VAL is a Belarusian band comprising Valeria Gribusova and Vladislav Pashkevich.

History

In 2016, together with keyboardist and sound producer, Pashkevich, Gribusova founded a solo project called "VAL Music Project" which released the singles "Кто ты есть" (Who Are You) and "Ветер во сне" (Wind in a Dream) the same year. [1]

VAL would have represented Belarus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam with the song "Da vidna", after winning Belarus' national selection Natsionalniy Otbor 2020 on 28 February 2020; [2] [3] although it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pair openly supported the 2020 Belarusian protests. [4] Because of that, in September 2020, the Belarusian state broadcaster said the duo was no longer willing to represent Belarus in the Eurovision Song Contest. [5]

Valeria Gribusova (Belarusian : Валерыя Грыбусава, romanized: Valieryja Hrybusava; Mogilev, 12 February 1995) delivers most of the vocals for the duo and is a songwriter and a dancer.

Gribusova participated in Ludmila Zukova's children's ensemble Yaritsa from the age of five. She later attended the Mogilev Gymnasium where she matriculated with honours in choral music and art in 2013. She went on to study in the Pop Art department of the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts. [6] Gribusova worked as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Belarus under Mikhail Finberg in 2015.

Gribusova has won numerous accolades as a singer. In 2015, when just 20 years old, she won first prize in the Belarus Slavianski Bazaar Competition. [7] [8] In 2017, she participated in the Ukrainian version of The Voice , joining Jamala's team. [9]

Vladislav Pashkevich

Vladislav Pashkevich (Belarusian : Уладзіслаў Пашкевіч, romanized: Uladzislaŭ Paškievič) – alias Vlad Freimann (Влад Фрайманн) – is a music producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and linguist. Pashkevich graduated at the Minsk State Linguistic University, [10] and speaks four languages fluently: German, English, Russian and Belarusian. [11] Pashkevich is of Jewish descent through his paternal grandfather Ernest Yefimovich Freimann. [12]

Pashkevich is one half of the producing duo ToneTwins. [13] Pashkevich was one of the backing singers for Naviband at the Belarusian national selection in 2017, but was not selected to be the group's backing singer at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv. [14]

Belarus is an Eastern European country with a rich tradition of folk and religious music. The country's folk music traditions can be traced back to the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The country's musical traditions spread with its people to countries like Russia, Canada, United States, Kazakhstan and Latvia. The people of Belarus were exposed mostly to Russian pop music during this period and also after independence in 1991. Belarus has participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in every edition since its inception in 2003 until 2020. The Belarusian Television and Radio Company (BTRC), then a member organisation of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), has been responsible for the selection process of its participants since its debut. The country hosted the contest at the Minsk-Arena in 2010 and again in 2018.

Zinaida Alexandrovna Kupriyanovich, sometimes known professionally as Zina Kupriyanovich or Zena, and now known as Zina Bless, is a Belarusian singer, actress, and television presenter. Kupriyanovich represented Belarus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the song "Like It", placing 24th in the final. She has additionally cohosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Minsk, and voiced the Russian dub of the eponymous character in the film Moana (2016).

Belarus originally planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song "Da vidna" written by Uladzislaŭ Paškievič, Valeryja Hrybusava and Mikita Najdzionaŭ. The song was performed by the band VAL. The Belarusian entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, Netherlands was selected through the national final Natsionalny Otbor, which was organised by the Belarusian broadcaster National State Television and Radio Company of the Republic of Belarus (BTRC). The national final consisted of twelve competing acts participating in a televised production where "Da vidna" performed by VAL was selected as the winner following the combination of votes from a jury panel and public televoting.

"Da vidna" is a song performed by Belarusian band VAL.

Belarus had originally planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. They internally selected Galasy ZMesta as their representative, initially with the song "Ya nauchu tebya ", but the entry was deemed ineligible to compete by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) due to violation of the contest's rules against political entries. After their replacement entry "Pesnyu pro zaytsa " was also deemed ineligible, Belarus was disqualified from the contest on 26 March 2021. This was the first time Belarus was absent from the contest since the country's debut in 2004. Belarus was originally set to compete in the first half of the first semi-final on 18 May 2021.

Galasy ZMesta is a Belarusian band that was formed in 2020 in the city of Baranavichy, Belarus.

"Ya nauchu tebya (I'll Teach You)" (Russian: Я научу тебя) is a song by Belarusian band Galasy ZMesta. The song was selected by the Belarusian national broadcaster BTRC to represent Belarus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, but was rejected by the competition's organisers for having content which they believed was too political in nature. The music video was also taken down from the official Eurovision site.
