Wyoming has one of the weakest connections to ice hockey in the United States.
As the least populous state and the second most sparsely populated, [2] Wyoming has never been an attractive target by external sources in the sport. The few attempts from internal initiatives have seen mixed results and have been relegated to the fringes.
The first major attempt at adding ice hockey came from the flagship college, the University of Wyoming. The Cowboys played their first varsity season in 1948–49 but ran into some major problems. While the team had sought to capitalize on the westward expansion of ice hockey and play a combination of college teams and amateur clubs (similar to other schools at the time), Wyoming had a tough time scheduling opponents. The team was limited to approximately 30 games over three seasons, mostly due to travel costs to and from Laramie. With little chance of their situation improving, the team was shuttered in 1951 and had only resurfaced off and on as a club sport afterwards. [3]
No further serious efforts were made to establish a team in Wyoming until the early-21st century when the Coeur d'Alene Colts, a junior team in the Northern Pacific Hockey League (NorPac) moved to Cody. The Yellowstone Quake were terrible in their first two seasons but then experienced a sharp swing in year 3. The newfound success allowed the team to establish itself in its new home and leave the NorPac when instability threatened the league. After founding the American West Hockey League with several other former members of the NorPac, the league merged with the NA3HL in 2014. [4] The team was able to win three division titles before the end of the decade and remain a member of the league (as of 2023). Yellowstone was joined by the expansion Gillette Wild in 2011, and the relocated Sheridan Hawks in 2019.
While the NA3HL increased its footprint in Wyoming, the 2011 relocated of the Tulsa Rampage to Cheyenne was less successful. The Cheyenne Stampede were members of the WSHL, a Tier III Junior A league. The Stampede had some success in their first three seasons, however, after 2014 the club faltered and produced 5 consecutive losing seasons. In 2019, the team's financial situation changed due to a new initiative led by Cheyenne mayor, Marian Orr. Team owner Mark Lantz claimed that in the new lease offered in 2018, the team's area fees were increased by 52% and that they were prevented from advertising at the Cheyenne Ice and Events Center. [5] Orr responded that the new lease was arranged so that the rinks would no be subsidized with taxpayer money. Lantz put the team up for sale while negotiations were underway but no buyer was found and when the deadline for extending the lease passed, the team ceased operations. [6]

While the state does have a decent level of engagement with the sport (0.379% of the population registered with USA Hockey in 2023), [7] the overall low population and long stretches without an established team have left Wyoming without any ice hockey players of note.
The Bozeman Icedogs are a Tier III Junior ice hockey team located in Bozeman, Montana. The team is a member of the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL). The Icedogs play home games at the Haynes Pavilion located at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds.
The Western States Hockey League (WSHL) was a junior ice hockey league established in 1993. It was sanctioned by the United Hockey Union, the junior hockey branch of the Amateur Athletic Union. Previously, it was sanctioned by USA Hockey from 1994 to 2011. Teams played approximately 50 games in the regular season schedule, mimicking what players would experience at the collegiate level. As of January 2022, there are no active teams in the league following the creation of the Can-Am Junior Hockey League by former WSHL teams.
The Minnesota Junior Hockey League (MnJHL) was a USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier III junior ice hockey league operated out of Minneapolis-Saint Paul.
The Billings Bulls were a junior ice hockey organization based in Billings, Montana. They most recently played home games at the 550-seat Centennial Ice Arena and due to the arena's small size, the Bulls frequently sold-out games. They previously played their home games in the Metrapark which had a max capacity of 9,000 for hockey games. However, a negotiating dispute with arena officials and local county commissioners resulted in the team losing its lease.
The North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) is an American Tier III junior ice hockey league that consists of teams from Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Sanctioned by USA Hockey, for most of the league's existence, the winner of the NA3HL playoffs would advance to play for the Tier III National Championship, however, this has not been held since 2015.
The Cape Cod Islanders were a Tier III junior ice hockey team from Massachusetts. They were most recently a member of the North American 3 Hockey League and played at the Falmouth Ice Arena in Falmouth, Massachusetts. In 2019, they announced they were relocating to Canton, Massachusetts, as the Canton Cubs, but were removed from the league schedule at the beginning of the season.
