Hunter Huss High School (abbreviated HHHS) is a public high school in the Gaston County Schools school district located in Gastonia, NC. [3] It is the oldest existing high school building still used as a high school in Gaston County. Its attendance range covers southwestern Gaston County and includes the western portions of the City of Gastonia as well as the communities of South Gastonia and Crowders Mountain, and the surrounding rural area. The current principal is Dr. Bryan Denton. [4]

History

Hunter Huss was opened in 1962 and named for Cherryville native and Superintendent of Gaston County Schools W. Hunter Huss (19021971) who served in that position from 1937 to 1968. The cost of construction at the time was $2.1 million, or $20.3 million in current value. [5] The school opened to 818 ninth and tenth grade students on August 29, 1962. Two years later, it had 1,554 in grades ninth through twelfth. [6]

Academics

Hunter Huss High School's Career Academy is part of Gaston County Schools' "School Choice Programs." [7] The Career Academy prepares students for careers "in business, trade and industry, food service, public safety, health science, and technology." [8] Previously, Hunter Huss was an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.

According to the official Hunter Huss website: "The mission of Hunter Huss High School is to empower students to be lifelong learners and equip them to be successful members of society." [9]

Facilities

The campus occupies 52 acres of land and has 178,000 square feet of indoor space. [6] The auditorium can seat 1,465 and the gymnasium has a capacity for over 1,800. The school completed an $11 million renovation project in 2012. [6] The renovations included a new heating and air conditioning system, replacement of some original windows, new plumbing throughout the entire building and extensive masonry work. Updated science labs, a new media center, wiring for wireless internet, and a television and broadcasting studio were also highlights of the improvements. [5]

Dwight "Bo" Lamar is a former professional American basketball player. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, he graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Lamar was a leading NCAA scorer and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1973 American Basketball Association Draft.

William Lamont Strothers is a retired American professional basketball player. Born in Nansemond County, Virginia Strothers played college basketball for Christopher Newport. He was selected in the 1991 NBA draft and had short stints in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Dallas Mavericks. He played in CBA, but he spent most of his professional career overseas. After retiring from professional basketball, he took coaching positions in high school basketball teams.

Mount Zion Christian Academy (MZCA) is a private, college preparatory, non-denominational, co-educational Christian day school and boarding school located in Durham, North Carolina. The Academy is most noted for its successful prep basketball program. The prep program has produced many college players, International players and NBA players.

East Gaston High School is a public high school that is part of the Gaston County Schools district and is located in Mount Holly, North Carolina. Its attendance range covers northeastern Gaston County and includes western portions of Mount Holly, the town of Stanley and the communities of Mountain Island, Alexis, Lucia, Dallas, as well as the surrounding rural areas in Gaston County. The school was established in 1972 when high schools in the neighboring communities of Mount Holly and Stanley were consolidated. Feeder middle schools are Stanley and Mt. Holly, with the surrounding Springfield Elementary School also being within the area.

Etiwanda High School is a public high school in Rancho Cucamonga, California, United States. It is one of the twelve schools of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District and serves students in the Etiwanda community on the northeast side of Rancho Cucamonga.

The school was the result of the merger of two former senior high schools, Holbrook Senior High and Ashley Senior High. The first class graduated in 1971. Hassan Niam Whiteside is an American professional basketball player for the Piratas de Quebradillas of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN). He played college basketball for the Marshall Thundering Herd before being selected in the second round by the Sacramento Kings in the 2010 NBA draft. After joining the Miami Heat in 2014, Whiteside was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2016, when he also led the NBA in blocks. He led the league in rebounding in 2017. He was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers and again led the league in blocks in his first season with Portland. Whiteside has also played on various Chinese and Lebanese teams.
