The Inter-California Railway, known in Spanish as the Ferrocarril Inter-California, also known as the Inter-Cal, is a former railroad line which connected the Californias by train. It operated between the American state of California and the Mexican state of Baja California.
The Inter-California Railway was incorporated on 15 June 1904, as a subsidiary of Southern Pacific Railroads. [1] [2]
In 1929, the Mexicali and Gulf Railway was reorganized as the southern line of Inter-Cal.
Inter-Cal's lines in Mexico became the Ferrocarril Sonora-Baja California in 1960.
Souther Pacific was later acquired by Union Pacific. Inter-Cal's line from Niland to Calexico remains in operation as UP's Calexico Subdivision, interchanging with Ferromex at the US-Mexico borer.
The Inter-California Railway's northern terminus was in Niland, California, where the line connected to the Sunset line of Southern Pacific Railroads. [3] The Inter-Cal then continued down through the Imperial Valley, connecting with the San Diego and Arizona Railway in El Centro. At Calexico, California, the Inter-Cal crossed the United States-Mexico border into Mexicali, Baja California. [3] [4] It then continued through the Mexicali Valley, before crossing the border again at Los Algodones, Baja California and finally terminating at Araz Junction in Andrade, California, where the line reconnected to the Sunset line. Calexico is a city in southern Imperial County, California. Situated on the Mexican border, it is linked economically with the much larger city of Mexicali, the capital of the Mexican state of Baja California. It is about 122 miles (196 km) east of San Diego and 62 miles (100 km) west of Yuma, Arizona. Calexico, along with six other incorporated Imperial County cities, forms part of the larger populated area known as the Imperial Valley.

The Imperial Valley of Southern California lies in Imperial and Riverside counties, with an urban area centered on the city of El Centro. The Valley is bordered by the Colorado River to the east and, in part, the Salton Sea to the west. Farther west lies the San Diego and Imperial County border. To the north is the Coachella Valley region of Riverside County, which together with Imperial Valley form the Salton Trough, or the Cahuilla Basin, also the county line of Imperial and Riverside counties, and to the south the international boundary with Mexico.
State Route 111 is a state highway in the U.S. state of California. It is the main north-south route and retail corridor through the Coachella Valley, a part of the Colorado Desert in the southeastern corner of the state and a famous resort destination. It also runs through the Imperial Valley, and along the eastern shore of the Salton Sea. Its southern terminus is at Imperial Avenue and 1st Street in Calexico, at the former entrance to the Calexico West Port of Entry. SR 111's northern terminus is at Interstate 10 at the northwestern corner of the Palm Springs city limits, near the unincorporated community of Whitewater.
The San Diego and Arizona Railway was a 148-mile (238 km) short line U.S. railroad founded by entrepreneur John D. Spreckels, and dubbed "The Impossible Railroad" by engineers of its day due to the immense logistical challenges involved. It linked San Diego, its western terminus, with El Centro, its eastern terminus, where passengers could connect with Southern Pacific's transcontinental lines, eliminating the need to first travel north via Los Angeles or Riverside.
The San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway Company is a short-line American railroad founded in 1932 as the successor to the San Diego and Arizona Railway (SD&A), which was founded in 1906 by entrepreneur John D. Spreckels. Dubbed "The Impossible Railroad" by many engineers of its day due to the immense logistical challenges involved, the line was established in part to provide San Diego with a direct rail link to the east by connecting with the Southern Pacific Railroad lines in El Centro, California. Since 1979, the company has been owned by the San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board and its successor, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System.
The San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad (SD&IV) is a class III railroad operating freight rail service in the San Diego area, providing service to customers in the region and moving railcars between the end of the BNSF Railway in downtown San Diego and the Mexico–United States border in San Ysidro. It was established in October 1984 and is owned and operated by Genesee & Wyoming.
The New River flows north from near Cerro Prieto, through the city of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, into the United States through the city of Calexico, California, towards the Salton Sea. The river channel has existed since pre-historic times. The river as known today formed from a levee failure and massive flooding that filled the Salton Sea.

The Ferrocarril Sonora–Baja California is a former railroad line of Mexico that built the line from Mexicali, Baja California, to Benjamín Hill, Sonora in 1948. It interchanged with the Southern Pacific Railroad at Calexico, California, and with the Ferrocarril del Pacifico in Benjamin Hill, Sonora. Before 1960, The SP-controlled Inter-California railroad provided trackage rights for the SBC from Pascualitos to the International Border. SBC took control of that part after the demise of the Inter-Cal.
Ferrocarril Mexicali y Golfo was a railroad line in Baja California, Mexico, established in 1901. Within a few years a controlling interest in the railroad was bought by the American Southern Pacific Railroad company. The line eventually built was a predecessor to the Ferrocarril Sonora – Baja California. In 1929 the Mexicali y Golfo was reorganized as the southern line of the Inter-California Railway, under the name Ferrocarril Intercalifornia del Sur.

Calexico–Mexicali is a transborder agglomeration in southeastern California and northwestern Baja California with its center being the border between the sister cities of Calexico and Mexicali. The agglomeration lies within a large geologic region known as the Salton Trough with the city of Calexico located in the Imperial Valley on the United States side of the border, and Mexicali located in the Mexicali Valley on the Mexico side of the border.
The Pacific Imperial Railroad was a company in possession of the SD&AE Desert Line right of way in Southern California, colloquially referred to as the Desert Line. The Desert Line starts at the border crossing at Division, near Campo at Milepost 59.94 in eastern San Diego County, California, where it connects with the Baja California Railroad in Mexico, and stretches 70.1 miles through the Jacumba Mountains to El Centro, California, where it connects to Union Pacific Railroad at Milepost 129.61. The significance of the Desert Line is that it provides an alternative rail route to and from the east for servicing the distribution, transportation, and supply chain needs of the Cali-Baja region.
'Batáquez' , 'Estación Batáquez' or 'Ejido Monterrey' , is a locality Mexican of the Valley of Mexicali, in the municipality from Mexicali, Baja California. According to data from INEGI, it is located at coordinates 32 ° 32'58 north latitude and 115 ° 04'15 west longitude and had 1,121 inhabitants in 2010. Despite being a small locality, Batáquez has local importance since it is head of the municipal delegation of the same name.
The Imperial was a night train of the Rock Island Rail Road and the Southern Pacific. It operated from Chicago to Los Angeles, via Kansas City (Missouri) and Tucumcari.
Ciudad Morelos (Cuervos) is a town in the Mexicali Valley, a municipal demarcation that belongs to the municipality of Mexicali, in Baja California, Mexico. Founded on 20 October 1909, it is considered one of the most important communities in the valley, the second most populous, according to the number of inhabitants reported in the 2020 census, which amounted to 9,572 people.
Tecate station was a train station in Tecate, Baja California. The Building has an influence on the architectural style of the first stage of American Frank Lloyd Wright. The station had a waiting room, cellar and office on the ground floor.
