Hope Trautwein (born August 26, 1999) is a former American college softball pitcher and current assistant coach for the Houston Cougars. She previously played softball for North Texas, where she pitched the first perfect game in NCAA Division I history in which every out was a strikeout. [1]

High school career

Trautwein attended Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, Texas. As a senior, she led Hendrickson to a 27–3 record and a trip to the regional quarterfinals of the 2017 6A State Championship. She was subsequently named District 13-6A Pitcher of the Year in 2017. [2] [3]

College career

Trautwein began her collegiate career at North Texas in 2018. She made her collegiate debut on February 9, 2018, where she recorded five strikeouts in 4+23 innings allowing two runs in the win. [4] During her freshman year she appeared in 41 games, including 29 starts, and posted a 15–12 record, with a 2.48 ERA and 168 strikeouts in 183+23 innings. She ranked third in Conference USA in strikeouts and batters struck out looking and fourth in the conference in wins and innings pitched. On April 7, 2018, she pitched her first career no-hitter, and the first in program history since Ashley Kirk on April 29, 2013. [5] Following the season she was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team and Conference USA All-Freshman Team. [6]

During her sophomore year in 2019, she appeared in 44 games, including 28 starts, and posted a 22–7 record, with a 2.82 ERA and 169 strikeouts in a career-high 204+13 innings. She led the team in wins, ERA, strikeouts, and held opponents to a team-best .187 batting average while pitching a career-high 17 complete games. [2] On April 3, 2019, she pitched her second career no-hitter in a game against Sam Houston State. [7] Following the season she was named to the All-Conference USA First Team. [8]

During her junior year in 2020, she appeared in 15 games, including 11 starts, and posted an 11–1 record, with a 1.64 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 81 innings, in a season that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On February 21, 2020, she set the single game program and Conference USA records with 21 strikeouts in a game against Texas A&M–Corpus Christi. She became just the third pitcher in Division I history to strike out 21 hitters in a seven-inning game. [9] She was subsequently named the Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending February 24, 2020. [10]

During her senior year in 2021, she appeared in a team-high 30 games, including 21 starts, and posted an 13–4 record, with a 1.46 ERA and 235 strikeouts in 129+23 innings. She set the single-season program records for ERA (1.46), strikeouts (235), opponent batting average (.172), strikeouts per seven innings (12.73) and saves (7). During conference play, she posted a 7-0 record with a 1.04 ERA and 110 strikeouts. [2]

On April 11, 2021, in a game against Arkansas–Pine Bluff, she made NCAA Division I history when she pitched the first perfect game in which she registered all 21 outs by strikeout. This was the first perfect game in North Texas program history, and the second in Conference USA history. [11] She struck out 17 batters swinging, including the first 10 batters she faced, and four looking. [12] [13] Following an outstanding season she was named to the All-Conference USA First Team and Conference USA Pitcher of the Year. [14]

On June 18, 2021, Trautwein announced she would transfer to Oklahoma. [15] She finished her career at North Texas as the program leader in ERA (2.05), wins (61), saves (15), opponent batting average (.197) and strikeouts per seven innings (8.11). She also ranks second in strikeouts (693), fourth in complete games (40), and fifth in starts (68) and innings pitched (469.0). [2]

Trautwein made her debut for Oklahoma on February 10, 2022, in a game against UC Santa Barbara. She struck out three batters she faced in two innings. Sophomore Nicole May and freshman Jordy Bahl combined to finish the perfect game for the Sooners. [16] On May 27, 2022, she pitched her fourth career no-hitter in an 8–0 run-rule victory over UCF. [17] During her redshirt senior in 2022 she posted a 16–0 record, with 135 strikeouts in 88 innings pitched, and led the nation with a 0.16 ERA during the regular season. [18] Following an outstanding season she was named a first-team All-Big 12 selection. [19]

Coaching career

Following the conclusion of her collegiate career, Trautwein announced she would stay at Oklahoma as a graduate assistant coach in 2023. [20] [21]

On July 3, 2023, Trautwein was named an assistant coach for the Houston Cougars softball program. [22]

She currently holds the Arizona Wildcats records for career strikeouts, shutouts and innings pitched, in addition to the Pac-12 Conference wins and strikeout ratio records. Hollowell won the 2006 Women's College World Series.

Courtney Lynn Blades-Rogers is an American, former collegiate All-American, right-handed batting softball pitcher. She was a starting pitcher for two NCAA Division I teams: the Nicholls State Colonels and later the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. For her career she collected 151 wins and 1,773 strikeouts. She was awarded the Honda Sports Award Softball Player of the Year in 2000 and was recently named the #7 Greatest NCAA Pitcher of All-Time.

Angela Tincher O'Brien is an American, former collegiate All-American, retired professional All-Star softball pitcher and coach. She most recently served as the pitching coach at Virginia Tech. She was a 2008 first-round draft selection for the NPF Akron Racers. She is a graduate of James River High School and a 2008 graduate of Virginia Tech. In 2013, she was hired as Virginia Tech's softball pitching coach where she owns numerous school records. She is the ACC career leader in wins, strikeouts, shutouts, innings pitched, strikeout ratio and no-hitters, while also ranking in several records for the NCAA Division I, where she is one of five pitchers to achieve 100 wins, 1,000 strikeouts, an ERA under 1.00 and average double-digit strikeouts for her career.

Taryne Lee Mowatt is an American, former collegiate All-American, right-handed hitting, retired pro softball pitcher. Mowatt is the current pitching coach for Mississippi State. She played college softball at Arizona and helped them win the 2006 and 2007 Women's College World Series. From 2008 to 2013, Mowatt played professionally in National Pro Fastpitch, selected in the 2008 NPF draft by the Washington Glory. She ranks in several pitching categories for the Wildcats and holds the Women's College World Series records for strikeouts and wins.

