Hippolyte Annex (14 February 1933 - 21 February 2021) was a French former professional boxer. He was four times French champion, [1] holding the French welterweight title from 1960 when he beat Michel Lombardet [2] to 1961 and the middleweight title from 1961 to 1963. [3] In 1962, he unsuccessfully fought Laszlo Papp for the EBU European middleweight title. [4]

Professional career

Annex's first professional fight was against Ceslaw Dudek on 12 April 1959 in Paris, winning by a knock out. In 37 professional bouts, Annex won 28 (19 by knock outs), drew 6 and lost 3 (all KOs). [3]

A proposed bout in Paris with Sugar Ray Robinson was announced in 1962 but did not happen. [5]

Annex's last fight was on 16 June 1963 at the St. Nazaire Stadium, Saint-Nazaire, Loire-Atlantique, France, when he was knocked out by the Senegalese boxer Souleymane Diallo. [3]

In 2007, his home town of Pézenas honoured Annex by naming a street after him. [1] A gymnasium in the town's sports park has been named after him since 2016. [6]

Annex died on 21 February 2021 in Montpellier. [7]

José Ángel Nápoles was a Cuban-born Mexican professional boxer. He was a two-time undisputed welterweight champion, having held the WBA, WBC, and The Ring welterweight titles between 1969 and 1975. He is frequently ranked as one of the greatest fighters of all time in that division and is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. His record of the most wins in unified championship bouts in boxing history, shared with Muhammad Ali, was unbeaten for 40 years. After debuting professionally in Cuba, he fought out of Mexico and became a Mexican citizen.

During the 1960s, boxing, like mostly everything else around the world, went through changing times. Notable was the emergence of a young boxer named Cassius Clay, who would, in his own words shock the world, declare himself against war, and change his name to Muhammad Ali.

Anthony Florian Zaleski, known professionally as Tony Zale, was an American boxer. Zale was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, a steel town, which gave him his nickname, "Man of Steel", reinforced by his reputation of being able to take fearsome punishment and still rally to win. Zale, who held the world middleweight title multiple times, was known as a crafty boxer and punishing body puncher who wore his opponents down before knocking them out. In 1990, Zale was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal by President George. H. W. Bush.

Billy Papke was an American boxer who held the World Middleweight Championship from September 7 to November 26, 1908. In 1910-12, he also took the Australian and British versions of the World Middleweight Championship, though American boxing historians generally take less note of these titles. With a solid and efficient punch, 70 percent of his better publicized career wins by decision were from knockouts, and roughly 40% of his reported fights were as well. Papke was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001. Sportswriter Nat Fleischer, original owner of "Ring" Magazine, ranked Papke as the seventh best middleweight of all time. Announcer Charley Rose ranked him as the tenth greatest middleweight in boxing history. He was elected to the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1972.

Pézenas is a commune in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region in southern France.

Carlos Santos is a former boxer from Puerto Rico, who represented his native country as an amateur at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Santos was involved both in the first and the fourth world title bouts involving two Puerto Rican boxers in history. It has been suggested that Santos was not born in Ceiba but in the San Juan area named "Santurce", but it is widely believed that Santos is a Ceiba native.

Christian Kjeld Kristensen known as Christian "Gentleman Chris" Christensen,, was a Danish professional middleweight boxer. His heyday was in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when he won the European middleweight title. Professionally, he had a 20.25% knock-out rate, winning 56 of his 79 professional fights. He was born in Kundby, Holbæk, Zealand, Denmark.

Marie-Ève Dicaire is a Canadian professional boxer who is a 2-time IBF female light middleweight champion from 2018 to March 2021 and from December 2021 to November 2022. In 2013, she was named athlete of the year by Boxing Quebec. As of September 2020, she is ranked as the world's second best active female light middleweight by The Ring and BoxRec.
