India Art Fair, previously known as India Art Summit, is an annual Indian modern and contemporary art fair held in New Delhi, India. [1] The fair includes paintings, sculptures, photography, mixed media, prints, drawings and video art. The first three editions of the fair were organized at Pragati Maidan, [2] one of India's largest and oldest exhibitions grounds. Starting from the 4th edition, the venue was shifted to NSIC grounds, Okhla. First held in 2008, it is India's largest art fair. [3] The art fair includes several pavilions of exhibits by galleries and solo projects by several artists. It also has an art education series with guided walks conducted by curators and students of art history. Simultaneously, there is a speakers' forum with panel of Indian and international experts from the art domain to discuss issues pertaining to the art in the region. It focuses on key issues related with the art production, art market and its reception in India.

Contents

The first fair targeted over 6000 visitors with 34 exhibiting galleries at the fair, and over 550 contemporary and modern artworks. [4] The fair rapidly gained popularity, and the first three fairs had a total 146,000 visitors, making it among the world's most popular art fairs. [5]

History

India Art Fair is the biggest fair of modern and contemporary Indian art in the world. Its first three editions attracted over 146,000 visitors and its fourth edition held in 2012 canvassed 91 exhibitors from 20 countries. Over the years the fair has mainly showcased Indian modernists (including Bombay Progressive Artists' Group), Indian diaspora artists such as Anish Kapoor, contemporary Indian artists, international artists and art from the subcontinent. [6]

Following in the tradition of international art fairs and other global platforms for art exhibition and sale, Neha Kirpal, Founder and Director of India Art Fair realised the need for a similar platform in India to respond to the global interest in Indian art. This led to the first ever India Art Summit (IAS) in 2008. It was patronised by prominent Indian artists like Anjolie Ela Menon, S H Raza, Krishen Khanna and Keshav Malik. [4] Since then it has taken place every year with the exception of 2010. Neha Kirpal, the owner of the India Art Fair divested 49 percent of its stake in early 2011 to two stakeholders, Sandy Angus and Will Ramsay, co-founders of the Hong Kong Art Fair, to create a larger network. [7] In 2009 the highlight of the fair was a display of Pablo Picasso's works, exhibited by Beck & Eggeling, a German gallery. The same year Lisson Gallery brought diaspora artist Anish Kapoor's sculptures to India for the first time. [8]

After ten years Neha Kirpal sold her interest in India Art Fair and transferred her interest to mental health. [9]

Annually

2008: Inaugural edition, known as India Art Summit, opened at Pragati Maidan The first fair targeted over 6000 visitors with 34 exhibiting galleries at the fair, and 550 contemporary and modern artworks.

2009: The second edition saw the number of exhibiting galleries increase to 54 with attendance of over 40,000 visitors. [10]

2011: The third edition hosted 84 gallery booths, and visitor levels significantly rose to 128,000. [11] Also in 2011, in advance of the 4th edition, Neha Kirpal divested a stake in India Art Fair to two new strategic partners; Sandy Angus (Chairman of global exhibitions group Montgomery Worldwide) and Will Ramsay (Founder of PULSE Art Fairs, and Affordable Art Fairs).

2012: For the fourth edition the fair moved to the NSIC Grounds in Okhla and hosted 90 galleries from 20 countries, 1000 artists from around the world, with 80,000 visitor [12] and visits by 26 Museum groups including representatives from the Tate, Guggenheim, New Museum, San Jose Museum of Art, Pompidou Centre, MOMA and the Singapore Art Museum. [13]

2013: At the preview alone of the fifth edition over 3,000 works of art were sold by 105 exhibitors from 24 countries. [14] YES Bank joined as Presenting Partners, maintaining the partnership for the next three editions.

2014: The sixth edition featured 91 booths and modern and contemporary works by over 1,000 artists from India and overseas. Participants included 12 new galleries from outside India, including Israel, France, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Turkey and Karachi, Pakistan. The Himalayas Art Museum in Shanghai and the Mark Rothko Museum in Latvia both participated in the fair for the first time. [15] A public sculpture installation titled M.I.S.S.I.N.G. highlighted the gender gap in India. [16]

2015: The seventh edition hosted 91 exhibiting booths and over 80,000 visitors. Sales were up 25% and were reported not just from Delhi, but also from tier-II and tier-III cities such as Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and Jaipur. [17] A number of new spaces were launched, including the Design Store located in the new IAF Courtyard, as well as a new rooftop restaurant

