Hemnesberget is a village in the municipality of Hemnes in Nordland county, Norway. It is located on the Hemnes peninsula which lies on the south side of the Ranfjorden. [3] Hemnes Church is located in this village.

The 1.12-square-kilometre (280-acre) village has a population (2018) of 1,259 and a population density of 1,124 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,910/sq mi). [1]

World War II

The village was partially destroyed in the land fighting first and the later by naval gunfire, with the sinking of the Hurtigruten ship SS Nordnorge and the coaster Ranheim, in the days following 10 May 1940. The fighting occurred when Hemnesberget became the objective of a German operation to bypass Allied strong points during the Norwegian Campaign, codenamed Wildente.

Korgen is connected by the European route E6 highway to the nearby towns of Mo i Rana and Mosjøen. The eastern end of the Korgfjell Tunnel is located in Korgen. The village of Bleikvassli lies about 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the south along the Norwegian County Road 806. The 0.9-square-kilometre (220-acre) village has a population (2017) of 878 which gives the village a population density of 976 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,530/sq mi). The Ranfjorden is a fjord in the Helgeland district of Nordland county, Norway. The largest part of the fjord is in the municipality of Rana, but the fjord also passes through the municipalities of Hemnes, Vefsn, Leirfjord, Nesna, and Dønna. The Ranelva river meets the Ranfjord in at the town of Mo i Rana at the innermost part of the fjord. It then flows to the west for about 68 kilometres (42 mi) to where it meets the sea along the border of Dønna and Nesna municipalities.

The 12.59-square-kilometre (4.86 sq mi) lake is regulated by a dam. The water flows out to the south and then down a 64-metre (210 ft) tall waterfall on the river Bleikvasselva.

Hemnes Church is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Hemnes Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Hemnesberget. It is the church for the Hemnes parish which is part of the Indre Helgeland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland. The white, wooden church was built in an octagonal-cruciform style in 1872 using plans drawn up by the architect Niels Stockfleth Darre Eckhoff. The church seats about 800 people.

Bardalssjøen or Bardal is a village in the municipality of Leirfjord in Nordland county, Norway. The village is located along the south coast of the Ranfjorden, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of the village of Hemnesberget. The village surrounds the Bardalselva river which flows into the fjord. The Bardal Church was built in 1887 on a hill near the mouth of the river. The Bardal area has historically been part of both Nesna Municipality and Hemnes Municipality, but it has been part of Leirfjord Municipality since 1964.

SS <i>Nordnorge</i> (1923)

SS Nordnorge was a Norwegian steamship built in 1923–24 by Trondhjems mekaniske Værksted, for the Narvik-based Norwegian shipping company Ofotens Dampskibsselskap. First employed on the company's Narvik-Trondheim route, she was transferred to the longer Hurtigruten route in late 1936. Seized by the Germans following their April 1940 attack on Norway, she was used as covert troop ship and was sunk shortly after delivering her cargo of German troops behind Allied lines on 10 May 1940.

Elsfjord is a former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The 280-square-kilometre (110 sq mi) municipality existed from 1929 until its dissolution in 1962. The municipality included the area around the Elsfjorden and the valley leading up to the fjord. The municipality is now a part of Vefsn Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of Elsfjord.
