It was part of the Fosen region. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Kyrksæterøra. Other villages included Heim, Hellandsjøen, Holla, and Vinjeøra. The European route E39 highway runs through the southern part of Hemne.

The village of Bleikvassli lies about 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the south along the Norwegian County Road 806. The 0.9-square-kilometre (220-acre) village has a population (2017) of 878 which gives the village a population density of 976 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,530/sq mi). This makes it the largest urban area in the municipality.

Hemnes Church is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Hemnes Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Hemnesberget. It is the church for the Hemnes parish which is part of the Indre Helgeland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland. The white, wooden church was built in an octagonal-cruciform style in 1872 using plans drawn up by the architect Niels Stockfleth Darre Eckhoff. The church seats about 800 people.
Bardalssjøen or Bardal is a village in the municipality of Leirfjord in Nordland county, Norway. The village is located along the south coast of the Ranfjorden, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of the village of Hemnesberget. The village surrounds the Bardalselva river which flows into the fjord. The Bardal Church was built in 1887 on a hill near the mouth of the river. The Bardal area has historically been part of both Nesna Municipality and Hemnes Municipality, but it has been part of Leirfjord Municipality since 1964.
SS Nordnorge was a Norwegian steamship built in 1923–24 by Trondhjems mekaniske Værksted, for the Narvik-based Norwegian shipping company Ofotens Dampskibsselskap. First employed on the company's Narvik-Trondheim route, she was transferred to the longer Hurtigruten route in late 1936. Seized by the Germans following their April 1940 attack on Norway, she was used as covert troop ship and was sunk shortly after delivering her cargo of German troops behind Allied lines on 10 May 1940.
