The Little Blue River is a 245-mile-long (394 km) river in southern Nebraska and northern Kansas that was used by Pony Express horseback riders. Ridgelines of this historic watershed defined the wagon train routes first used by Oregon Trail emigrants.
The Ionia Volcano is a geological formation located east of Newcastle, Nebraska which, despite it's name, is not a volcano but instead a unique, heat-producing bluff. The site was originally considered sacred by the Ponca Native American Tribe and was documented by William Clark on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The site would periodically erupt and start localize wildfires, often forming fissures in the ground. The heat generated by the bluff was caused by the oxidation of iron pyrite and carbonaceous shale that was exposed to moisture and oxygen due to erosion. In 1878, flooding by the Missouri River resulted in the nearby town of Ionia, its namesake, being abandoned and a large portion of the bluff collapsed. The bluff erupted twice, once in 1879 and again in 1901, with the latter eruption marking the end of its activity.
