Iatan is a former unincorporated community and ghost town in Mitchell County, Texas. [2] [3] [1] The town was situated about 20 miles west of Colorado City, the seat of Mitchell County. [4] Founded in 1881 as a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railroad, it was also briefly known as Vista, Texas. [2] The name "Iatan" is thought to have come from the nearby Williams-Waddell Iatan Tank Ranch. Other sources believe the name was originally "Satan's Flat," but when the application for a post office was put in, the "S" was misread and became an "I." [5]

A post office, owned by Daniel Crowe, opened in Iatan in March 1890 and served it until September 10, 1924, when it was relocated to be in a neighboring town, Westbrook. [3] Iatan's sole educational institution became part of Westbrook's district 1938, at a time when the community had a population of about 125. The population diminished over time, and in the 1950s only 20 people called Iatan home. The population remained at that level for many years.

The city has been considered a ghost town since the 1960s. When 1972 arrived, the last building remaining was its railroad depot. As of 2024, the only remaining evidence of the community is a cemetery. [3] [2]

Provident City is a ghost town in the far southern panhandle of Colorado County in the U.S. state of Texas. The former settlement is located along County Road 190. The town was first settled through a land promotion scheme in 1909 and enjoyed a brief heyday. When the hoped-for railroad obviously would never come to town, people began moving away. The post office closed in 1953, and most of the land was bought up for ranching. The town no longer exists, though the original hotel survives in private hands. Reaching the site requires driving 4.3 miles (6.9 km) on a gravel road from the nearest highway.

Osage is a ghost town in northwestern Colorado County in the U.S. state of Texas. The one-time settlement was situated on Harvey Creek near the junction of County Roads 205 and 208 a few miles to the northeast of Weimar. At the time of the Civil War, the community was substantial enough to provide a company of soldiers to a Texas regiment in the Confederate States Army. A notable school flourished in Osage starting in the 1870s, but in that decade the railroad was built through Weimar instead. By 1900, the local commercial establishments had moved to Weimar and the town faded out of existence. In 2013, the area was sparsely settled.

Cuthbert is a ghost town in Mitchell County, Texas, United States. Cuthbert was established in 1890 when the founder D. T. Bozeman built a wagon yard and store. The community and post office were named for Thomas Cuthbertson, a family friend of the Bozemans. By the early 1920s, Cuthbert had a church, two stores, a blacksmith shop, a cotton gin, telephone office, and a school. In 1920, the T. and P. Abrams No. 1 oil well, one of the first commercial oil ventures in the Permian Basin, was drilled just over a mile north of the town. A post office, two businesses, and a population of twenty-five were reported at the community in 1936, the year that its school was consolidated with that of Colorado City. After World War II, the improvement of rural roads in the area led to Cuthbert's decline as it lost its trade to Colorado City. The Cuthbert post office was discontinued circa 1960, when the town reported one business and a population of twenty-five. By 1974, only a cemetery and scattered farms remained in the area.

Buford is an unincorporated community in Mitchell County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 25 in 2000.

Monterey is a ghost town in Angelina County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located within the Lufkin, Texas micropolitan area.