The Helena Bighorns are a Junior A ice hockey team in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) based in Helena, Montana United States. The team plays their home games at the 1,600-seat Helena Ice Arena.
The Yellowstone Quake is a USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier III junior ice hockey team playing in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL). The team plays their home games at Victor Riley Arena in Cody, Wyoming. The franchise is a non-profit corporation operated by the Park County Junior A Hockey Program.
The Cheyenne Stampede were a United Hockey Union-sanctioned junior ice hockey team in the Western States Hockey League (WSHL). The Stampede played their home games at the Cheyenne Ice and Events Center. The team announced it would not participate in the 2019–20 season due to a lease dispute.
The Sheridan Hawks are a USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier III junior ice hockey team in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL). The team plays home games at the Sheridan Ice M&M’s Center in Sheridan, Wyoming.
The Metro Jets are a non-sanctioned junior ice hockey team that plays their home games at Mount Clemens Ice Arena in Mount Clemens, Michigan. They are members of the Great Lakes Conference in the United States Premier Hockey League's Premier Division. Players are ages 16–20, carry amateur status under Junior A guidelines and hope to earn a spot on higher levels of junior ice hockey in the United States and Canada, Canadian major junior, collegiate, and eventually professional teams. The Jets won the 2002 USA Hockey Junior B Silver Cup national championship.
The New England Knights were a Tier III junior ice hockey team in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL). The team played out of Raynham IcePlex in Raynham, Massachusetts. The Knights' organization are owned by Lovell Hockey, which also operates boys' and girls' Knights youth teams as well as the Boston Advantage organization in the United States Premier Hockey League. The junior Knights team was not listed as a member of the NA3HL for the 2020–21 season, but the organization continued to host its youth teams.
The American West Hockey League (AWHL) was an American Tier III Junior ice hockey league based in Montana and Wyoming. The league was a member of USA Hockey and was founded in 2011. The AWHL merged into the NA3HL in March 2014.
The Great Falls Americans are a USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier III Junior A ice hockey team from Great Falls, Montana, playing at the Great Falls IcePlex in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL). The players, ages 16–20, carry amateur status under Junior A guidelines and hope to earn a place on a Canadian major junior, collegiate or minor professional team.
North American 3 Eastern Hockey League (NA3EHL) was a USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier III junior ice hockey league. The league had teams in the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. In 2016, the league merged with the North American 3 Hockey League.
The Lewiston/Auburn Nordiques were a Tier III Junior "A" ice hockey team from Lewiston, Maine. The team was a member of the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) since 2016 and played home games at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée since 2015. The franchise relocated several times under the operation of the Fighting Spirit organization before it was sold to the Colisée owner, Jim Cain, in 2017.
The Oklahoma City Ice Hawks, formerly the Oklahoma City Jr. Blazers, were a Tier III junior ice hockey team, based in Edmond, Oklahoma, in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. The Ice Hawks competed in the USA Hockey-sanctioned North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) after playing as a member of the United Hockey Union-sanctioned Western States Hockey League (WSHL) from 2014 to 2020. Their home games were played at the Arctic Edge Ice Arena.
The North Iowa Bulls are a Tier II junior ice hockey team in the North American Hockey League (NAHL). They play their home games at the Mason City Multipurpose Arena in Mason City, Iowa. The organization also operates a Tier III junior team in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) that was known as the North Iowa Bulls from 2011 to 2021 before relocating the Tier II Amarillo Bulls' franchise to Mason City and rebranding the Tier III team as the Mason City Toros. The Bulls are coached by Todd Sanden, who has been with the North Iowa team since its inception in 2011.
The Northeast Generals are a Tier II junior ice hockey team based in Attleboro, Massachusetts. The team competes in the North American Hockey League (NAHL).
The Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks are a USA Hockey-sanctioned junior ice hockey organization based in Danbury, Connecticut. The organization has junior teams in the Tier II North American Hockey League and the Tier III North American 3 Hockey League, both of which play home games at the Danbury Ice Arena.
