Hornefia is a genus of Gram-positive, strictly anaerobic, non-spore-forming bacteria belonging to the family Anaerovoracaceae. It was first described in 2020 following the isolation of two species, Hornefia butyriciproducens and Hornefia porci , from the porcine gastrointestinal tract. [1]
The genus name Hornefia honors Professor Mathias W. Hornef, a German microbiologist recognized for his contributions to research on neonatal enteric infections. [2]
