Innovation Research Interchange (IRI) is a division of the National Association of Manufacturers, a nonprofit association based in Washington, D. C., United States. IRI was founded as a private non-profit association in 1938 and merged with the NAM in 2022. IRI's mission is "To enhance the innovation leader's and innovation teams' ability to create new value and growth by providing platforms and learning opportunities to share best and next practices, improving team and individual competencies, providing strategic information on the future of innovation execution and leadership, and enhancing and supporting a vibrant community for innovation leadership."

History

IRI held its first meeting on February 25, 1938, [1] after the National Research Council established it as a branch within its Division of Engineering and Industrial Research (DEIR). [2] [3] IRI's original membership consisted of fourteen companies; the organization's first president was Maurice Holland, then director of DEIR. [4] On April 17, 1945, IRI separated from the National Research Council and formed a nonprofit, 501(c)(6) organization, incorporated in the State of New York. [5]

Governance

IRI governance resides in its membership. Each member organization is responsible for choosing a voting representative to vote on its behalf in IRI elections. A simple majority is required for any action to be taken. The membership is led by an elected sixteen-member Board of Directors, with each member serving three years. The board also appoints a president who serves as Chief Staff Administrator and deciding voter should a tie occur. [14]

Membership

To qualify for IRI membership, an organization should have as its primary purpose the creation, production, and marketing of physical or intellectual products or services based on technological innovation. Federal laboratories involved in technological innovation, research, design, or technical support of products and services may also join as Associate Members. The Board of Directors retains the right to offer limited membership to others at its discretion. [15]

Membership includes free attendance to IRI events and a subscription to IRI's official journal, Research-Technology Management (RTM).

Publications

IRI maintains a bimonthly journal, Research-Technology Management (RTM). It publishes peer-reviewed articles covering the full spectrum of technological innovation, from R&D through product development to commercialization. Oversight of the journal is provided by an appointed Board of Editors; the Editor-in-Chief and the Managing Editor provide day-to-day management of RTM.

IRI also issues weekly e-newsletters, press releases and other marketing materials on important events, and occasional white papers on a variety of topics.

Brown is the co-author of The Social Life of Information, a 2000 book which analyzes the adoption of information technologies.

Reinhilde Veugelers is a Belgian economist and Professor of Managerial Economics, Strategy and Innovation at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven from Belgium, known for her research on science and innovation. She is also a scholar at Bruegel in Brussels and at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington D.C.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">IRI Achievement Award</span>

The IRI Achievement Award, established by the Industrial Research Institute (IRI) in 1973, is awarded "to honor outstanding accomplishment in individual creativity and innovation that contributes broadly to the development of industry and to the benefit of society." The recipient is first nominated by an IRI member organization for his or her invention, innovation, or process improvement, and then voted on by a nine-member Awards Committee, led by the immediate past-chairman of IRI's Board of Directors.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">IRI Medal</span> Award for advances in technology

The IRI Medal, established by the Industrial Research Institute (IRI) in 1946, recognizes and honors leaders of technology for their outstanding accomplishments in technological innovation which contribute broadly to the development of industry and to the benefit of society. One side of the medal depicts a scientist peering into a microscope as a symbol of the never-ending quest for innovation; a pegasus running in the background as a symbol of imagination; and clouds issuing from a retort revealing the practical results of humanity's ability to harness natural forces to meet its needs. The reverse side of the medal is an adaptation of the official seal of the Institute. This award is traditionally presented each spring at the IRI Annual Meeting alongside the IRI Achievement Award.

Research-Technology Management (RTM) is a journal published by the Industrial Research Institute (IRI). It publishes peer-reviewed, research-based articles and personal perspective pieces written by and for R&D practitioners. Published bimonthly, the journal is offered both in print and electronically to subscribers interested in the management of innovation.

The Research-on-Research (ROR) Committee was created by the Arlington, Virginia Industrial Research Institute in 1968 to fill in a perceived gap in the arena of technological research and development (R&D). The Committee oversees working groups which examine current research on a particular topic, to identify best practices for effective management of R&D. The working groups, under loose supervision by the Committee, meet several times a year, usually at IRI-sponsored events,. Their findings are typically published in IRI’s bimonthly journal, Research-Technology Management (RTM).

Industrial forensics is a holistic-based analytical and consultative response to problems encountered at any stage in the industrial manufacturing process. It differs from a traditional analytical approach that routinely identifies a problem and then reports the data in that its goal is to understand the problem, interpret the data and use those elements to prevent the problem from recurring. It is both prognostic and diagnostic. In its broadest sense, it is a holistic approach that examines each step in the product life cycle from initial R&D through final product and beyond to predict, identify, prevent and resolve manufacturing issues.

Bo Niclas Adler is a Swedish entrepreneur, scientist, founder and CEO for Synthesis Group. As an entrepreneur he has built several biopharma and medical technology companies as well as both VC and PE funds dedicated to life-sciences. As a management researcher he is known for his work on "Managing complex product development" and on "Collaborative research in organizations."

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Technology Agency of the Czech Republic</span>

The Technology Agency of the Czech Republic(TA CR) (Czech: Technologická agentura České republiky) is a Czech government agency, founded in 2009 to enhance and encourage cooperation between research organizations supported by the state and the business sector. Within its programmes, projects of applied research, experimental development and innovations are elected and financed.
