Hesperus Nunatak ( 71°31′S69°21′W / 71.517°S 69.350°W Coordinates: 71°31′S69°21′W / 71.517°S 69.350°W ) is a sharp-pointed nunatak lying 2 nautical miles (4 km) southwest of Titania Peak and about 18 nautical miles (33 km) west of Venus Glacier in the southeastern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was mapped by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys from satellite imagery supplied by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee from association with Venus Glacier, Hesperus being a variant name for the "evening star," Venus. First mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. This feature was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee from association with nearby Uranus Glacier, Titania being one of the satellites of the planet Uranus, the seventh planet of the Solar System.
The Wisconsin Range is a major mountain range of the Horlick Mountains in Antarctica, comprising the Wisconsin Plateau and numerous glaciers, ridges and peaks bounded by the Reedy Glacier, Shimizu Ice Stream, Horlick Ice Stream and the interior ice plateau.
The Prince Charles Mountains are a major group of mountains in Mac. Robertson Land in Antarctica, including the Athos Range, the Porthos Range, and the Aramis Range. The highest peak is Mount Menzies. Other prominent peaks are Mount Izabelle and Mount Stinear. They were mapped from trimetrogon air photography taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, and from survey by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, 1948–50, and so named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee because of the arrangement of the nunataks in a ring, like an atoll.
Bartók Glacier is a glacier, 7 nautical miles (13 km) long and 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide, flowing southwest from the southern end of the Elgar Uplands in the northern part of Alexander Island. It was first photographed from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937, and more accurately mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók.
Cousins Rock is an isolated rock located eastward of the upper part of Berry Glacier and Patton Bluff, about 3.5 nautical miles (6 km) northeast of Coleman Nunatak, in Marie Byrd Land. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1959–65, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Michael D. Cousins, an ionospheric physicist at Siple Station, 1969–70.
Crume Glacier is a tributary glacier, 5 nautical miles (9 km) long, flowing east to enter Ommanney Glacier near the north coast of Victoria Land, Antarctica. The geographical feature was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–63, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for William R. Crume, AS1, U.S. Navy, Support Equipment Maintenance Supervisor with Squadron VX-6 at McMurdo Station, Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island, during Operation Deep Freeze 1968. The glacier lies situated on the Pennell Coast, a portion of Antarctica lying between Cape Williams and Cape Adare.
The Juno Peaks are two steep-sided nunataks with a small rock to the west, forming part of an east-west ridge 6 nautical miles (11 km) southwest of Mimas Peak, lying near the head of Saturn Glacier in southern Alexander Island, Antarctica. They were mapped from trimetrogon air photography taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, and from survey by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, 1948–50. The nunataks were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Juno, one of the asteroids lying between the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter.
Dee Nunatak is a rock nunatak which appears to be within the flow of Garfield Glacier, in the west part of McDonald Heights, Marie Byrd Land. The feature lies 1 nautical mile (2 km) west of Rhodes Icefall. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959–65, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant Thomas H. Dee, U.S. Navy, Medical Officer at Byrd Station, 1970.
Delius Glacier is a glacier, 6 nautical miles (11 km) long and 2 nautical miles (4 km) wide, flowing west from the Elgar Uplands into Nichols Snowfield, in the northern part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first seen from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937. It was more accurately mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and from U.S. Landsat imagery of February 1975. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Frederick Delius, the British composer.
Musson Nunatak is a pyramidal nunatak standing 10 nautical miles (18 km) south of Mount Jackson, at the east margin of the Dyer Plateau of Palmer Land. Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) in 1974. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for John M. Musson, PH2, U.S. Navy, photographer and member of the cartographic aerial mapping crew in LC-130 aircraft of Squadron VXE-6, 1968-69.
The Dione Nunataks are rock exposures at the head of Saturn Glacier, 9 nautical miles (17 km) west of Deimos Ridge in the southeastern part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The nunataks appear to have been first seen from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and roughly mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. They were remapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee from association with Saturn Glacier, Dione being one of the satellites of the planet Saturn.
Palestrina Glacier is a glacier lying in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 11 nautical miles (20 km) long and 8 nautical miles (15 km) wide, flowing west from Nichols Snowfield into Lazarev Bay. The glacier was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Giovanni da Palestrina (1525–1594), Italian composer.
Eureka Glacier is a broad, gently sloping glacier, 18 nautical miles (33 km) long and 17 nautical miles (31 km) wide at its mouth, which flows westward from the west side of Palmer Land into George VI Sound. It is bounded on its north side by the nunataks south of Mount Edgell, on its south side by the Traverse Mountains and Terminus Nunatak, and at its head Prospect Glacier provides a route to the Wordie Ice Shelf. It was first surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill and resurveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. The name, from the ancient Greek word eureka, expresses the triumph of discovery and arose because the BGLE sledge party found their way to George VI Sound via this glacier in 1936.
Flynn Glacier is a glacier about 10 nautical miles (20 km) long, draining eastward from Mount Nares in the Churchill Mountains of Antarctica, and entering Starshot Glacier south of Kelly Plateau. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Commander William F. Flynn (CEC), U.S. Navy, commanding officer Mobile Construction Battalion, Special Detachment Bravo, at McMurdo Sound, winter 1957.
Gibbon Nunatak is an isolated nunatak on the north side of the Wisconsin Range, Antarctica, standing 8 nautical miles (15 km) north of Lentz Buttress on the west side of Davisville Glacier. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–64, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Thomas L. Gibbon, a construction driver in the Byrd Station winter party, 1959.
McKinnis Peak is a peak, 510 metres (1,670 ft) high, 2 nautical miles (4 km) southeast of the Holladay Nunataks in the Wilson Hills of Antarctica. It surmounts the peninsula that is bounded by Tomilin Glacier and Noll Glacier on the west and the Gillett Ice Shelf on the east. The peak was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–63, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Joe D. McKinnis of U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6, an Aviation Electronics Technician and air crewman on LC-130F aircraft in five Operation Deep Freeze deployments through 1969.
Schobert Nunatak is a nunatak overlooking the terminus of Bowman Glacier, standing 4 nautical miles (7 km) east of Mount Dean, at the northeast end of Quarles Range, Queen Maud Mountains. First mapped by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, 1928-30. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for William J. Schobert, aviation electrician and maintenance shop supervisor with U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 for several Deep Freeze operations, 1964-67 period.
Soto Glacier is a glacier about 12 nautical miles (22 km) long, draining southeast along the southwest side of Strømme Ridge and discharging into Odom Inlet, on the east coast of Palmer Land. Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) in 1974. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Luis R. Soto, Argentine oceanographer on the International Weddell Sea Oceanographic Expeditions, 1968 and 1970.
The Holladay Nunataks are a cluster of nunataks 3 nautical miles (6 km) in extent, occupying the central part of the peninsula between the terminus of Tomilin Glacier and the Gillett Ice Shelf. They were mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–63, and were named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Billy W. Holladay, Chief Aviation Electronics Technician, U.S. Navy, who was Maintenance Control Chief at McMurdo Station during Operation Deep Freeze, 1968.
