The Judo competition at the 1980 Summer Olympics was the first time that the medal count was not dominated by Japan, since the country joined the boycott of the games because of the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Medals were awarded to male judoka in eight competitions, seven weight classes and the open competition — two more than in 1976. All events were held at the Palace of Sports of the Central Lenin Stadium at Luzhniki. The schedule started on July 27 and ended on August 2.

Robert Van de Walle is a retired Belgian judoka. He was the first judoka to ever compete at five Olympics, from 1976 to 1992. Competing in the half-heavyweight category he won the gold medal in 1980 and a bronze in 1988 at the age of 34. Van de Walle won European titles in 1980, 1985 and 1986. Together with Ingrid Berghmans he was the face of Belgian judo in the late 1970s and 1980s. After retiring from competitions he ran a coaching company together with his wife. He was the head of the Belgian delegation at the 2004 Summer Olympics. In summer 2021, 14 years after obtaining the rank of black belt 8th dan; Van De Walle, currently a member of Judo Club Crossing Schaerbeek, accepted his promotion to 9th dan from the International Judo Federation.
Shay-Oren Smadja is a former Israeli judoka and a judo coach. Smadja won the Olympic bronze medal in judo at the 1992 Summer Olympics, making him the first Israeli man to win an Olympic medal, and the second Israeli overall after Yael Arad won silver in judo the day before.
Ilias Iliadis is a Georgian-born Greek judoka. He was named the 2014 Greek Male Athlete of the Year.
Michel de Sousa Fernandes Alcobia de Almeida is a Portuguese judoka. He competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Josef "Pepi" Reiter is a retired judoka from Austria, who represented his native country at three consecutive Summer Olympics. He is a seventh degree black belt.
Jean-Luc Rougé is a French judoka. He competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics and the 1980 Summer Olympics.
Rafael Carlos da Silva is a Brazilian heavyweight judoka. He became Brazil's first Olympic medalist in the judo heavyweight division (>100 kg), winning a bronze medal in 2012. Silva won the Pan American Judo Championships in 2012–2014 and 2016, and qualified for the 2016 Olympics.
Lasha Shavdatuashvili is a Georgian judoka. Shavdatuashvili is one of the most successful judoka of the early 21st century, having won Olympic medals at the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics as well as a dozen medals on the IJF World Tour.
Linouse Desravine is a Haitian judoka who competes in the women's 52 kg category. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she was Haiti's flag bearer, but she was defeated in the first round of her event.
Corina Căprioriu is a Romanian judoka. She has competed under the name Corina Ștefan since her 2016 marriage to Romanian wrestler Gheorghiță Ștefan.
Automne Pavia is a French judoka. In 2012, she won bronze at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the class –57 kg.
Sergiu Toma is a Moldovan-born Emirati judoka. He competed for the United Arab Emirates in the 81 kg category at the 2016 Olympic Games and defeated Takanori Nagase to enter the semi-finals. He lost his semi-final match to Khasan Khalmurzaev, but then beat Matteo Marconcini in the bronze medal match. At the 2008 and 2012 Olympics he competed for Moldova but was eliminated in the early rounds.
Or "Ori" Sasson is a retired Israeli Olympic judoka. He won a bronze medal in the +100 kg category at the 2016 Summer Olympics and another one at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He is the second of two Israelis to win two Olympic medals.
Kyle Reyes is a Canadian judoka who competes in the men's 100 kg category. Reyes was born in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
Barbara Matić is a Croatian judoka. She is a two-time world champion in the women's 70 kg event. She is also a two-time junior champion in the women's 70 kg division, Matić won a bronze medal at the 2014 European Judo Championships. Her younger sister Brigita Matić has also been a successful judoka on junior level.
Odette Giuffrida is an Italian judoka. She competed at the 2015 World Judo Championships, where she placed fifth in the women's 52 kg.
Krisztián Tóth is a Hungarian judoka. He won one of the bronze medals in the men's 90 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
