Intelligent Creatures (IC) is a motion picture visual effects company located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

History

IC was founded on March 30, 2001 by current CEO Lon Molnar, a graduate of the Vancouver Film School, Michael Hatton, Raymond Gieringer, and Wendy Lanning, and commenced production in 2002. The company was created in response to the demands of the visual effects industry, at a time when there was a shortage of visual effects vendors in Toronto.

Location

IC's studio is located in the east end of Toronto, in close proximity to Pinewood Toronto Studios and Cinespace Film Studios. A satellite office is located in North Bay, Ontario.

Projects

IC has worked with film studios such as Warner Bros., Walt Disney Pictures, Columbia Pictures, New Line Cinema, Paramount, and 20th Century Studios.

The company has worked on films such as Zack Snyder's Watchmen (for which it designed Dave Gibbon's character Rorschach), Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, and Alejandro González Iñárritu's Babel, Stranger than Fiction, Battle: Los Angeles, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Titles currently in production include Omega, Orphan Black, Transporter: The Series and The Last Druid: Garm Wars.

IC has received a nomination for Best Visual Effects in a Broadcast Program from the Visual Effects Society for its work on Secret Universe: Journey Inside the Cell / Battlefield Cell (one part of the Discovery Channel's Curiosity).

Industrial Light & Magic American visual effects studio

Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) is an American motion picture visual effects company that was founded in May 1975 by George Lucas. It is a division of the film production company Lucasfilm, which Lucas founded, and was created when Lucas began production of the film Star Wars.

Visual effects is the process by which imagery is created or manipulated outside the context of a live action shot in filmmaking and video production. The integration of live action footage and other live action footage or CG elements to create realistic imagery is called VFX.

A production company, production house, production studio, or a production team is a business that provides the physical basis for works in the fields of performing arts, new media art, film, television, radio, comics, interactive arts, video games, websites, music, and video. Production teams consist of technical staff to produce the media. Generally the term refers to all individuals responsible for the technical aspects of creating a particular product, regardless of where in the process their expertise is required, or how long they are involved in the project. For example, in a theatrical performance, the production team has not only the running crew, but also the theatrical producer, designers and theatrical direction.

Pinewood Toronto Studios

Pinewood Toronto Studios is a major film and television studio complex in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is the largest of its kind in Canada. It is the first in Toronto capable of accommodating the production of large-scale films. The studio is named for the British Pinewood Studios Group. In March 2018, it was announced that Bell Media would be buying a controlling stake in the studio.

Jam Filled Entertainment Canadian animation studio

Jam Filled Entertainment is a Canadian animation studio based in Ottawa, Ontario. Jam Filled is a division of Boat Rocker Media and has additional facilities in Toronto and Halifax. It is best known for animating the Nickelodeon series The Loud House, and for animating Thomas & Friends between 2013 and 2020.

Cafe FX

CafeFX was an award-winning feature film visual effects facility offering visual effects production and supervision, CG character creation, and 3D animation. Founded in 1993 by Jeff Barnes and David Ebner, CafeFX was located in a 36,000-square-foot (3,300 m2) studio on an eight-acre campus in Santa Maria in Santa Barbara County. Its commercial and music video division, Santa Monica-based The Syndicate, was a creative design, branding services, and digital production studio, specializing in live action direction, visual effects, animation, motion graphics, and telecine. CafeFX and The Syndicate were held by umbrella corporation ComputerCafe Group, which has also established Sententia Entertainment, a long form production company.

Pixar Canada was a short lived wholly owned subsidiary of Pixar Animation Studios. It was located in Vancouver, British Columbia. The studio was tasked to produce short films based on Pixar’s feature film characters.