Michele Marie Granger is an American, former collegiate four-time NCAA Division I First Team All-American and 1996 gold medal-winning Olympian softball pitcher. She played college softball for four seasons, over five years, for California. She won a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics with Team USA. She currently holds numerous pitching records for the Bears, and is the Pac-12 Conference career leader in perfect games, no hitters, shutouts and innings pitched, simultaneously holding the NCAA lead in no-hitters (25), along with several other top-10 career records. She is a USA Softball Hall of Fame inductee.

Danielle Elaine Lawrie is a Canadian, former collegiate All-American, medal-winning Olympian, professional All-Star softball pitcher and current sports commentator. Lawrie played college softball at Washington, in which she was part of the 2009 Women's College World Series championship team and was named Most Outstanding Player. Lawrie currently plays for the Canada women's national softball team, including during the 2008 Summer Olympics, and the 2020 Summer Olympics, where she won a bronze medal.

Katherine Burkhart is an American, former collegiate All-American, retired professional All-Star softball pitcher and softball coach. She played college softball at Arizona State, and won a national championship with the team in 2008 and was named Most Outstanding Player. Burkhart holds the career records in wins, strikeouts, perfect games, WHIP, innings pitched and strikeout ratio for the school. She also ranks in several career pitching categories and the top-10 for strikeouts and perfect games for both the Pac-12 Conference and the NCAA Division I. She has also pitched for the USA Softball team. She also helped remove snakes from a plane that was bound from Hawaii to Phoenix in 2023.

Jordan Lee Taylor is an American, former collegiate All-American, 3-time professional All-Star right-handed softball pitcher originally from Santa Clarita, California. She played for the Michigan Wolverines softball team from 2008–2011 and Team USA. She was drafted #11 and played from 2011-18 in the National Pro Fastpitch where she is currently the career leader in saves. She is the career Big Ten Conference career leader in strikeouts and also ranks in numerous records for the Wolverines, the conference and in the NCAA Division I.

Sarah Jo Pauly is an American, former collegiate All-American, retired 7-time professional All-Star, right-handed softball pitcher and coach originally from Phoenix, Arizona. She played college softball at Texas A&M–Corpus Christi from 2002-2005 and owns virtually all the pitching records. She is the Big South Conference career strikeouts, ERA, shutouts, WHIP, strikeout ratio, no-hitters (9) and perfect games (2) leader in just three seasons. She joined the National Pro Fastpitch in 2006 and as a rookie earned Pitcher of The Year and currently holds NPF records for the most innings pitched, games played and games started through her 11 seasons as arguably the most successful undrafted player in league history. She is one of five NCAA Division I pitchers to win 100 games, strikeout 1,000 batters, maintain a sub-1.00 ERA and average double digit strikeouts for her entire career.

Jennifer Darlene Ritter is an American, former collegiate All-American, retired softball pitcher and current sports commentator. She played college softball and was a starting pitcher for the Michigan Wolverines softball from 2003 to 2006 and led them to the 2005 Women's College World Series championship. She is the career shutouts record holder for the Wolverines in the Big Ten Conference.

Chelsea Rae Thomas is an American former collegiate softball pitcher, originally from Pleasantville, Iowa. Thomas pitched for the Missouri Tigers in the Big 12 Conference and Southeastern Conference; Thomas is the career leader in wins and strikeouts for the school. She ranks top-10 for no hitters (11) and perfect games (3) in the NCAA Division I. Thomas and was drafted #20 in the National Pro Fastpitch and won a title in 2014.

Keilani Johanna Ricketts Tumanuvao is an American, former collegiate All-American, pro All-Star left-handed hitting softball pitcher. She attended Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, and attended the University of Oklahoma from 2010-2013, where she was the starting pitcher and helped to lead the Sooners to the 2013 NCAA Division I national softball title. As a member of the United States women's national softball team she won 2011 World Cup of Softball. Ricketts currently plays for the USSSA Pride in the National Pro Fastpitch. She is the Sooners career leader in wins and strikeouts. She also ranks for career records in both the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA Division I, where she is one three players to win 100 games with 1,000 strikeouts and hit 50 home runs.

Jolene Nicole Henderson is an American, former collegiate All-American, professional All-Star, right-handed hitting softball pitcher and first baseman and softball Assistant Coach, originally from Elk Grove, California. She was a starting pitcher for the California Golden Bears from 2010-13 where she is the career leader in wins and was a 4-time All-Pac-12 player. She is the reigning National Pro Fastpitch Pitcher of The Year after being drafted #3 overall in 2013 and currently ranks top-10 in career wins, ERA, WHIP and fielding percentage and is on the roster for the independent softball team the USSSA Pride. She also played on the United States women's national softball team in 2014.

Rachel Lauren Garcia is an American former softball pitcher and current pitching coach for UC San Diego. She played college softball for the UCLA Bruins and led the Bruins to the 2019 Women's College World Series championship, where she was named the Most Outstanding Player.

Giselle "G" Juarez is an American, former collegiate All-American softball pitcher. She played college softball at Oklahoma and Arizona State.

Megan Ki'llani Faraimo is an American college softball pitcher for the UCLA Bruins. As a sophomore in 2020, she was named Softball America Pitcher of the Year.

Georgina Louise Corrick is a British born, American raised professional softball player for Athletes Unlimited Softball. She played college softball for the South Florida Bulls. She is also a member of the Great Britain women's national softball team. She was the first pitching Triple Crown winner in NCAA Division I history.
