Inglewood railway station is a single-platform railway station on the Marton - New Plymouth Line serving the town of Inglewood in New Zealand's Taranaki district. Located on Moa Street, the station is the oldest remaining railway station in New Zealand still on its original site. [1]
Inglewood railway station remained open for passenger services until the last scheduled train ran on 21 January 1983. Currently, freight trains go past the station but do not stop.
The Inglewood station was erected in 1877 [2] and included the station building, passenger platform (including a cart approach to platform), 58 ft x 31 ft goods shed, loading bank, two-stall engine shed, stationmaster's house & urinals. The original contract specified a Vogel Class 5 station be built, but as it turned out a class 4 building was constructed. There was also a yard with 3 loops (capacity of 20 wagons, 17 wagons & 17 wagons respectively, plus a 3-wagon back shunt. [3]
No sooner had the station opened than a new contract was let to extend the building, and further work was mentioned in 1880 (for adding a water supply), in 1884 (general improvements), 1896 (to extend the platform and add verandah), 1897 (enlarging and altering station and to add sheep yards) and 1916 (general improvements).[ citation needed ]
The engine shed is not listed in the next review of facilities in 1897 and was likely closed soon after the line was opened to Stratford in 1879.[ citation needed ]
For 23 years from 1878, the station was also home to the Inglewood Post Office. Located in an extension to the northern end of the building, this was initially operated by railways staff before the railway and post office business was separated in 1897. Two years later, the postal department installed a soundproof box for the telephone office, but in 1901 the post office was removed from the station and into a separate building in town. [3]
Inglewood railway station is situated right at the heart of the village, and it wasn't long after the station opened that request for improvements to the general appearance of the railway were lodged. In 1882 requests were made for the planting of willow trees along the railway south of the station, followed in 1889, 1892 and 1894 with requests for permission by the town board to fence and plant the railway reserve.
In August 1924, Inglewood’s war memorial (marble figure of the ‘sorrowing soldier‘) was unveiled in the North-West corner of the railway reserve, along with pre-1850 rhododendron hybrid ‘Sir Robert Peel’ which still stands and is reputed to be one of the largest rhododendrons in the southern hemisphere. In its early years, mixed train services were the norm. Although the line to Inglewood wasn't officially opened until 30 November 1877, advertisements show limited services on Tuesdays and Saturdays running from 4 September 1877. [5] A timetable for 1884 (before the through line to Wanganui was completed) shows morning and afternoon services in each direction, taking a full hour for the journey south to Stratford, and one hour twenty-five minutes northbound to New Plymouth. [6]
From December 1886 the New Plymouth Express was introduced, running the full length of the line to Longburn where passengers changed to trains operated by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company to complete their journey to Wellington. This service was faster than the mixed services, but the initial journey time from New Plymouth to Wellington was still 14 hours 50 minutes. The service became the premier service for the lower North Island, providing connections with steamer boat services to Auckland.
A second passenger-only service through the station was introduced in 1926. Called the Taranaki Flyer this service ran between New Plymouth and Wanganui daily. On 3 September 1933 the nighttime New Plymouth Night Express began operating between New Plymouth, Taumaranui and Auckland. Railcars services began running through Inglewood from April 1938 when the RM class Standard railcars began an evening service to Wellington. Eventually these and the newer 88 seater railcars took over all passenger services though Inglewood.
However, from the late 1950's passenger services started reducing. The first to go was the Flyer service to Wanganui, with its final service running on 7 February 1959. From 30 July 1977 all passenger services linking Inglewood with stations south of Stratford ended with the withdrawal of the Blue Streak railcars (the final successor to the New Plymouth Express). Finally, on 21 January 1983, the New Plymouth - Taumaranui carriage train (final daytime successor to the New Plymouth Night Express) was terminated, ending all passenger services to Inglewood. By this time all remaining mixed services had also been withdrawn.
The only services that currently pass through are freight services between New Plymouth and points south (services north via the Stratford–Okahukura Line having ended in November 2009 when that line was mothballed). Inglewood no longer has any freight facilities, and the passing loop (along with the station's semaphore signals) was removed at some point in the 1990s.
Although train services no longer stop at Inglewood railway station, the building and platform survive along with a former goods loading ramp. The station building was given a Category 1 rating by Heritage New Zealand in 2009. [7] Part of the station yard is fenced off and used for parking, while the railway reserve also contains the towns war memorial and a band rotunda.
The Taranaki Flyer was the name given to a passenger train that was operated by the New Zealand Railways Department between Whanganui and New Plymouth from 1926 to 1965.
The Stratford–Okahukura Line (SOL) is a secondary railway line in the North Island of New Zealand, between the Marton - New Plymouth Line (MNPL) and the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) Railway, with 15 intermediate stations. It is 144 km (89 mi) long through difficult country, with 24 tunnels, 91 bridges and a number of sections of 1 in 50 grade. Near Okahukura there is an unusual combined road-rail bridge over the Ongarue River, with the one-lane road carriageway below the single rail track. The line is not currently in service for rail traffic and is under a 30-year lease for a tourist venture. In July 2019 KiwiRail's CEO stated that reopening the line was a priority. Minister of Transport Michael Wood announced the government's 10-year plan for rail investment on 6 May 2021, which specifically stated that plans could include re-opening the Stratford to Okahukura line.
