Innanetape (stylized as INNANETAPE) is the debut mixtape by American rapper Vic Mensa. It was released on September 30, 2013, as a free digital download. The mixtape features guest appearances from Chance the Rapper, Ab-Soul, Rockie Fresh and BJ the Chicago Kid, as well as the production that was provided by Boi-1da, Hit-Boy, Cam for J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Tae Beast, DJ Dahi, Om'Mas Keith, Christian Rich and Mensa himself.

Background

Vic Mensa told MTV; the inspiration for the mixtape came from him "tweakin' one night with a lot of friends at his homegirl's house." The following day he began recording material for mixtape, already had chosen the title Innanetape. [3] The title is a combination of the words "internet" and "mixtape". [4]

On August 30, 2013, Vic Mensa released a trailer for the mixtape parodying the beating of fellow Chicago rapper DJ Nate, who got robbed earlier in 2013. [5] The video also revealed a September 30, 2013 release date for the mixtape. [6] The mixtape featured guest appearances by Chance the Rapper, Ab-Soul, Rockie Fresh and BJ The Chicago Kid, along with production from Boi-1da, Hit-Boy, Tae Beast, DJ Dahi, The Maven Boys, Cam of J.U.S.T.I.C.E. Christian Mordi of XXL gave the mixtape a "XL" rating, stating "Mensa provides lyrical nourishment throughout Innanetape. Mensa showcases his ability to stand alone and make strong songs early in the tape with the playful “Orange Soda” and soulful “Lovely Day.” Vic doesn't get lost in the mix when sparring with rising stars in the game like TDE's Ab-Soul or MMG’s Rockie Fresh. In regards to flow, Vic shows a keen ability to bend words at will, cramming syllables into lines with obvious glee." [13] Steven Goldstein of HipHopDX deemed the mixtape a "free album", saying "There’s no ceiling on Vic Mensa’s crossover ability. Those who log on to his INNANET in search of diversion and socializing will be satisfied with the free form lyricism and upbeat tempo of the project’s first half, and those looking for something that runs deeper than the established culture will be thrilled with the latter half." Cowie of Exclaim! said, "On the evidence of Innanetape, Mensa (aka Yung Netscape) defies the defunct nature of his alter ego and is definitely still around for a reason, poised to realize his potential." Year-end lists

Complex ranked the mixtape at number 34, on their list of the 50 best albums of 2013. They commented saying, "INNANETAPE displays Vic's talent in its fullest fruition yet. As a rapper, Vic is physical, contorting words and playing with sounds. He bends the meter of songs in unexpected ways and dances freely between rapping and singing his lyrics. He's fun to listen to, his writing is dizzyingly dense and consistently interesting. But INNANETAPE is more than a show of great rapping—it's also an ambitious, musically omnivorous project that demonstrates Vic is an artist with a broad vision and a strong sense for building songs." [14] Rolling Stone named it the seventh best mixtape of 2013. They elaborated saying, "Though he and Chance share a delirious flow and a keen eye for both self and society, Mensa's Innanetape is a bright blast of summertime sunshine highlighted by paeans to orange soda ("Orange Soda"), drugs ("Tweakin"), and, well, life ("Lovely Day"). [15] XXL named it the eighth best mixtape of 2013. They commented saying, "Vic Mensa proves that he can standout with INNANETAPE. [...] The once frontman for popular band Kids These Days, he turns solo and puts out an impressive tape reflecting his experiences and observations of the turmoil in the Windy City. He displays great voice control, lyrical prowess and song-making ability throughout the record." [16]

Coleman re-signed to the label in February 2012, although he departed once more in March 2014. His debut studio album, God, Money, War (2015) was released through RCA Records and entered the Billboard 200; Puff Daddy executive produced the album.

The album features guest appearances from Mobb Deep, Erykah Badu, Jim Jones, Jadakiss, Remy Ma, Mavado, DJ Premier and Ron Browz among others. The album was supported by the three singles "On Top of My Game" featuring Mavado, "What's My Name" featuring Remy Ma, and "Get At Me" featuring Ron Browz. Upon release the album received generally positive reviews and debuted at number 97 on the U.S. Billboard 200.

Summer Knights is the second mixtape by American rapper Joey Bada$$. It was released on July 1, 2013, by Cinematic Music Group. The mixtape was planned to be released as an EP, to prelude the release of his debut album B4.DA.$$, but instead it was announced to be a full-length mixtape. The mixtape features production from Chuck Strangers, Kirk Knight, MF Doom, Statik Selektah, DJ Premier, Lee Bannon, Oddisee, Navie D, and Bruce Leekix. The mixtape features more original instrumentals than his first mixtape 1999 which was primarily samples.

Digi+Phonics is an African American hip hop production team, composed of California-based record producers Tae Beast, Sounwave, Dave Free and Willie B. They currently serve as the main in-house producers for Carson-based record label, Top Dawg Entertainment. Digi+Phonics work significantly on projects from all the members of hip hop supergroup Black Hippy, who are also signed to Top Dawg and is composed of rappers Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul. Their best known productions include "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" by Kendrick Lamar, "There He Go" by Schoolboy Q, and "Terrorist Threats" by Ab-Soul. The Maven Boys are a songwriting-production duo from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, consisting of Zale "Zalezy" Epstein and Brett Ryan Kruger. In 2012, they were featured on Complex Magazine's 25 New Producers To Watch Out For list. The Maven Boys have co-produced alongside Eminem and Boi-1da. They have worked with many notable artists including Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz, and Childish Gambino.

Christian Walcott Webster, better known by his stage name Chris Webby, is an American rapper from Norwalk, Connecticut. Chris Webby has released many mixtapes such as the DJ Drama-hosted Bars On Me (2012) and his EP There Goes the Neighborhood (2011), which peaked at number 101 on the Billboard 200. He has worked with various artists such as Freeway, Mac Miller, Joell Ortiz, Big K.R.I.T., Method Man, Apathy, Prodigy, Bun B, Tech N9ne, Jarren Benton, and Kid Ink. In 2013 he and his label, Homegrown Music, signed a deal with E1 Music. He then released Homegrown, another EP, in November 2012. Webster released his debut studio album Chemically Imbalanced on October 27, 2014.

Stolen Youth is a collaborative mixtape by American rapper Vince Staples and rapper/producer Mac Miller, under his production pseudonym Larry Fisherman. The mixtape was released as a free digital download on June 20, 2013, to mixtape hosting websites. Stolen Youth was entirely produced by Miller. The mixtape features guest appearances from Mac Miller, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Da$H, Hardo, and Staples' Cutthroat Boyz cohort, Joey Fatts.
