Ian Matthews (born 20 June 1971) is an English musician, best known as the drummer for the rock band Kasabian.
Matthews interest in drums was first started by his babysitter, a friend of his dad, whose family had a drumkit, [1] he also played piano as his dad was a pianist but "realised that I wasn’t interested" [1] He also took drum lessons from a local session drummer who taught him to play in a jazz style with brushes. [1] Matthews played his first gig with his dad’s social club gig when their drummer was ill, he "got £5. From that point I was hooked" [1]
Matthews played gigs with his dad for several year during school and then joined a Bristol drum corps called The Troopers when he was ten, [1] he also did some school orchestras and in the band of the Avon and Somerset fire brigade, playing military type stuff and lots of reading. He also did wedding gigs and jazz gigs. [1]
Matthews started his career when a teacher told him "if I wanna get on the scene I needed to make sure to make friends and connect to as many engineers as possible. That’s where you meet the musicians who are doing stuff and where you get a call of people who need a drummer." [1] He got work in a studio ran by a friend of a friend called big bonk where he used to be a session drummer, one group that recorded at that studio was Kasabian who had some money to spend on a drummer and were recommended Matthews. [1] Before his first session with the band he sprained his ankle and almost cancelled but continued to do the session in pain, the band were "blown away" and Matthews did some more session with the band after that. [1]
Matthews didn't join Kasabian straight away in 2002 as he had other commitments but he was later called up in 2004 and became a full band member in 2005. [1] Prior to Kasabian, Matthews played with a number of noted local Bristol bands, such as K-Passa, [2] CCQ, [2] and Sissi. [2]
When not touring or recording with Kasabian, he often plays small jazz/funk gigs in and around Bristol. He has recorded with Bristol artist James Morton's Porkchop on Don't You Worry 'Bout That album. [3]
He cites Mitch Mitchell, Tony Williams and Buddy Rich as his strongest drumming influences. [4]
In 2015, Matthews joined with Al Murray, Keith Keough, Stuart Warmington and Al Kitching in founding the British Drum Company.
Matthews continues to tour with Kasabian to this day [5] and also does session work, most notably on The Cult's 2022 album Under the Midnight Sun. [6] [7]
Matthews has used various drum kits and cymbals over the years. Currently he is using British Drum Co Drums, Zildjian cymbals Remo Drum Heads, Vic Firth Sticks and Natal percussion.
Matthews is left-handed. He broke his left hand when touring with Kasabian in Europe in February 2010 and was replaced by his drum technician Laurie Jenkins for a show and the NME Awards performance of "Vlad the Impaler".
He got his first drum kit when he was four and by the time he was seven, he played his first gig in a pub and was capable of laying "a pretty good waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, and tango". [8]

James Joseph Chamberlin is an American drummer and record producer. Described as "one of the most powerful drummers in rock," he is best known as the drummer for the alternative rock band the Smashing Pumpkins. Following the 2000 breakup of the band, Chamberlin joined Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan in the supergroup Zwan and also formed his own current group, the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex.

Albert J. Jackson Jr. was an American drummer, producer, and songwriter. He was a founding member of Booker T. & the M.G.'s, a group of session musicians who worked for Stax Records and produced their own instrumentals. Jackson was affectionately dubbed "The Human Timekeeper" for his drumming ability. He was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2015, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Booker T. & the M.G.'s in 1992.
Brooks Wackerman is an American musician. He is the current drummer of heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold, which he joined in 2015. His first album with Avenged Sevenfold was The Stage (2016). He was previously the drummer for the punk rock band Bad Religion. Wackerman has also performed, either as a member or a session or touring member, with Blink-182, Bad4Good, Infectious Grooves, Glenn Tipton, Mass Mental, Suicidal Tendencies, The Vandals, Avril Lavigne, Korn, Kidneys, Fear and the Nervous System, Tenacious D, Farmikos, Tom Delonge, and Big Talk. His brothers, Chad Wackerman, and John Wackerman, are also drummers.
Joshua Ryan Freese is an American drummer. A member of punk rock band the Vandals since 1989, Freese has also been a member of new wave band Devo since 1996 and rock band Foo Fighters since 2023.
Kasabian are an English rock band formed in Leicester in 1997 by lead vocalist Tom Meighan, guitarist and second vocalist Sergio Pizzorno, guitarist Chris Karloff and bassist Chris Edwards. Drummer Ian Matthews joined in 2004. Karloff left the band in 2006 and founded a new band called Black Onassis. Jay Mehler joined as touring lead guitarist in 2006, leaving for Liam Gallagher's Beady Eye in 2013, to be replaced by Tim Carter, who later became a full-time band member in 2021. Meighan left the band in July 2020, with Pizzorno stepping up as full-time lead vocalist.
