Homework is a live album by drummer Sunny Murray, bassist Bob Dickie, and guitarist Robert Andreano. It was recorded in May 1994 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was released in 1997 by Super Secret Sound. The album was remastered and reissued in 2019 by NoBusiness Records. [1] [2]

In a review for DownBeat , Herb Boyd stated that, in comparison with his work with Cecil Taylor and Albert Ayler, "on Homework... Murray is no less relentless, and the signature musicality he derived from his drums is readily apparent on the occasions when they blend with Bob Dickie's bass clarinet. Years ago, musicologist and writer Valerie Wilmer commented that Murray possessed the ability to lead whoever performed with him. It's true on this date and guitarist Robert Andreano is a most attentive compatriot, one who has done his homework." [3]
Pierre Crépon and Marc Chaloin, writing for The New York City Jazz Record , commented: "The session sounds completely improvised, of the 'let's go in and see what happens' variety. And what happens is quite surprising: Murray's main register here is not the free pulse he is known for, but grooves that tread binary grounds... 'Why You Need a Lawyer When Your Pants on Fire' is... a remarkable opportunity to listen to elements of the drummer's classic style, as he goes into a fascinating interiorized dancing, anchored by his left foot hi-hat work... Homework documents a brief moment in his musical life, whose richness made it possible for it to be unique." [5]
In an article for All About Jazz , John Sharpe stated: "Murray tailors his playing to the situation, fitting in with his confreres, though also displaying enough of the unruly embellishments and dashes of brilliance which made his name. He maintains momentum throughout, often but not always without recourse to regular meter... In spite of Murray's legendary status, both Andreano and Dickie avoid being overwhelmed. In fact, during the finest episodes, they more than hold their own in bracing three-way conversations... This is a welcome opportunity to hear Murray in relaxed form during a less well-documented phase of his career." [4]
Edwin Pouncey of JazzWise remarked that the recording finds Murray in "fine form as he effortlessly jams along with Dickie's weaving bass patterns and Andreano's bouts of Hendrix-meets-Sharrock styled fluid guitar-playing... the intimate vibe that permeates the set is both endearing and, after several replays, teetering on the edge of becoming enduring." Jazz Weekly's George W. Harris commented: "Murray is loose as a goose as Andreano abstractly rocks out on 'Homework' while he lays down a mellow groove on a bluesy 'Swell.' The team trudges through a tribal 'Memorial Day' with some palpable guitar pickings, and the team slashes through the acid rock of 'In.' Jazzy head bangers." [7]

James Marcellus Arthur "Sunny" Murray was an American musician, and was one of the pioneers of the free jazz style of drumming.
The swing era was the period (1933–1947) when big band swing music was the most popular music in the United States. Though this was its most popular period, the music had actually been around since the late 1920s and early 1930s, being played by black bands led by such artists as Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford, Bennie Moten, Cab Calloway, Earl Hines, and Fletcher Henderson, and white bands from the 1920s led by the likes of Jean Goldkette, Russ Morgan and Isham Jones. An early milestone in the era was from "the King of Swing" Benny Goodman's performance at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles on August 21, 1935, bringing the music to the rest of the country. The 1930s also became the era of other great soloists: the tenor saxophonists Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Lester Young; the alto saxophonists Benny Carter and Johnny Hodges; the drummers Chick Webb, Gene Krupa, Jo Jones and Sid Catlett; the pianists Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson; the trumpeters Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, Bunny Berigan, and Rex Stewart.
Bing with a Beat was Bing Crosby's seventh long play album but his first with RCA Victor. It was recorded at the Radio Recorders "Annex" Studio in Los Angeles and released on vinyl in September 1957. Bing with a Beat is a 1957 concept album where the songs feature "hot" jazz and dixieland arrangements by Matty Matlock, played by Bob Scobey's Frisco Jazz Band.

The albums include performances by groups led by musicians such as Hamiet Bluiett, Anthony Braxton, Marion Brown, Dave Burrell, Andrew Cyrille, Oliver Lake, Jimmy Lyons, Ken McIntyre, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Roscoe Mitchell, David Murray, Sunny Murray, Sam Rivers, Leo Smith, Henry Threadgill, and Randy Weston. The recordings were originally released in 1977 on the Douglas and Casablanca labels as five separate LPs, and were reissued in 1999 by Knit Classics as a 3-CD set.
Stockholm, Berlin 1966 is a live album by saxophonist and composer Albert Ayler, recorded in Europe in 1966 and released on the Swiss hatOLOGY label in 2011. The Berlin tracks were previously released on The Berlin Concerts - 1966, Albert Ayler Live In Europe 1964 - 1966, and the compilation Holy Ghost: Rare & Unissued Recordings (1962–70) (Revenant). All of the tracks were reissued on a 2021 Hat Hut release titled Albert Ayler Quintet 1966: Berlin, Lörrach, Paris & Stockholm. Revisited.
Corona is a live album by Cecil Taylor recorded during the "Total Music Meeting" at the "Podewil", the headquarters of the Kulturprojekte Berlin non-profit organisation, on November 1, 1996, one day before the recording of the Taylor album Almeda, and two days before the recording of The Light of Corona. It was released in 2018 in digital format by the FMP label as part of their Archive Edition, and was reissued in 2021 in CD format by Corbett vs. Dempsey.

Perles Noires, Volumes 1 and 2, is a pair of live albums by the drummer Sunny Murray. The albums were recorded during 2002–2004 at various locations, and were released by Eremite Records in 2005. On Volume 1, Murray is joined by the saxophonists Sabir Mateen and Louis Belogenis, the pianist Dave Burrell and the double bassist Alan Silva. On Volume 2, he is heard with Mateen, the saxophonist and bass clarinetist Oluyemi Thomas and the pianist John Blum.
Cherry Jam is a four-track extended play by trumpeter Don Cherry. It was recorded in October 1965 in Copenhagen for radio broadcast by Danmarks Radio, and was released by Gearbox Records as part of Record Store Day 2020. On the album, Cherry is joined by four local musicians: saxophonist Mogens Bollerup, pianist Atli Bjørn, bassist Benny Nielsen, and drummer Simon Koppel. Cherry Jam helps to document the gap between Togetherness, recorded in the spring and summer of 1965 and released in 1966, and Complete Communion, recorded in December 1965 and released in 1966, and shows him in the midst of a transition from a sideman in the free jazz scene to a leader of his own bands.
Monks is an album by pianist Borah Bergman, bassist Wilber Morris, and drummer Sunny Murray. Featuring interpretations of music by Thelonious Monk, it was recorded on April 30, 1996, in New York City, and was issued in 2019 as a two-CD set by the Some Real Music label. Plans for the album's release were initially abandoned due to errors made by the original recording engineers, resulting in unusable DAT master tapes; however, in late 2018, producer Joe Chonto located alternate versions of the tapes, which were then used by engineer Jeff Willens to reassemble and remaster the final version.
