Hisham Zaman (born 1 February 1975) is a Norwegian film director and screenwriter of Kurdish origin. [1] He graduated from the Norwegian Film School at Lillehammer in 2004. His films center on the stories and inner dilemmas of characters united by a common refugee experience, exploring human themes such as love, acceptance, sacrifice, revenge, loyalty and honour. He has co-written several of his scripts with the Norwegian crime novelist Kjell Ola Dahl. [2]
Zaman's breakthrough film, Bawke, won more than 40 national and international awards. [3] He is also a two-time winner of the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film, the only filmmaker to have been awarded this distinction two years in a row. [4]
Zaman was born in Kirkuk, Iraq in 1975. When he was 10 years old, he was forced to flee the country with his parents and siblings. [5] The family spent several years as refugees in Iran and Turkey, hiding from the authorities to evade arrest. [6] They were eventually granted political asylum in Norway, where Zaman arrived at the age of 17. [7]
Although he had an early interest in filmmaking, Zaman was told by his father that ‘cinema will not put food on the table.’ [8] However, his mother used to let him and his cousins go to the cinema without his father’s knowledge. [9] After arriving in Norway, Zaman ‘took his father’s advice and began working as a car mechanic for Toyota to support his family. In the evenings, however, he explored his passion for filmmaking by joining an amateur cinema club and using rented and borrowed equipment to begin making his own films. [10]
In 2001, Zaman was accepted to the Norwegian Film School at Lillehammer, from which he graduated in 2004. His diploma film, The Roof, played in a number of international film festivals. [11] The Bridge, a short film he shot with his classmates, was awarded The Norwegian Playwright’s Association’s Award for Best Screenplay at the Norwegian Short Film Festival in 2003. [12]
Zaman received widespread critical acclaim for his breakthrough short film, Bawke. The 15-minute film tells the story of a father, an undocumented Kurdish refugee making a dangerous journey across Europe, who is forced to choose between two evils for the sake of his young son. [13]
Bawke was screened at the Sundance Film Festival [14] and was nominated for the Prix UIP for Best European Short Film at the European Film Awards. [15] It received more than 40 other awards at festivals around the world, including the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in 2005. [16] It also received an Amanda Award, the Norwegian equivalent of the Oscars, for Best Short Film the same year. [17] In 2010, it was named the best short film of the last decade in a poll by Norwegian film magazine Rushprint. [18]
The film is dedicated "to all those leaving their native countries and their roots and language in search of a better life.” [19]
Zaman’s next film was Winterland, a mid-length comedy about a Kurdish man living in remote Northern Norway, who enters into an arranged marriage with a woman from his home country whom he has never met. [20] Winterland was selected as the opening film for the Tromsø International Film Festival in 2007 [21] and won an Amanda Award for Best Actor. [22]
Zaman’s debut feature film, Before Snowfall, is a road movie that tells the story of a young man who sets out on a quest to avenge his family’s honour after his sister runs away from an arranged marriage. [23] Before Snowfall was filmed over a period of two years, [24] and shot in four different countries. [25]
Before Snowfall has been called a “dazzling drama about the shifting definitions of family, love, and honor.” [26] The film opened the Tromsø International Film Festival in 2013 [27] and was the most award-winning Norwegian film that year. [28] It won the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film at the Gothenburg Film Festival for its “original and honest vision that goes beyond clichés.” [29] It also won the award for Best Cinematography in a Narrative Feature Film at the Tribeca Film Festival. [30] According to the comments given by the jury for the award, “Before Snowfall packs a visual punch to match the force and ambition of its story” and “invites us into many vivid worlds and fulfills many possibilities for cinematography as an art form.” [31]
Zaman’s second feature film, Letter to the King , features five characters on a day trip from their refugee shelter to the Norwegian capital city of Oslo, each with a unique agenda for the trip. Tying the five stories together is the voice of an 83-year-old man, desperate to return to Kurdistan, who decides to write a letter explaining his plight to the King of Norway. [32]
The script for Letter to the King was co-written with Mehmet Aktas, a Kurdish producer and writer from Turkey. [33] They wrote the script in three weeks, drawing on the stories of refugees they knew personally. [34] The film was shot in 35 days without any financial backing. [35] It has been called a “beautifully structured, highly emotional and deeply memorable ensemble piece” [36] and one that “finds narrative diversity in the tragi-comic variety of immigrant experience.” [37]
Letter to the King once again won the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film at the Gothenburg Film Festival in 2014. The award was given by the jury for “a film that is compassionate and honest in its presentation of human existence.” [38]
The film also received the FIPRESCI award at the European Cinema Festival of Lecce, [39] and was one of three films shortlisted for a nomination to the Oscar Awards by the Norwegian Oscar Committee. [40]
Hisham Zaman presented his third feature film, A Happy Day, at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. The movie centers on three teenagers who live in a refugee centre in a remote region of Norway and face deportation as they are reaching their eighteenth birthday. [41] [42] [43]
While refugees are the central characters in all his films, Zaman stresses that ‘I make films about human beings, not about politics.’ [44] Through his emphasis on human stories, he seeks to portray refugees and migrants as complex and diverse individuals, rather than a monolithic entity. In his words, “[t]his is what makes us human, because we are so different. But at the same time, we are judged by the politicians, media, society as one group.” [45]
Zaman’s films are all fictional, but they are inspired by real-life events, stories, and personalities. Some of his own experiences as a child refugee influenced the sequence of events in Bawke. [46] He has said that “it was important for me to empty myself of the stories that have bothered me for many years.” [47] When making Before Snowfall, Zaman met with human smugglers and used the details they provided to guide his story development. [48] He regularly returns to Kurdistan and visits refugee camps in Oslo to collect stories. [49] As a result, his films play with the boundaries between documentary and fiction. [50]
Zaman is also notable for his use of non-professional actors to play the majority of the leading roles in his films. His team has recruited refugees from public places such as cafes and community centres to act in his films. [51] As he says, “[f]or me, casting is an important part of the filmmaking process, maybe 50% of the whole film. If you have the right cast, half of the job is done.” [52] He also borrows from amateur actors’ expressions and clothing to lend authenticity to his work. [53] While his scripts are written in Norwegian, the dialogues in his films are often in Kurdish or other languages spoken by refugees. [54]
Despite the harshness of the refugee experiences that influence him, comedy is a feature of all of Zaman’s work. [55] In his words, “lightness and humour are also present in my films: they are often born from the absurdity of the situations.” [56]
Zaman’s work marks a significant departure from mainstream diaspora Kurdish cinema, which has tended to rely heavily on tropes of suffering and political betrayal. [57] His films have also been recognized for the substantial contribution they have made to Norwegian national cinema by exploring the experiences and challenges of migrant communities in the context of an evolving society. [58]
Zaman founded the production company Snowfall Cinema in 2015. [59] He was an associate professor at the Norwegian Film School, [60] where he has also served as Head of the Department of Film Direction. [61] He speaks six languages: Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Norwegian and English. [62]

