The Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities (HKAH) is a cross-institutional body of scholars in the humanities based in Hong Kong. The Academy was established in April 2011 with 39 foundation fellows drawn from Hong Kong's eight institutions of higher education funded by the University Grants Committee. [1] Its constitution was promulgated at the 2012 AGM. [1]
In 2015,the First Book Prize was won by Catherine Ladds of Hong Kong Baptist University for her book Empire Careers:Working for the Chinese Customs Service 1854–1949, published in 2014 by Manchester University Press. [3] [4] The runner up was Dennis Tay of Hong Kong Polytechnic University for his book Metaphor in Psychotherapy:A Descriptive and Prescriptive Analysis published in 2013 by John Benjamins.

Fellows in the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities are recognized by their peers as scholars of the highest academic distinction,or eminent practitioners of the arts,and honored for their lifetime contribution to the humanities. Early Career Fellows (previously referred to as Junior Fellows) are early to mid-career scholars who show exceptional promise in their humanities discipline. Overseas Fellows are Fellows who were formerly based in Hong Kong and have taken up posts abroad.
New Fellows are nominated on an annual basis by nomination and secret ballot of members. [5]
Founding Secretary,Professor David Parker (1943–2015) of Chinese University of Hong Kong's Research Centre for Human Values,died on 29 October 2015 and served as Vice-President of the HKAH at the time.
The Academy has sister relationships with other national academy bodies around the world,including the Union Académique Internationale and the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
Sir Charles Kao Kuen was an electrical engineer and physicist who pioneered the development and use of fiber optics in telecommunications. In the 1960s,Kao created various methods to combine glass fibers with lasers in order to transmit digital data,which laid the groundwork for the evolution of the Internet.
The British Academy for the Promotion of Historical,Philosophical and Philological Studies is the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities and the social sciences. The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) is a provider of tertiary education in Hong Kong. Located near the north coast of Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island,the main campus also functions as a venue for performances. Jao Tsung-I or Rao Zongyi was a Hong Kong sinologist,calligrapher,historian and painter. A versatile and prolific scholar,he contributed to many fields of humanities,including history,archaeology,epigraphy,folklores,religion,art history,musicology,literature,and Near Eastern Studies. He published more than 100 books and about 1,000 academic articles over a career spanning more than 80 years.
Gregory B. Lee is an academic,author,and broadcaster. Lee is Founding Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of St Andrews. He was until July 2020,Director of the French research Institute for Transtextual and Transcultural Studies based at Jean Moulin University Lyon 3. Lee was previously Chair Professor of Chinese and Transcultural Studies and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong. From 2007 to 2010 Lee was First Vice-President (Research) of Jean Moulin University Lyon 3. In 2010,Lee was made a Chevalier (Knight) in the French Order of Academic Palms. In 2011,he was elected Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities.

Robert James Mair,Baron Mair,is a geotechnical engineer and Emeritus Sir Kirby Laing Professor of Civil Engineering and director of research at the University of Cambridge. He is Head of the Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC). He was Master of Jesus College,Cambridge,from 2001 to 2011 and a fellow of St John's College,Cambridge,from 1998 to 2001. In 2014 he was elected a vice president of the Institution of Civil Engineers and on 1 November 2017 became the Institution's president for 2017–18,its 200th anniversary year. He was appointed an independent crossbencher in the House of Lords in 2015 and is currently a member of its Select Committee on Science and Technology.

Lauren Frederick Pfister is a Christian theologian and scholar of Confucianism. He is Professor Emeritus at Hong Kong Baptist University and is a founding fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities. He was awarded the honor of "Distinguished Scholar" at the Tenth International Symposium on the History of Christianity in Modern China.
