The Hollywood Women's Press Club was created in 1928 by Louella Parsons. The club was originally a luncheon club for women magazine and newspaper journalists, but in 1941 admitted publicists and subsequently screenwriters and other allied professions. The club admitted men from the late 1970s.
The club itself is well known mostly for its Golden Apple Awards, including the award for Sour Apple. The last awards were granted in 2001, and the Club is no longer active.

The Golden Apple Award was an American award presented to entertainers by the Hollywood Women's Press Club, usually in recognition not of performance, but of behavior. The award was presented from 1941 until 2001, when the Hollywood Women's Press Club became inactive. The awards ceremony included Golden Apples to recognize actors for being easy to work with, as well as the Sour Apple Award chastising actors for being rude or difficult. Winners of the former include Bob Hope (1941), Mae West (1969) and Billy Crystal (1989) and winners of the latter include Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley (1966) Joan Rivers (1983), and Dale Robertson.

Truth Be Told is an American drama streaming television series based on the novel Are You Sleeping by Kathleen Barber and produced for Apple TV+. The series was created by Nichelle Tramble Spellman, who is also set to executive produce and write for the show. The series premiered on December 6, 2019. The soundtrack, composed by John Paesano, was released by Lakeshore Records on the same day. New York's Paley Center also aired episodes of the show. A featurette from the series was released on November 26, 2019. On March 5, 2020, Apple renewed the series for a second season.

Hustlers is a 2019 American crime drama film written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, based on New York magazine's 2015 article "The Hustlers at Scores" by Jessica Pressler. The film stars Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Lizzo, and Cardi B. The plot follows a crew of strippers in New York City who begin to steal money by drugging stock traders and CEOs who visit their club, then running up their credit cards. Lopez is also a producer on the film through Nuyorican Productions, alongside Jessica Elbaum, Will Ferrell, and Adam McKay through their Gloria Sanchez banner.

The ceremony aired live on NBC in the United States. Ricky Gervais hosted the ceremony for the fifth and "final" time.