Kurdish cinema focuses on the Kurdish people and culture. The fate of the Kurds as a people without a state shaped their cinema. Kurdish films often show social grievances, oppression, torture, human rights violations, and life as a stranger. Kurdish cinema has a high significance for the Kurds, as it offers the opportunity to draw attention to their own situation artistically. However, because of state repression, most films are produced in exile. The best example of this is in Turkey, where Kurds were not permitted to speak their native language until 1991, which made the development of their films more difficult.
Arab cinema or Arabic cinema refers to the film industry of the Arab world. Most productions are from the Egyptian cinema. Currently, the Middle East's largest cinema chain is Vox, owned by UAE-based Majid Al Futtaim Cinemas.

The Sons of Eilaboun is a 2007 documentary film by Palestinian artist and film maker Hisham Zreiq (Zrake), that tells the story of the Eilabun massacre, which was committed by the Israeli army during Operation Hiram in October 1948. Eilaboun is a village in the Northern Galilee between Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee. In the incident, fourteen men were killed and twelve of them were executed. The villagers were expelled to Lebanon and became refugees for few months, before being allowed to return in 1949.
I Saw the Sun is a 2009 Turkish drama film, written and directed by Mahsun Kırmızıgül, which tells of a Kurdish family who are forced from their village in southeastern Turkey by the conflict there. The film, which was released on 13 March 2009, was one of the highest grossing Turkish films of 2009, prompting its re-release on 18 September 2009. The film was Turkey's official submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards, but it was not nominated.

Min Dît: The Children of Diyarbakır, alternatively titled Before Your Eyes, is a 2009 Kurdish-language drama film directed by German-based Kurdish filmmaker Miraz Bezar, based on a story that he co-wrote with journalist and short-story writer Evrim Alataş, about street children in the eastern Turkish city of Diyarbakır. The film, which went on nationwide general release across Turkey on April 2, 2010, was the first Turkish film produced in Kurdish and won awards at film festivals in San Sebastian, where it premiered, Antalya and Istanbul.

A growing number of film festivals are held in the Arab world to showcase films from the region as well as international standouts. In addition, institutions and organizations in other parts of the world are increasingly honoring the new generation of filmmakers in the Arab world with Arab film festivals.

Bülent Öztürk is a Belgian-Kurdisch screenwriter and director based in Antwerp, Belgium. His films have been nominated for and celebrated with several (international) awards. His films stand out because of their minimalist and documentary style with spare use of dialogue and the recurrence of socially and culturally concerned themes. His short film Houses with Small Windows (2013) was awarded the title of best European short film at the Venice Film Festival, and was nominated for the 26th European Film Awards in Berlin. In his home country the film received an ‘Ensor’ for best short film at the Ostend Film Festival. Apart from writing and directing two documentaries and three short films, Öztürk presented his first feature film Blue Silence in 2017, with the support of The Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF).
Mehmet Aktaş is a Kurdish filmmaker, producer, author, and journalist. He is born in Turkey but lives in Germany. He is the founder and chief executive of the film production and distribution company, Mîtosfilm, in Berlin.
Bina Majid Mustafa, known as Bina Qeredaxi, was born in 1988 in Duhok, Kurdistan Region of Iraq. She is a filmmaker and media specialist with over nine years of experience in filmmaking, Television industry and cultural management. Bina has earned her BA in Law and Politics in 2010 at University of Duhok but started her film and media career in 2007 with writing and directing a popular social awareness-raising show named for Kurdistan TV channel, followed by several other TV shows in lead Kurdish channels. In the past years, she worked in different positions in award-winning films such as "Bekas" by Karzan Kadir. She is the co-founder and program manager of Duhok International Film Festival.
Cinema of Sudan refers to both the history and present of the making or screening of films in cinemas or film festivals, as well as to the persons involved in this form of audiovisual culture of the Sudan and its history from the late nineteenth century onwards. It began with cinematography during the British colonial presence in 1897 and developed along with advances in film technology during the twentieth century.
