Malik Justin Harris [1] (born 27 August 1997) is a German singer, songwriter and rapper. He is the first ever German-American artist to spend a week on a Times Square billboard in New York City [2] in 2020. He represented Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 with the song "Rockstars" and finished in last place with 6 points before the song was certified Gold in Germany in 2023. [2] [3] [4]

Early life

Harris was born in Landsberg am Lech on 27 August 1997. His father is Ricky Harris, a Germany-based American television presenter and actor from Detroit. [5] At the age of 13, Harris got into music by making covers of songs with his guitar. [6]

Career

2022: Eurovision Song Contest 2022

Harris took part in the contest Germany 12 Points to become Germany's representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Harris made it to the final casting round held in Berlin in January 2022 and was announced as one of six finalists on 10 February 2022. [7]

The televised final took place on 4 March 2022. The winner was selected through public voting, including options for landline, SMS and online voting. For the online vote, users were able to vote via the official websites of the nine ARD radio channels between 28 February 2022 and 4 March 2022. [8] Harris won the final by a 23 points margin. At the grand final of Eurovision, he finished in last place with 6 points, second worst result after 2015. [9]

The Eurovision Song Contest 1984 was the 29th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, held on 5 May 1984 in the Théâtre Municipal in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. Germany has officially participated in every Eurovision Song Contest since its inaugural edition in 1956, except in 1996 when its entry did not qualify past the audio-only pre-selection round, and consequently was not seen in the broadcast final and does not count as one of Germany's 67 appearances. No other country has been represented as many times. Along with France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, Germany is one of the "Big Five" countries that are automatically prequalified for the final, due to their participant broadcasters being the largest financial contributors to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The final is broadcast in Germany on ARD's flagship channel, Das Erste.

Germany was represented at the qualifying round for the Eurovision Song Contest 1996 with the song "Planet of Blue", written by Hanne Haller and Anna Rubach, and performed by Leon. The German participating broadcaster on behalf of ARD, Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), organised the national final Ein bisschen Glück in order to select their entry for the contest. The entry failed to make it through the pre-selection round, meaning Germany was not represented at the Eurovision Song Contest for the first and only time.

Germany participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 with the song "Zeit" written by Ralph Siegel and Bernd Meinunger. The song was performed by Bianca Shomburg. The German entry for the 1997 contest in Dublin, Ireland was selected through the national final Der Countdown läuft, organised by the German broadcaster ARD in collaboration with Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). The national final took place on 27 February 1997 and featured nine competing acts with the winner being selected through public televoting. The Eurovision Song Contest 2022 was the 66th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Turin, Italy, following the country's victory at the 2021 contest with the song "Zitti e buoni" by Måneskin. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Radiotelevisione italiana (RAI), the contest was held at the PalaOlimpico, and consisted of two semi-finals on 10 and 12 May, and a final on 14 May 2022. Germany was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with the song "Always on the Run", written by Greg Taro, Isaak Guderian, Kevin Lehr, and Leo Salminen, and performed by Isaak himself. The German participating broadcaster on behalf of ARD, Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), organised the national final Eurovision Song Contest –Das deutsche Finale2024 in order to select their entry for the contest.

It was written by Isaak, Kevin Lehr, Leo Jupiter, and Greg Taro, and jointly released on 19 January 2024 between Good Kid Records and Polydor Records. "Always on the Run" represented Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where it finished in 12th place with 117 points.
