Hermanus Koekkoek, sometimes referred to as The Elder (13 March 1815, Middelburg - 5 November 1882, Haarlem) was a Dutch painter, etcher, and graphic artist. He specialized in marine art.

He was a member of the famous Koekkoek Painting Family ; the son of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, and brother of the landscape painters, Barend Cornelis, Johannes and Marinus Adrianus. His sons, Hermanus (the Younger), Willem, Johannes Hermanus Barend, and Hendrik Barend , all became painters. He also had three daughters. [1]
His father specialized in marine art, and gave Hermanus his first art lessons. In 1826, his family moved to Durgerdam, near Amsterdam. Later, he went to Amsterdam, took classes at the Rijksakademie, and established himself as a free-lance artist. Like his father, he focused on marine art, although he also created numerous landscapes. His style was a combination of Realism, and the newer Romantic aesthetic. Influences from the artists of the Dutch Golden Age are clearly visible, as well.
He provided his four sons with their first painting lessons, as well as schooling his contemporary, the etcher Willem Gruyter , in the techniques peculiar to marine painting. His memberships included the Royal Academy of Art , and Arti et Amicitiae, an artists' society in Rotterdam. [1] He won a gold medal at one of their exhibitions in 1875. Many of his works were sold in Germany and England.
In 1882 he moved to Haarlem. He died there that same year, aged sixty-seven. His works may be seen at the Teylers Museum, and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen. The Rijksprentenkabinet of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam has a collection of his drawings.

Adriaen van de Velde, was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and print artist. His favorite subjects were landscapes with animals and genre scenes. He also painted beaches, dunes, forests, winter scenes, portraits in landscapes, as well as mythological and biblical scenes. He belongs to a group of painters referred to as the Dutch Italianate painters, who combined Dutch agricultural landscapes with mythological or Arcadian scenes in Italian settings. His paintings are characterised by their delicate, careful composition and his mastery of lighting effects as well as the human figure.
Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek was a Dutch marine artist. He signed his paintings, and is perhaps better-known as, Jan H. B. Koekkoek.
The Hague School is a group of artists who lived and worked in The Hague between 1860 and 1890. Their work was heavily influenced by the realist painters of the French Barbizon school. The painters of the Hague school generally made use of relatively somber colors, which is why the Hague School is sometimes called the Gray School.

The Eerste Schilderijenzaal, or Painting Gallery I, is one of two art gallery rooms in Teylers Museum and is the oldest art gallery for contemporary Dutch art in the Netherlands. It was built onto the back of Teylers Oval Room in 1838. It was the young museum's first exhibition space for paintings and could be entered through the Oval Room, which was itself located behind the Fundatiehuis, the former home of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst.
