Hoggboy were an English indie rock band, formed in 2001 in Sheffield, England. The band was composed of frontman Tom Hogg, guitarist Hugh Smith, bassist Andrew Bailey and drummer Richy Westley. They released two studio albums before splitting up in 2005. Hogg and Bailey went on to form The Hosts.

History

Formed in 2001 by Sheffield music stalwart, former Seafruit [1] and Chicken Legs Weaver [1] guitarist Tom Hogg, the band set up their own record company "Sobriety Records" and released two albums, the Richard Hawley and Chris Thomas produced debut Or 8? and "Seven Miles Of Love", both of which spawned five singles.

The band received early plaudits from the likes of the NME [2] who described the band as "gloriously cocky and casually brilliant, Hoggboy will steal your heart", Kerrang!, Channel 4 [3] and BBC Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq who commented ""I was sent 1 track by this group, then I went to see them live last Saturday and my jaw just hit the floor to be honest. To me, it's like some really old school Sheffield sleaze & arrogance mixed together with an air of American rock'n'roll", [4] [5] and supported bands including The Strokes and The White Stripes [6] before the band found themselves "the official scapegoat of the inevitable garage-rock backlash in England", with one Japan Times journalist suggesting the band were perhaps an easy scapegoat as Hogg came across in interviews as "an insufferable piss-taker who couldn't give a damn whether the British music press likes him or not". The band split up in 2005 after three years together, with Tom Hogg and bassist Andrew 'Fingers' Bailey going on to form The Hosts in 2007. [8] The Hosts have supported and continued to work with Richard Hawley, who expected the band do great things and described Hoggboy as a "great lost Sheffield band" who he really believed in. [9] Drummer Richy Westley joined Reverend and The Makers before leaving to form Strange And Partner in 2009, who also featured guitarist Hugh Smith until he re-located to Edinburgh. [10]

Richard Willis Hawley is an English singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer. After his first band Treebound Story broke up, Hawley found success as a member of Britpop band Longpigs in the 1990s. After that group broke up in 2000, he joined the band Pulp, led by his friend Jarvis Cocker, for a short time. As a solo musician, Hawley has released eight studio albums. He has been nominated for a Mercury prize twice and once for a Brit Award. He has collaborated with Lisa Marie Presley, Shakespears Sister, Arctic Monkeys, Manic Street Preachers, Elbow, Duane Eddy and Paul Weller.

Longpigs were an English indie rock band who rose to fame on the fringe of Britpop in the 1990s, comprising Crispin Hunt (vocals), Richard Hawley (guitar), Simon Stafford and former Cabaret Voltaire member Dee Boyle (drums) who was replaced by Andy Cook for their second album. Hailing from Sheffield, the group had success with singles such as "She Said", "On and On", and their well-received debut album The Sun Is Often Out (1996).

Lady's Bridge is the fifth studio album from musician Richard Hawley, released on 20 August 2007 in the UK and on 9 October 2007 in the US. The album follows his 2005 Mercury Music Prize-nominated album Coles Corner. It is named after the landmark location of Lady's Bridge in Hawley's hometown of Sheffield, an old bridge over the River Don that historically connected the rich and poor parts of the town. Hawley told Uncut magazine that "the title is a metaphor too; it's about leaving the past behind". The cover features a photograph, taken by Martin Parr, of Hawley and his guitar at the Club 60 music venue in Sheffield as a tribute to his father Dave who had died of lung cancer earlier that year: Dave Hawley had been a blues guitarist at the club in his youth, playing alongside Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

<i>Suck It and See</i> 2011 studio album by Arctic Monkeys

Suck It and See is the fourth studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, released on 6 June 2011 by Domino Recording Company. The album's songs were written by frontman Alex Turner in 2010 on an acoustic guitar in his, at the time, Brooklyn home. It was produced in Los Angeles at Sound City Studios by the band's longtime collaborator James Ford in early 2011, using mostly live takes opposed to overdubbing. The album's title, a British phrase meaning "give it a try", was viewed as provocative in the United States due to being misinterpreted as referencing fellatio, and was subsequently censored in some locations. The artwork features the album title in black over a cream colored background.

<i>Submarine</i> (EP) 2011 EP / soundtrack by Alex Turner

Submarine is the debut solo EP by English musician and Arctic Monkeys lead vocalist Alex Turner, released on 14 March 2011 by Domino Recording Company. It was written by Turner in 2009, on an acoustic guitar, at his New York City home. It was produced in London by frequent collaborator James Ford, alongside guest musician Bill Ryder-Jones, and string arranger Owen Pallett. The EP consists of six original songs that act as the soundtrack of Richard Ayoade's debut feature film, Submarine (2010), based on the novel by Joe Dunthorne. The artwork is a resized version of the film's poster, which depicts lead actor Craig Roberts.

Reverend and the Makers are an English rock band from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The band is fronted by Jon McClure, nicknamed "The Reverend". Their debut album, The State of Things (2007), helped them gain success in Britain and spawned the UK top 10 single "Heavyweight Champion of the World". The band released their second album, A French Kiss in the Chaos (2009), which led to them being invited to support Oasis on their final tour, playing venues such as Wembley Stadium. The band's third studio album, @Reverend_Makers, was released in 2012, their fourth studio album, ThirtyTwo, was released in 2014 which had more electronic and dance music influences. These were followed by Mirrors in 2015 and The Death of a King in 2017 which showcased a hard rock and folk influenced sound. David Hawley, better known as Dave Hawley, was a prominent guitarist who was part of the late 1950s and 1960s Sheffield rock music scene. On his death, he was described as being "a leading light" and "an outstanding guitarist"; the Sheffield Star called him a "Sheffield music legend". Thom Jurek described him as "a lifelong Teddy Boy from the first generation of the Edwardian youth subculture in the '50, was a gone rockabilly cat who worshipped Gene Vincent and played music his entire life."

Sophie and the Giants, also abbreviated as SATG, is an English music artist founded in Sheffield in 2015.