2016: The eighth edition: BMW joined as Presenting Partners, and the fair was restructured into 5 main sections: Galleries, featuring leading Indian, South Asian and international galleries; Focus, showing solo presentations which have been curated by participating galleries or institutions; Institutional, showcasing leading international and Indian museums and art foundations presenting elements of their programmes or collaborations commissioned specially for the fair; Platform, representing young emerging artists or collectives from throughout South Asia, open to galleries and foundations within the region; and Projects, showing artworks, including large scale sculptures or site specific installations, at the fair. On the 12 September 2016, MCH Swiss Exhibitions (Basel) Ltd., a company of MCH Group Ltd., acquired 60.3% of the shares in Seventh Plane Pvt. Ltd in New Delhi, the organiser of India Art Fair. With the participation of MCH Group and the co-ownership with Angus Montgomery Ltd. (29.7%) and the Founding Director Neha Kirpal (10%), India Art Fair will have new ownership for its ninth edition taking place 2–5 February 2017. [18] Kirpal, who established the fair in 2008, will still play a key role in its development. The new ownership comes into effect ahead of the next edition of the fair in February 2017 although the value of its engagement will not be fully felt until 2018. [19] India is the “first region of focus” for MCH, indicative of the growing international interest in Indian and South Asian art, and the building of a strong cultural ecosystem in the region, from Kochi Biennale to Dhaka Art Summit. [20]

2017: Jagdip Jagpal was appointed as Fair Director in August 2017. [21]

The Heard Museum is a private, not-for-profit museum in Phoenix, Arizona, United States, dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art. It presents the stories of American Indian people from a first-person perspective, as well as exhibitions of traditional and contemporary art by American Indian artists and artists influenced by American Indian art. The Heard Museum collaborates with American Indian artists and tribal communities on providing visitors with a distinctive perspective about the art of Native people, especially those from the Southwest.

National Museum, New Delhi Museum in India

The National Museum in New Delhi, also known as the National Museum of India, is one of the largest museums in India. Established in 1949, it holds a variety of articles ranging from pre-historic era to modern works of art. It functions under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The museum is situated on Janpath. The blue–print of the National Museum had been prepared by the Gwyer Committee set up by the Government of India in 1946. The museum has around 200,000 works of art, mostly Indian, but some of foreign origin, covering over 5,000 years.

Art Basel Swiss annual art fair

Art Basel is a for-profit, privately owned and managed, international art fair staged annually in Basel, Switzerland; Miami Beach; Hong Kong and from 2022, Paris. Art Basel works in collaboration with the host city's local institutions to help grow and develop art programs. While Art Basel provides a platform for galleries to show and sell their work to buyers, it has gained a large international audience of art spectators and students as well.

Subodh Gupta Indian artist (born 1964)

Subodh Gupta, is an Indian contemporary artist based in New Delhi. His work encompasses sculpture, installation, painting, photography, performance and video.

Rashid Rana is a Pakistani artist. He has been included in numerous exhibitions in Pakistan and abroad with his works in abstractions on canvas, collaborations with a billboard painter, photographic/video performances, collages using found material, photo mosaics, photo sculptures, and large stainless steel works.

T. V. Santhosh is an Indian artist based in Mumbai. He obtained his graduate degree in painting from Santiniketan and master's degree in Sculpture from M.S. University, Baroda. Santhosh has acquired a major presence in the Indian and International art scene over the last decade with several successful shows with international galleries and museums. His earlier works tackle global issues of war and terrorism and its representation and manipulation by politics and the media. Santhosh's sculptural installation "Houndingdown" was exhibited in Frank Cohen collection ‘Passage to India’. Some of his prominent museum shows are ‘Aftershock’ at Sainsbury Centre, Contemporary Art Norwich, England in 2007 and ’Continuity and Transformatuseum show promoted by Provincia di Milano, Italy. He lives and works in Mumbai.

Jatin Das is an Indian painter, sculptor and muralist. He is counted amongst the most contemporary artists of India.

Goa State Museum

Goa State Museum, also known as the State Archaeology Museum, Panaji, is a museum in Goa, India. Established in 1977, it contains departments including Ancient History and Archaeology, Art and Craft, and Geology. The museum, as of 2008, had about 8,000 artifacts on display, including stone sculptures, wooden objects, carvings, bronzes, paintings, manuscripts, rare coins, and anthropological objects. Currently, the Museum is located at the Adil Shah's Palace in Panaji. The Museum's erstwhile premises at the EDC Complex in Patto, Panaji shall be demolished to make way for a new Museum building.

