Ion Cernea (born 21 October 1933) is a retired bantamweight Greco-Roman wrestler from Romania. Between 1960 and 1965 he earned two Olympic and two world championship medals, winning the world title in 1965. [2] [3] He retired the same year to become a wrestling coach and international referee, and was present in this capacity at all major international wrestling competitions between 1972 and 1988. [1]

Cernea is married to the singer Irina Loghin; they have a son and a daughter. [4] [5] [6]

In 1984 he served as the flag bearer for Romania at the opening ceremony. In 1975 he set a team world record at 2370 points and in 1977 equaled the individual world record at 598 points.

He won two silver medals for his division at the 2008 European Wrestling Championships in Tampere, Finland, and at the 2010 European Wrestling Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. He is also a member of Dinamo București, and is coached and trained by Carare Petrica.
