIDD, is an American hip hop musician. His first studio album, Murder My Flesh, was released by Christian hip hop label Infiltrate Music in 2013, and was a Billboard chart breakthrough release. He subsequently released a free extended play in 2014, Hipsavvy: The Introduction, also with the label Infiltrate Music. On February 1, 2016, Rapzilla, which is run by the owners of Infiltrate, revealed that Rivera no longer identified as a Christian, and that he was released from his contract.

Theophanies was the second album from hip hop duo Hazakim. The album was released on June 23, 2009, through Lamp Mode Recordings. Although Theophanies was Hazakim's second album, it was their first studio album to be released on a record label with national distribution. Theophanies helped to establish Hazakim's unique sound and approach to lyricism in the christian hip hop genre.

<i>Son of Man</i> (album) 2014 studio album by Hazakim

Son Of Man was the third album from Hazakim, and the second album they released on Lamp Mode Recordings. The album became available for commercial purchase on September 23, 2014, Rosh Hashanah of that year. Son Of Man was the group's first album to make it onto the Billboard chart; peaking at numbers 10 and 40 in both Christian and Gospel music categories respectively.
