Iryna Zenyuk is a Ukrainian-American scientist working on the development and deployment of renewable hydrogen energy technologies, and an international chess player. [1] [2] She is a professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California Irvine (UCI) and the director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center at UCI.

Education and career

Zenyuk was born in Ukraine [3] and emigrated to the US at age 15. She received a B.S in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic University (now NYU Tandon School of Engineering), a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University [4] where she worked on the fundamental understanding meso-scale interfacial transport phenomena and electric double layers in fuel cells. She then became a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 2014 to 2015 studying water-management in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell using x-ray at the Advanced Light Source. From 2015 to 2018, she was an assistant professor at Tufts University, before joining University of California, Irvine in 2018 as an assistant professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department. She is also the director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center at UCI. [5]

Zenyuk is an accomplished Chess player, reaching an Elo score above 2450, and was ranked among the top 10 women players in the U.S. in 2012. [6]

At the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, she organized a fundraising to help Ukrainian scientists [7] called the UCI's Ukraine Emergency Response Fund, [8] and collected over $200,000. [9]

LaShanda Teresa James Korley is a Distinguished Professor of Materials Science at the University of Delaware and an expert in soft matter, polymers, and nature-inspired materials. On a larger scale, Korley is also working on developing strategies and technologies to prevent plastic waste in landfills and oceans by upcycling plastic waste to more valuable products. She leads such efforts through the Center for Plastics Innovation, the Center for Research in Soft Matter and Polymers, and also the Center for Hybrid, Active, and Responsive Materials (CHARM). Korley was awarded the 2019 National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers Lloyd N. Ferguson Young Scientist Award for Excellence in Research.

Manning Chaired Professor of Chemical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Wilcox conducts research focused on minimizing the environmental and climate impacts of our dependence on fossil fuels. In January 2021, she became acting Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy and Carbon Management and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (PDAS) for Fossil Energy and Carbon Management.

Héctor Daniel Abruña is a Puerto Rican physical chemist whose work focuses on electrochemistry, molecular electronics, fuel cells, batteries, and electrocatalysis. Abruña is director of the Energy Materials Center and Emile M. Chamot professor for chemistry at Cornell University. He became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2006, a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007, and a Member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2018. Abruña conducts research into battery and fuel cell systems using electrochemical techniques and X-ray microscopy and spectroscopy methods.

Susan Daniel is an American chemical engineer who is a Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell University. Her research considers membrane biophysics and bioelectronic devices. During the COVID-19 pandemic Daniel used bioelectronic devices to develop COVID-19 disease drugs.

Millicent Sullivan is an American chemical engineer and the Alvin B. & Julie O. Stiles Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and department chair at the University of Delaware. She is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. Her research considers the development of polymeric materials for targeted drug delivery and the mechanisms that underpin cell – drug interactions.

Beth L. Pruitt is an American engineer. Upon completing her master's degree in manufacturing systems engineering from Stanford University, Pruitt served as an officer in the United States Navy. She is a full professor of mechanical engineering, biological engineering, and biomolecular science & engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is a fellow of both ASME and AIMBE.
