"Intention" is a song by Bulgarian progressive rock supergroup Intelligent Music Project. The song represented Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 after being internally selected by BNT,Bulgaria's broadcaster for the Eurovision Song Contest. [1]
According to the band,the song is about confronting the challenges of life. The first verse talks about a troubled youth with trauma. However,during the pre-chorus,the person eventually comes to terms with their past,eventually having a feeling of strength of having overcome much adversity during the chorus. In the second verse,the song's lyrics become more positive,and the message of the power of intentions is carried through the verse. The song ends with the message that to escape the demons of the past,it is important to look towards the future. [2]
In mid-September 2021,Intelligent Music Project founder Milen Vrabevski revealed to Radio Plovdiv that they had been selected to represent Bulgaria at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. [3] No official confirmation came until 25 November,when BNT announced the group as their representative for 2022 with the song "Intention". [4]
According to Eurovision rules,all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the "Big Five" (France,Germany,Italy,Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final;the top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the final. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) split up the competing countries into six different pots based on voting patterns from previous contests,with countries with favourable voting histories put into the same pot. On 25 January 2022,an allocation draw was held which placed each country into one of the two semi-finals,as well as which half of the show they would perform in. Bulgaria was placed into the first semi-final,held on 10 May 2022,and performed in the first half of the show. [5]
Poli Plamenova Genova is a Bulgarian singer,songwriter,actress,and television presenter. Genova began her career in 1995,at the age of eight,as a member of the Bulgarian children's ensemble Bon-Bon.
Bulgaria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "If Love Was a Crime" written by Borislav Milanov,Sebastian Arman,Joacim Bo Persson and Poli Genova. The song was performed by Poli Genova,who had previously represented Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 where she failed to qualify to the final with the song "Na inat". In November 2015,the Bulgarian broadcaster Bulgarian National Television (BNT) announced that they would be returning to the Eurovision Song Contest after a two-year absence following their withdrawal in 2014 due to financial limitations. On 19 February 2016,the broadcaster announced that Poli Genova had been selected to compete at the 2016 contest in Stockholm,Sweden. The song that Genova competed with,"If Love Was a Crime",was also internally selected and was presented to the public on 21 March 2016.
"If Love Was a Crime" is a song recorded by Bulgarian recording artist Poli Genova. Written by Borislav Milanov,Sebastian Arman,Joacim Bo Persson,Johnny K. Palmer and Genova,the track represented Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. As a result,it came in fourth place in the final,with it becoming the highest placing in the contest for Bulgaria. An accompanying music video for "If Love Was a Crime" was released on 21 March 2016,followed by the launching of the single on 30 March 2016 through the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and Universal. Upon its appearance in the contest,the recording charted at number 200 on the UK Singles Chart and peaked within the top eighty in Austria,Belgium,Scotland and Sweden.
Cyprus participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "Gravity" written by Thomas G:son. The song was performed by Hovig,who was selected by the Cypriot broadcaster Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) in October 2016 to represent Cyprus at the 2017 contest in Kyiv,Ukraine. On 13 March 2017,the Bulgarian broadcaster Bulgarian National Television (BNT) announced that Kristian Kostov had been internally selected to compete at the 2017 contest in Kyiv,Ukraine. The song that Kostov competed with,"Beautiful Mess",was also internally selected and was presented to the public later the same day.
Bulgaria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. Equinox were internally selected by the Bulgarian broadcaster Bulgarian National Television (BNT) on 12 March 2018 to perform the song "Bones" that represented the nation at the 2018 contest in Lisbon,Portugal.
Cyprus planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020,which was to be held in Rotterdam,Netherlands. Greek-American-German singer Sandro was selected by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) to represent the country with the song "Running",written Sandro,Alfie Arcuri,Sebastian Rickards,Octavian Rasinariu,and Teo DK. To promote the entry,a music video was released and Sandro appeared at Sweden's selection pre-party to perform it live. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,the contest was cancelled in mid-March.
Bulgaria originally planned participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song "Tears Getting Sober" written by Victoria Georgieva,Borislav Milanov,Lukas Oscar Janisch and Cornelia Wiebols,and performed by Victoria. However,the contest was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was planned to represent Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam,the Netherlands,after being selected by the national broadcaster Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation. However,the contest was later cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Alcohol You" is a song recorded by Romanian singer Roxen,digitally released on 21 February 2020 by Global Records. It was written by IonuțArmașand Breyan Isaac,while Viky Red solely handed its production. "Alcohol You" emerged as the winner of Selecția Națională2020 and was thus scheduled to represent Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 before the event's cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China and its spread to other countries. Roxen had previously been internally selected at the country's representative by Romanian Television (TVR).
"Voda" is a song recorded by Slovenian singer Ana Soklič. Sokličwrote lyrics,while also composing the music alongside Bojan Simončič. It would have represented Slovenia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam,Netherlands prior to its cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Iceland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam,Netherlands. Icelandic broadcaster Ríkisútvarpið (RÚV) chose Daði og Gagnamagniðto represent the nation with the song "10 Years",written by Daði Freyr Pétursson. Daði og Gagnamagnið were due to compete in the 2020 contest with "Think About Things" before the event's eventual cancellation,having won the 2020 edition of Iceland's national selection Söngvakeppnin. For the 2021 contest,RÚV decided to continue its association with Daði og Gagnamagnið,with the group's 2021 entry being selected internally,and as such,no edition of Söngvakeppnin was organised for 2021.

A total of 46 entries were selected and 10 qualifiers ultimately competed in the final on 5 March 2022,where the winner scoring top marks from both a jury panel and a public televote was selected.
