I Was a Cub Scout were a two-piece synthpop/indie rock band from Nottingham, England, consisting of Todd Marriott (vocals, synthesizers, guitar, formerly of Through Winter) and William Bowerman (drums, formerly of Sixteen Hours). [1] [2] The band started in 2005, and split in July 2008.
Marriott started the project in June 2005, becoming a band with the addition of Bowerman in 2006. [3] [4] After releasing their first single they were signed to XL Recordings label Abeano. "Pink Squares" was released in November 2006, and followed in 2007 with "I Hate Nightclubs" and "Our Smallest Adventures".
A compilation of tracks from the band's early singles, Iwasacubscout, was released in 2007. The band's first album proper, I Want You To Know That There Is Always Hope, was released in February 2008, preceded by a new version of "Pink Squares", released as a double A-side with "Echoes", which peaked at no. 71 on the UK Singles Chart. [5] The album was well received by critics, with Stewart Mason of Allmusic calling it "ultra-catchy synth pop", and the NME commenting on "positive songwriting which makes life that little more liveable". [6] [7] PopMatters' Andrew Martin called it "a damn fine effort worthy of a listen". [8] The tour to promote the album was interrupted after Marriott was hit in the face with a glass at their concert in Southampton. [9]
The duo added James Spence of Rolo Tomassi, Daniel Mothers of Reno Dakota + Franko Fraize and Sam Hudson of Youth Movies as touring members. [10] Follow up single "The Hunter's Daughter" was withdrawn prior to release after the band announced their split in June 2008, citing "countless problems over the past year or so", although they continued to complete their UK tour into the following month. Since the split, both former members have created new bands. Todd Marriott has formed YGT, an electronic duo with Tom Mclean. [14] [15] [16]
Immediately after IWACS split, Bowerman formed the instrumental band Brontide. Bowerman also plays live and also session drums for La Roux and is tour drummer for Summer Camp and Paul Mullen (of yourcodenameis:milo) also announced on his Twitter that he had been recording with Will and Gordon Moakes of Bloc Party. The Clash were an English rock band that formed in London in 1976 and were key players in the original wave of British punk rock. Billed as "The Only Band That Matters", they used elements of reggae, dub, funk, ska, and rockabilly, and they contributed to the post-punk and new wave movements that followed punk. The Automatic were a Welsh rock band. The band's last-known lineup was composed of Robin Hawkins on vocals, bass and synthesisers, James Frost on guitar, synthesisers, backing vocals and occasional bass, Iwan Griffiths on drums and Paul Mullen on vocals, guitar and synthesiser. Mullen joined after the departure of Alex Pennie, who provided synthesiser, percussion and vocals.

Until 2006, the band only named tracks with numbers, in the order that they were written. The band had used faux Cyrillic, with its name occasionally typeset as ¡FФЯWДЯD, RUSSIД!. The band went on hiatus after the release of their second album, Life Processes, in 2008. They re-formed in 2013 for a show at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds in November 2013 for its 10th anniversary, and then played the Live at Leeds Festival at Leeds Town Hall in 2014.
Little Man Tate are a British four-piece indie rock band from Sheffield, England who formed in 2005. The band quickly began attracting interest from several record labels and in March 2006 signed to V2 Records. Their fifth single, "Sexy in Latin" was released on 22 January 2007 and became their highest-charting single to date. The band parted ways with their label in November 2007 following the acquisition of V2 by Universal Music Group and subsequently signed with Skint Records.
The Maccabees were an English indie rock band, formed in 2004 in London. They released four albums: Colour It In in 2007, followed by Wall of Arms in 2009, Given to the Wild which was released on 9 January 2012 and their last album Marks to Prove It released on 31 July 2015. The band announced that they decided to disband in August 2016, with farewell gigs in 2017.
I Want You to Know That There Is Always Hope is the only studio album by British indie rock band I Was a Cub Scout and was released on 18 February 2008. The album was produced by Hugh Padgham and released on the XL Recordings label Abeano.
Young Legionnaire are a British band formed in 2009. Since 2010, the band's lineup has consisted of founders Paul Mullen and Gordon Moakes alongside drummer Dean Pearson. Will Bowerman was the band's drummer from their formation until his departure in 2010, returning to touring duties with La Roux.
The Spook School were a British four-piece indie pop band from Edinburgh, Scotland. The name is a reference to the Glasgow School.
Brontide was a British instrumental rock band formed in 2008, featuring members who were also members of I Was a Cub Scout, La Roux, Rolo Tomassi, and Dua Lipa's band. They released two albums before splitting up in 2017.
