The death of Kim Jong Il was reported by North Korean state television news on 19 December 2011. The presenter Ri Chun-hee announced that he had died on 17 December at 8:30 am of a massive heart attack while travelling by train to an area outside Pyongyang. Reportedly, he had received medical treatment for cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases, and during the trip, Kim was said to have had an "advanced acute myocardial infarction, complicated with a serious heart shock". However, it was reported in December 2012 by South Korean media that the heart attack had instead occurred in a fit of rage over construction faults in a crucial power plant project at Huichon in Chagang Province.

Ri Chol-guk is a North Korean table tennis player. As of May 2012, Ri is ranked no. 86 in the world by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Ri is a member of the table tennis team for Kigwancha Sports Club, and is coached and trained by Kim Jin Myong. He is also right-handed, and uses the penhold grip.
The Men's Flyweight Weightlifting Event is the lightest men's event at the weightlifting competition, limiting competitors to a maximum of 52 kilograms of body mass. Each weightlifter had three attempts for both the snatch and clean and jerk lifting methods. The total of the best successful lift of each method was used to determine the final rankings and medal winners. Competition took place on 20 July in the Izmailovo Sports Palace.
Jon Chol-ho is a North Korean former weightlifter, who competed in the middleweight class and represented North Korea at international competitions. He won the bronze medal at the 1989 World Weightlifting Championships in the 75 kg category. He won the bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in the 76 kg event. He also participated at the 1992 Summer Olympics in the 82.5 kg event and 2000 Summer Olympics in the 77 kg event. He won the gold medal at the 1990 Asian Games in the Lightweight class.

Parliamentary elections were held in North Korea on 10 March 2019 to elect the members of the 14th Supreme People's Assembly. The elections were announced on 6 January 2019. Kim Jong Un did not stand for election, marking the first time that a North Korean leader did not participate as a candidate.
Kim Bong-chol is a North Korean sports shooter. He competed in the men's 25 metre rapid fire pistol event at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
