Iqra Rasool (born 15 August 2000) is an Indian cricketer and also known as 'Baramulla's supergirl'. [1] She hails from Dangiwacha, Rafiabad located in North Kashmir and represented Jammu and Kashmir at the U-19 and U-23 level. [2]

In 2017, at a session of ‘We The Women’ [3] in Mumbai, Mithali Raj, the captain of the Indian Women's cricket team, presented a ‘H.E.R.’ (Hope. Empower. Rise.) award to Iqra Rasool. H.E.R awards are conferred to those who have "shown remarkable excellence in their areas and have often taken risks, battled odds or rewritten the rules in pursuit of success". [4] [5]

Early life

Her father, Ghulam Rasool Lone, is a bakery owner and she is the youngest of six siblings. [6] [7]

She has played four times for her state at the national level at Amritsar, Haryana, Goa, Himachal and Jammu, prior to which she was with her girls’ team in school. In 2013, she was selected by the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) citing her brilliant performance in the inter-district tournaments. [8] She has represented Jammu & Kashmir at the U-19 and U-23 level. [8] Rasool says she is a fan of Virat Kohli and the Pakistani pacer Mohammad Aamir. [2] [9]

Cricket career

Rasool has represented her state four times at the national level at Amritsar, Haryana, Goa, Himachal and Jammu.[ citation needed ] In 2015, she played a tournament in Telangana and took three wickets in the finals while playing in the under-17 team. [10]

In May 2017, she moved to West Bengal and joined Aditya School of Sports to play for Bengal. Further, she wants to play for India women's national cricket team after getting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Jammu Kashmir Cricket Association. Coached by Abdul Monayem, she currently represents Bengal at the domestic level. [8] As of August 2017, Iqra is training at the indoor facilities of the Eden Gardens under Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). [11]

As a tie-up deal between Michael Clarke Cricket Academy and newly opened Aditya School of Sports, cricketer Michael Clarke announced that there will be young talented cricketers travelling to Sydney on a 12-day programme. This team also includes Iqra Rasool. [12] [13]

The North Zone cricket team is a first-class cricket team that represents northern India in the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy. It is a composite team of players from six first-class Indian teams from northern India competing in the Ranji Trophy: Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Services. Its main home ground is the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar, and it also plays at Gandhi Memorial Science College Ground in Jammu.

Kaul was a part of the victorious India Under-19s team at the 2008 Under-19 Cricket World Cup and was named as one of the players to be drafted for the Indian Premier League, where he signed for the Kolkata Knight Riders. His father, Tej Kaul, played across three seasons in the 1970s for Jammu and Kashmir.

Abdul Qayoom Bagaw is an Indian former first-class cricketer who played for Jammu and Kashmir. Qayoom was regarded as the finest fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir. He worked as a coach for the state association after his playing career.

Popular sports in Jammu and Kashmir include cricket, football and winter sports along with sports like golf, water sports, Ice stock sport and adventure sports. The National Winter Games have been held in Gulmarg in 1996, 2004 and 2009. The first Khelo India Winter Games were held in February and March 2020 in Leh and Gulmarg. Jammu and Kashmir won the most gold medals while the Indian Army team came second with 8 gold medals. The second edition of the winter games were also held successfully in Gulmarg in 2020 with Jammu and Kashmir coming first and Karnataka second.

The Bangladesh cricket team toured India in November 2019 to play two Test and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. An Awards Nominations Committee, comprising prominent cricket journalists and broadcasters from across the globe and the ICC General Manager – Cricket, have determined a shortlist of nominees for each category. For the first time the fans’ voice will be heard in selecting the winners across categories including the Sir Garfield Sobers and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Awards, which celebrate the best overall player from the men's and women's game over the past decade. The fan vote will make up 10% of the voting, while votes from an expert panel will make up the remaining 90%. The voting panel took into account players' performance between 1 January 2011 and 7 October 2020. The announcement of the ICC World XI Teams, along with the winners of the individual ICC awards, was made on 28 December 2020. Virat Kohli won Men's Cricketer of the Decade.
