Zapata County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census,its population was 13,889. Its county seat is Zapata. The county is east of the Mexico–United States border and is named for Colonel JoséAntonio de Zapata,a rancher in the area who rebelled against Mexico.

It is home to some of the poorest cities in the nation,as well as many unincorporated,persistent poverty communities called colonias. A large seasonal influx occurs of "winter Texans" —people who come down from the north for the winter and then return north before summer arrives.

The Treviño–Uribe Rancho is a historic fortified home at the junction of Trevino and Uribe Streets in the small frontier town of San Ygnacio,Texas. With a construction history dating to 1830,it is one of the oldest surviving buildings from the period of Spanish-Mexican settlement of the north bank of the lower Rio Grande. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998.

Since no Democratic candidate received over 50% in the first round of the primary,a runoff election was required on May 27,2014. David Alameel,who came in first in the primary,won the runoff and became his party's nominee. In the general election,Cornyn defeated Alameel in a landslide.

Katz is a lawyer by profession who has been active in local and national government and politics for many years. He has been a member of the Democratic National Committee where he helped draft the party's platform for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Ambassador Katz holds a B.A. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a J.D. from the American University Washington College of Law in Washington D.C. He was raised in a Jewish family in St. Louis,the son of Fred and Eileen Katz. His father escaped Nazi Germany for the United States where he worked as a salesman;and was one of the original founders of the St. Louis Holocaust Museum. Katz graduated from University City High School.
The Porvenir massacre was an incident on January 28,1918,outside the village of Porvenir,in Presidio County,Texas,in which Texas Rangers and local ranchers,with the support of U.S. Cavalry,killed 15 unarmed Mexican American boys and men. The Texas Rangers Company B had been sent to the area to stop banditry after the Brite Ranch raid. Despite having no evidence that the Porvenir villagers had been involved in recent thefts or the killings of ranchers,the Rangers separated 15 men and boys from the rest of the village and shot them on a nearby hill.