Comic Con India

Comic Con India (CCI) is a series of annual comic-based conventions held in India. The first edition was held in New Delhi in 2011 and over the years has expanded to other major cities in India such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmadabad. There are annual comic cons now in all these cities. Cumulatively these five cities attract over 200,000 visitors with over 1200 exhibitors. Jatin Varma, the founder & managing director of Comic Con India, launched the first comic con in India in Delhi in 2011. Since 2014, Comic Con India has been conducted in collaboration with ReedPop, the organisers of the New York Comic Con and the MCM London Comic Con.

Riyas Komu

Riyas Komu born in Kerala is a critically acclaimed multimedia artist and curator based in Mumbai. He has invested his time in art education and developing art infrastructure in India. Komu's works are inspired by social conflicts and political movements and topics like migration and displacement. His hyper-realistic oil portraits of people resemble socialist-realist propaganda art and indeed one of his portraits is strikingly titled “Why Everybody should Look Like Mao”. In 2007, Komu was one of two artists from India selected for the 52nd Venice Biennale by curator Robert Storr. Later, he went on to represent the Iranian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2015. Komu also participated in the Jogja Biennale, Indonesia, 2011. Riyas born in 1971 in a small town in Thrissur District of Kerala. He lives and works in Mumbai.

Bose Krishnamachari

Bose Krishnamachari is an internationally acclaimed Malayali painter and Artist-Curator based in Mumbai, India. He was born in 1963 at Magattukara village near Angamaly, Kerala. He had done his early schooling at GHSS Puliyanam. He took his BFA from Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai in (1991), and then completed his MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in(2000). He was a recipient of the award of the Kerala Lalita Kala Akademi(1985), British Council travel award (1993), Mid America Arts Alliance Award(1996), Chales Wallace India Trust Award (1999–2000), Life Time Fellowship Award- Kerala Lalita Kala Academy and was first runner up for the Bose Pacia Prize for Modern Art, New York, 2001. His work comprises vivid abstract paintings, figurative drawings, sculpture, photography, multimedia installations and architecture. Since 1985 he lives and works in Mumbai. Bose is the founder member and President of Kochi Biennale Foundation and Biennale Director of international exhibition of contemporary art, Kochi-Muziris Biennale.

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is an international exhibition of contemporary art held in the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. It is the largest art exhibition in the country and the biggest contemporary art festival in Asia. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is an initiative of the Kochi Biennale Foundation with support from the Government of Kerala. The concept of Kochi-Muziris Biennale was ideated and executed by Dr. Venu IAS, who was the culture Secretary, Government of Kerala. The exhibition is set in spaces across Kochi, with shows being held in existing galleries, halls, and site-specific installations in public spaces, heritage buildings and disused structures.

Gayatri Sinha is an art critic and curator based in New Delhi, India. Her primary areas of research are around the structures of gender and iconography, media, economics and social history. She has initiated Critical Collective, a forum for thinking on conceptual frames within art history and practice in contemporary India.

Dhaka Art Summit is an art summit held in Dhaka, Bangladesh and is organised by Samdani Art Foundation, a non- profit art infrastructure development organisation founded by Nadia Samdani. and Rajeeb Samdani in 2011. The summit displays artworks such as paintings, photography, sculptures, installations, digital art, video art, etc.

Thukral & Tagra

Thukral and Tagra are an artist duo composed of Jiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra. They work with a wide range of media including painting, sculpture, installations, interactive games, video, performance and design.

Ebenezer Sunder Singh

Ebenezer Sunder Singh is an Indian-American visual artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Singh works primarily as a painter, sculptor, photographer and filmmaker.

Vibha Galhotra

Vibha Galhotra, born 1978 is an Indian conceptual artist based in New Delhi. Her work includes large-scale installations, sculptures, drawings, films that explore themes of ecological and environmental concerns. Her works address the shifting topography of the world under the impact of globalization and growth. She sees herself as being part of the restructuring of culture, society and geography – of New Delhi, and the world.

Asim Waqif is an Indian artist based in New Delhi, whose work is influenced by interdisciplinary fields of art, architecture, ecology and design. He makes site-specific or interactive installations and sculptures, which are often made out of discarded or reclaimed waste materials, like bamboo, rope, tar or trashed metal.

Neha Kirpal is the founder of the India Art Fair in 2008. She sold her interest in the Fair after ten years.
