Hetal Dave (born 8 December 1987) is India's first and only professional female sumo wrestler. [1] [2] In 2008, she made it into the Limca Book of Records. [3] [4]
She participated in the 2009 World Games held in Taiwan, but went out in the first round. [5] [6]
Hetal hails from Mumbai. Her father and brother were very supportive of her interests in pursuing the sport. [7] She is a commerce graduate and also trains students in wrestling and judo in different schools. [8]
Dave is a judo trainer and she started her judo lessons when she was 6. [7] [9]
Dave has no opponents to train with in India and as such has to practice with male players alongside her brother Akshay. India does not have a sumo ring, so she had to practice in natural terrain, and she chose Oval Maidan in South Mumbai. [6]
Her first international championship took place in Estonia in 2008. She came among the global top 8 and was included in a list of 150 fearless women by Newsweek. [10]
After Estonia, Dave has represented India in tournaments at Poland, Finland and Taiwan. At the 2009 World Games, she stood fifth in the women's middleweight category. [11] [12]
Despite sumo wrestling not being amongst the recognized sports in India, Dave has represented India in several competitions. [13]
When she participated in the World Games she was the only female participant from India to represent the country and Sumo out of more than 200 games. She has represented India in competitions in Poland, Finland, Estonia, and Taiwan.
In a season of sports biopics, a biopic on Hetal Dave titled 'Sumo Didi' is being made. The film is directed by Jayant Rohatgi, and stars Shriyam Bhagnani in the title role. The film is produced by Freshlime Films and MA&TH Entertainment and presented by Jio Studios. [14] [15]

Kaido Höövelson is an Estonian politician and former professional sumo wrestler. Making his debut in May 2004, he reached the top division after just two years in sumo in May 2006. After suffering a number of injury problems in 2007 which delayed his progress, he reached the third-highest rank of sekiwake in November 2008, and was promoted to ōzeki rank after finishing the March 2010 tournament with a score of 14–1. He was a tournament runner-up four times before recording a top division championship in the 2012 January tournament. During his career Baruto also earned five special prizes for Fighting Spirit, one for Outstanding Performance and one for Technique. He lost his ōzeki rank after more injury problems at the end of 2012, and having fallen greatly in rank after withdrawing from the May 2013 tournament, he announced his retirement in September of that year at the age of 28.

Julia Dorny, is a German athlete, media scientist, journalist and television presenter who has won various World and European Championships in three martial arts disciplines. She is the only female athlete in the world who has won championships in judo, mixed martial arts and sumo wrestling. She was the first German woman to become MMA European Champion and MMA World Champion in featherweight within the IMMAF amateurs. In her professional career she was an undefeated fighter until her first loss in March 2022. She fought for the German Mixed Martial Arts Championship (GMC) and was under contract with PFL. Sumo Didi is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language sports biographical film on the life of Hetal Dave, India's only professional female sumo wrestler. The film is the directorial debut of Jayant Rohatgi, and stars Shriyam Bhagnani in title role with Chaitnya Sharma, Anubha Fatehpura, Nitesh Pandey, and Raghav Dheer. The film has been showcased at multiple film festival including 2023 Tokyo International Film Festival, 2024 Palm Springs International Film Festival, and 24th New York Indian Film Festival.
