Heavy Deavy Skull Lover is the fourth album by American psychedelic rock band the Warlocks. It was released on October 7, 2007 by record label Tee Pee.
With this album, the Warlocks signed to Tee Pee Records, a small psychedelia-themed record label also home to band cohorts, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, who reportedly requested that the Warlocks be signed. [1]
The album was recorded as a stripped down four-piece, in departure from the octet, dual drummer formation of previous releases. The album is produced by Rod Cervera, who had previously worked on the Warlocks' debut album, Rise and Fall .
In contrast to the more refined sounding and major label released Surgery , the album features a rougher and less melodic sound, described by Drowned in Sound as akin to an "elongated jamming session". [2]
Critics noted the album's darker sound than previous Warlocks albums. Describing the album's sound and mood, Pitchfork Media wrote: "The end goal here is the Cure: Live at Pompeii – lo-fi dirges heavy on slow-motion distortion, but with Hecksher's usual stoned-out sighs replaced by more pronounced, mopey affectations. That the bookend tracks both feature the word 'death' in the title offers some indication of the kind of mood he's in, and the pervasively dreary mood makes it hard to tell where the pained opener 'The Valley of Death' ends and the quicksand-slow descent of 'Moving Mountains' begins." [3] Spin described the album as the Warlocks being "more funereal than ever". [4] PopMatters countered, writing "Though 'The Valley of Death' starts the record off with a dreary note, the record itself is altogether quite glorious, buzzing and sticky with muck that's convincingly part saccharine." Heavy Deavy Skull Lover received a mixed-to-positive critical reception.
Drowned in Sound wrote "The Warlocks may just have released their best album to date. While not containing the obvious singles of Phoenix , the album that ultimately lifted them into the spotlight of their own accord rather than via associations with co-conspirators, Heavy Deavy Skull Lover is by far their most ambitious, sprawling and intensely defiant collection of sounds [...] this is the 21st Century psychedelic sound of the West Coast in all its glory. Simply immense." [2] The Guardian described the album as "potent stuff, but not something you'd want to listen to every day". [6]
Spin , on the other hand, described it as "a middling version of shoegaze for people who stare at their hands." [4]

Jerusalem and Dopesmoker are two versions of the third album by the American heavy metal band Sleep. The albums were released in 1999 and 2003 respectively. The music for these albums was written during a four-year period when the group was working on a single song that was around an hour in length. Sleep had signed with London Records, which financed the album. When recording had finished, London Records was unhappy with the finished product and refused to release it. The album was later released in various forms by different record labels. All versions of the album received very positive reception from music critics, who described it as a high-water mark in both the stoner metal and doom metal genres.
Deafheaven is an American post-metal band formed in 2010. Originally based in San Francisco, the group began as a two-piece with singer George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, who recorded and self-released a demo album together. Following its release, Deafheaven recruited three new members and began to tour. Before the end of 2010, the band signed to Deathwish Inc. and later released their debut album Roads to Judah, in April 2011. A follow-up album, Sunbather, was released in 2013 to wide critical acclaim, becoming one of the best reviewed albums of the year in the United States. In 2015 the band released their third album, New Bermuda, and in 2018 their fourth, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love.
Jesters of Destiny is a heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, which was formed in 1984 by Bruce Duff and guitarist Ray Violet. Evolving from a recording project spearheaded by Violet, who was working as the house engineer for Dawnbreaker studio in San Fernando, CA, the band recorded what would be the first two Jesters songs during the project,which was instigated in order to come up with commercial jingles. The songs were "Diggin' That Grave" and "End of Time." The band presented the songs to Metal Blade Records, who included "End of Time" on Metal Massacre V collection. It closed the LP, which include early tracks by Overkill, Fates Warning, Voi Vod and Metal Church. The band then signed to Metal Blade, but due to the band not being strictly heavy metal, the label created a subsidiary, Dimension Records, which released the band's debut album, Fun at the Funeral, in 1986, and an EP, In a Nostalgic Mood, in 1987, during their first tenure. Following ",,,Mood," Metal Blade dropped the band. They demo-ed a number of songs for a planned third LP to be titled, No Laughing Matter, but we're unable to land a new recording contract. They broke up in 1988. During their run, a number of lead guitarists and drummers were part of the band, including on drums, David Buzzelli, Louie Schilling, Walin' Jennings Morgan, Dave Kuzma, Blaze; and on guitar, Sickie Wifebeater, Michael Montano and Brian Butler.
Whirr is an American shoegaze band from the San Francisco Bay Area. The group formed in 2010, originally as Whirl, but had to legally change its name after a woman performing acoustic covers of Black Sabbath songs trademarked the name and threatened a lawsuit. Whirr's shoegaze sound is often compared to My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. Founding guitarist Nick Bassett also played in the band Deafheaven surrounding and including the release of their 2011 album Roads to Judah.
