Hilowle Gaab is a village in the north of Runirgod District, Hirshabelle State, Somalia. It is located on a road that connects Hamar and Ceeldher. The town is close to the dunes of Geesocawlo and Buuraha Hiyilka.

History

The village had come under al-Shabaab control sometime before 2023. [1] In January 2023, the Somali government recaptured the village from al-Shabaab, leading the group to retaliate in an attack that killed six Somali soldiers and militiamen. [2] Both al-Shabaab and the Somali government claimed control of the village after the attack. [3] al-Shabaab recaptured Hilowle Gaab in August 2023. [4]

There was a halt in fighting during a government offensive in Mogadishu, which started on May 22.

Bulo Marer is a town in the southwestern Lower Shebelle region of Somalia. It was a base of Al-Shabaab, and was the site of an ill-fated 2013 military operation during which French commandos attempted to free a French hostage that was being held by the insurgent group. The town was taken by Somali government forces assisted by AMISOM troops after a battle on August 30, 2014. It was the site of the 2018 African Union base attack in Bulo Marer.

The Battle of Mogadishu (2010–11) began on 23 August 2010 when al-Shabaab insurgents began attacking government and African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) positions in the Somali capital of Mogadishu. Al-Shabaab began its offensive after its spokesman said the group was declaring a "massive war" on troops sent by AMISOM, describing its 6,000 peacekeepers as "invaders". In December 2010 the number of AMISOM troops was increased to 8,000 and later to 9,000. The battle's name usually includes the years, when referenced, in order to distinguish it amongst the nine major Battles of Mogadishu during the decades long Somali Civil War.

Af Urur is a village in the Puntland region of Somalia, located on the Golis Mountains, somewhat far from Bosaso, but its exact location is not known. The settlement is placed at a strategically important location, and has thus become strongly contested during the Somali Civil War. One of the most prominent clans in the village are the Tiinle.

On September 3, 2022, militants from al-Shabaab ambushed a civilian bus traveling from Beledweyne to Mahas, in Hiran, Somalia. Over twenty civilians were killed, and the bombing occurred in the middle of the 2022 Hiraan offensive by the Somali military against al-Shabaab.

On November 27, 2022, militants from Al-Shabaab stormed the Villa Rossa Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia, holing themselves up in the facility until Somali forces recaptured it.

The battle of Runirgod took place between December 12 and December 22, 2022, with Somali forces launching an offensive against al-Shabaab in the Runirgod District of Middle Shabelle, the group's last stronghold in the state.

On January 6, 2023, al-Shabaab militants attacked the town of Hilowle Gaab, which had recently been recaptured by Somali forces. Over 20 people were killed in the attack, including several Somali commanders.