Masterton railway station is a single-platform, urban railway station serving the town of Masterton in New Zealand's Wairarapa district. Located at the end of Perry Street, it is one of three stations in Masterton, the others being Renall Street and Solway. Masterton station is the terminus for Wairarapa Connection passenger services on Metlink's Wairarapa Line from and to Wellington. The average journey time to Wellington is one hour and forty-three minutes.
The Marton–New Plymouth line (MNPL) is a secondary railway in the North Island of New Zealand that links the Taranaki and Manawatū-Whanganui regions. It branches from the North Island Main Trunk railway (NIMT) at Marton and runs near the South Taranaki Bight of the west coast before turning inland, meeting the Stratford–Okahukura Line (SOL) at Stratford and running to New Plymouth. Construction of the line was completed in 1885, and along with the SOL it provided an alternate route to the NIMT with the SOL's completion in 1933 until the latter was mothballed in 2010. In its early days, the North Island's first regional express, the New Plymouth Express ran on the line, but it has been freight-only since the cancellation of passenger services on the line in 1977.
The Wanganui Branch is a 5.00 km branch line railway in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand's North Island. It links Wanganui with the Marton - New Plymouth Line (MNPL) at Aramoho and has been open since 21 January 1878, although solely for freight traffic since 7 September 1959. Another branch line diverged from the Wanganui Branch near its terminus, the Castlecliff Branch.
The Castlecliff Branch is a branch line railway 5.88 km long in the Manawatu-Whanganui region of New Zealand's North Island. It is an extension of the Wanganui Branch from Taupo Quay in central Whanganui and follows the Whanganui River to Castlecliff on the South Taranaki Bight of the Tasman Sea. From its opening on 31 October 1885 until 1 February 1956 when the NZR took over, it was owned by the Wanganui Heads Railway Company, later renamed the Castlecliff Railway Company. From 5 September 2006 services on the branch were suspended but the infrastructure remained in place. In 2011 KiwiRail resumed services on part of the line.
Pahiatua railway station is on the Wairarapa Line in New Zealand's North Island. It was opened in May 1897, shortly before the line was opened to Woodville in December of that year. The station is located in Mangamutu, 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi) west of Pahiatua, in contrast to the original plans for the railway line to run through the town.
The Waitara Branch is a 7.245 km long branch line railway in the Taranaki region of New Zealand's North Island. It was built as part of the region's first railway, linking New Plymouth with the closest suitable port, then the river port of Waitara. In 1884 the Breakwater port was opened in New Plymouth, but the line was saved when a (meat) freezing works was opened at Waitara in 1885.
Mangamahoe railway station served the small rural community of Mangamahoe in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand’s North Island. It was located on the Wairarapa Line between the stations of Mauriceville and Eketahuna with vehicular access from Station Road. It is the northernmost station site on the Wairarapa Line within the jurisdiction of the Greater Wellington Regional Council before the line passes into territory governed by Horizons Regional Council.
Mauriceville railway station was a rural railway station that served the small village of Mauriceville in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand’s North Island. It was located on the Wairarapa Line between the stations of Kopuaranga and Mangamahoe with direct vehicular access from Opaki Kaiparoro Road.
Eketahuna railway station was a station on the Wairarapa Line, a railway line that runs through the Wairarapa region of New Zealand's North Island. Located between the stations of Mangamahoe and Newman, it served the small southern Tararua town of Eketāhuna and was one of the few attended stations on the northern section of the line.
The Kapuni Branch, formerly known as the Opunake Branch, is a branch railway in North Island, New Zealand. It opened in 1926, and ran 36.4 km across the southern slopes of Mount Taranaki to link the rural town of Ōpunake with the Marton–New Plymouth Line 2 km north of the small rural settlement of Te Roti, equidistant between Eltham and Hāwera. With the decline of rural freight, part of the line was closed in 1976, but the 10.9 km section to Kapuni was retained and upgraded to service traffic to the Kapuni natural gas field.
Kopuaranga railway station was a flag station that served the small rural settlement of Kōpuaranga, 12½ km north of Masterton, in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand’s North Island. It was located on the Wairarapa Line between the stations of Opaki and Mauriceville. From its opening in 1886 it handled both passenger and freight traffic for 97 years until closure in 1983.
Marton railway station was a station and rail junction on the Marton–New Plymouth Line, opened on 4 February 1878. After the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) made a junction to the south of Marton, a new station was built there and the old station renamed and downgraded, in 1898.

Waiongona railway station was a rural railway station on the Marton - New Plymouth Line serving the small locality of Waiongona in New Zealand's Taranaki district. Located on Mountain Road, the station was relocated from its original site in 1893. The station closed to all traffic in 1958, though freight trains continue to pass through the station site.
Lepperton railway station is a rural railway station on the Marton–New Plymouth line serving the village of Lepperton in New Zealand's Taranaki district. It is also the junction with the 7.25-kilometre (4.50 mi) Waitara Branch railway line.
Sentry Hill railway station was a rural railway station on the modern day Waitara Branch railway. It also served as the junction between the New Plymouth - Waitara railway and the main line south until the junction was relocated to Lepperton in 1908.
Waitara Road railway station is a rural railway station on the modern day Waitara Branch railway serving the small locality of Brixton in New Zealand's Taranaki district. It previously served the Waitara Taranaki Co-operative Dairy Company and plant nurseries Duncan and Davies Ltd.
