"Tears Getting Sober" is a song recorded by Bulgarian singer and songwriter Victoria. The song was composed and written by the aforementioned artist together with Borislav Milanov, Cornelia Wiebols and Lukas Oscar Janisch.

The song was scheduled to represent Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, after being internally selected by the national broadcaster Bulgarian National Television. [1] However, the contest was later cancelled due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. [2] After the song was released, the song led the betting odds of winning the contest until the cancellation. [3] [4]

Background

"Tears Getting Sober" was entirely composed and written by Victoria herself, alongside Borislav Milanov, Cornelia Wiebols and Lukas Oscar Janisch. [5] The song is inspired by Milanov's experiences while holding a songwriting camp, where this song was eventually written. It concerns mental health issues and motivate people to fight through their problems, even if they have to do it all by themselves. [6] [7]

The song was scheduled to represent for Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, after Victoria was internally selected by the national broadcaster, Bulgarian National Television (BNT). On 28 January 2020, a special allocation draw was held which placed each country into one of the two semi-finals, as well as which half of the show they would perform in. Bulgaria was placed into the second semi-final, to be held on 14 May 2020, and was scheduled to perform in the second half of the show.

In March 2020, the European Broadcasting Union cancelled the contest due to the pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in China and its spread to other countries. [2] Soon after, it was announced that Victoria will represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. [8]

"If Love Was a Crime" is a song recorded by Bulgarian recording artist Poli Genova. Written by Borislav Milanov, Sebastian Arman, Joacim Bo Persson, Johnny K. Palmer and Genova, the track represented Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. As a result, it came in fourth place in the final, with it becoming the highest placing in the contest for Bulgaria. An accompanying music video for "If Love Was a Crime" was released on 21 March 2016, followed by the launching of the single on 30 March 2016 through the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and Universal. Upon its appearance in the contest, the recording charted at number 200 on the UK Singles Chart and peaked within the top eighty in Austria, Belgium, Scotland and Sweden.

Bulgaria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "Beautiful Mess" written by Borislav Milanov, Sebastian Arman, Joacim Bo Persson, Alex Omar and Alexander V. Blay. The song was performed by Russian-Bulgarian singer Kristian Kostov. On 13 March 2017, the Bulgarian broadcaster Bulgarian National Television (BNT) announced that Kristian Kostov had been internally selected to compete at the 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. The song that Kostov competed with, "Beautiful Mess", was also internally selected and was presented to the public later the same day.

Eurovision Song Contest 2020 Cancelled Eurovision Song Contest

The Eurovision Song Contest 2020 was planned to be the 65th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It would have taken place in Rotterdam, Netherlands, following the country's victory at the 2019 contest with the song "Arcade" by Duncan Laurence. The contest was cancelled on 18 March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the first time in the contest's 64-year old history that an edition was not held. Rotterdam instead hosted the 2021 contest on 18, 20 and 22 May 2021; however, the songs selected for the 2020 contest were not eligible for the competition.

San Marino planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, which was scheduled to be held in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Italian singer Senhit was chosen to represent the nation with her song "Freaky!". Sammarinese broadcaster San Marino RTV (SMRTV) internally selected the singer, while her song was selected through a national final entitled Digital Battle. Senhit previously represented San Marino in the 2011 contest, but failed to qualify for the grand final. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe during 2020, the Eurovision Song Contest was cancelled in mid-March 2020. "Freaky!" was subsequently an entry for several replacement events including Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light, Der kleine Song Contest and Sveriges 12:a. Senhit announced during the former of the three that she would return to represent the nation at the 2021 contest the following year.

Malta originally planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song "All of My Love" written by Bernarda Brunović, Borislav Milanov, Sebastian Arman, Dag Lundberg, Joacim Persson and Cesár Sampson. The song was performed by Destiny Chukunyere, who had previously represented Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in the 2015 edition where she achieved first place with the song "Not My Soul". The Maltese entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, was selected through the second season of the music competition X Factor Malta, organised by the Maltese broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services (PBS). Borislav Georgiev Milanov is a Bulgarian music composer, songwriter and record producer known for his work on the Eurovision Song Contest. He has collaborated with Alexandra Stan. Milanov is a co-producer of the Bulgarian Eurovision participation in 2017, 2018 and 2020 and the creator of Equinox. He is the founder of the label “Symphonix International”, headquartered in Vienna, Austria.

Bulgaria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, having internally selected Victoria Georgieva as their representative with the song "Growing Up Is Getting Old". She was due to compete in the 2020 contest with "Tears Getting Sober" before the event's cancellation.

San Marino participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The Sammarinese broadcaster San Marino RTV (SMRTV) internally selected Senhit as their representative with the song "Adrenalina" featuring Flo Rida. Senhit was due to compete in the 2020 contest with "Freaky!" before the event's eventual cancellation and had also served as the nation's 2011 entrant. "Adrenalina" was written and composed by Thomas Stengaard, Joy Deb, Linnea Deb, Jimmy Thörnfeldt, Kenny Silverdique, Suzi Pancenkov, Malou Linn Eloise Ruotsalainen and Chanel Tukia, along with Senhit and Flo Rida themselves. While Flo Rida had provided vocals for the track from its inception, his participation in the performance of the entry on the Eurovision stage was only confirmed on the day of the second semi-final due to travel restrictions related to COVID-19.

The song represented Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The song appears on her debut extended play A Little Dramatic.

Bulgaria is set to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy. On 25 November 2021, the Bulgarian broadcaster BNT announced that the supergroup Intelligent Music Project had been internally selected to compete at the contest with the song "Intention", which was presented to the public on 5 December.
