Hollywoodgate is a 2023 German-American documentary film written and directed by Ibrahim Nash'at. It premiered out of competition at the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival. It is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 19, 2024.

Production

The film was shot in over a year, [1] and it chronicles the daily life in Afghanistan of Taliban air force commander Mawlawi Mansour, and one of his soldiers, the fundamentalist M.J. Mukhtar, following the American withdrawal from Afghanistan. [2]

Release

The film premiered out of competition at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. [3] [4] [5] [6] It was later screened at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, [7] the 2023 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, [8] the 2024 Jeonju International Film Festival, [9] the 2024 Seattle International Film Festival, [10] the 2024 Sheffield International Documentary Festival, [11] the 2024 Filmfest München [12] and is set to premiere in the 2024 New Zealand International Film Festival. [13]

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 19, 2024. [14] It is set to be released in the regions of Middle East and North Africa (MENA) from August 30, 2024 where the Dubai based distributer Front Row Filmed Entertainment has acquired distribution rights. [15]

Reception

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 83% approval rating based on 12 reviews. [16]

Awards and Accolades

The film was named as the winners of "The Golden Eye" from the 2023 Zurich Film Festival, [17] the "Full Frame Grand Jury Award" from the 2024 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, [18] the "AFF Feature Documentary Award" from the 2023 Adelaide Film Festival [19] "The Fipresci Prize" from the 2023 El Gouna Film Festival, and also received the top honors of El Gouna Gold Star for Documentry Film. It follows the efforts of the Sudanese Film Group, represented by retired filmmakers Ibrahim Shadad, Manar Al Hilo, Suleiman Mohamed Ibrahim and Altayeb Mahdi, to reopen an outdoor movie theater in the city of Omdurman in the face of decades of Islamist censorship and inefficient bureaucracy. According to film critic Jay Weissberg, the title of the film "comes from Bertolt Brecht’s 1940 poem To Those Born Later, in which he laments the suppression of discussion under dictatorship, and how shifting the discourse to mundane topics painfully draws attention to what can’t be spoken aloud."

Ali El Arabi is an Egyptian producer and director, who was born in Dakahlia, Egypt. He grew up practicing kickboxing and won Egypt's national kickboxing championship. He became passionate about filmmaking when he moved to Cairo. In 2009, he made his first foray into the filmmaking world when he met some staff members at ZDF channel who discovered his talent. It was released in select theaters in the United States starting November 11, 2022, by National Geographic Documentary Films and Picturehouse and was later made available on various streaming platforms. The film received critical acclaim, was nominated for the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing in the Documentary Category at the Producers Guild of America Awards, and won the Doc NYC award at the annual documentary film festival. The film also faced criticism for failing to adequately protect the identities of its subjects.

Unlike Disney, Boris not only garnered nominations but also won the Oscar in 2023 for Navalny. This dual accomplishment of two nominations and a win set a new record in film history.
