Irène Gijbels is a mathematical statistician at KU Leuven in Belgium, [1] and an expert on nonparametric statistics. She has also collaborated with TopSportLab, a KU Leuven spin-off, on software for risk assessment of sports injuries. [2]

Education and career

Gijbels earned her Ph.D. in 1990 from Limburgs Universitair Centrum. Her dissertation, supervised by Noël Veraverbeke, was Asymptotic Representations under Random Censoring. [3]

She joined KU Leuven after postdoctoral research as a Fulbright scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. [4]

Book

With Jianqing Fan, Gijbels is the author of Local Polynomial Modelling and Its Applications (CRC Press, 1996). [5]

Recognition

Gijbels is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute and the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts, and a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. [4] [6]

Kristin Estella Lauter is an American mathematician and cryptographer whose research interest is broadly in application of number theory and algebraic geometry in cryptography. She is particularly known for her work in the area of elliptic curve cryptography. She was a researcher at Microsoft Research in Redmond, Washington, from 1999–2021 and the head of the Cryptography Group from 2008–2021; her group developed Microsoft SEAL. In April 2021, Lauter joined Facebook AI Research (FAIR) as the West Coast Head of Research Science. She became the President-Elect of the Association for Women in Mathematics in February 2014 and served as President February 1, 2015 - January 31, 2017.

Jianqing Fan is a statistician, financial econometrician, and data scientist. He is currently the Frederick L. Moore '18 Professor of Finance, Professor of Operations Research and Financial Engineering, Professor of Statistics and Machine Learning, and a former Chairman of Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering (2012–2015) and a former director of Committee of Statistical Studies (2005–2017) at Princeton University, where he directs both statistics lab and financial econometrics lab since 2008.

Peter J. Rousseeuw is a statistician known for his work on robust statistics and cluster analysis. He obtained his PhD in 1981 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, following research carried out at the ETH in Zurich, which led to a book on influence functions. Later he was professor at the Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. Next he was a senior researcher at Renaissance Technologies. He then returned to Belgium as professor at KU Leuven, until becoming emeritus in 2022. His former PhD students include Annick Leroy, Hendrik Lopuhaä, Geert Molenberghs, Christophe Croux, Mia Hubert, Stefan Van Aelst, Tim Verdonck and Jakob Raymaekers.

Aurore Delaigle is a Professor and ARC Future Fellow in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her research interests include nonparametric statistics, deconvolution and functional data analysis.

William Swain Cleveland II is an American computer scientist and Professor of Statistics and Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University, known for his work on data visualization, particularly on nonparametric regression and local regression. He is remembered as one of the developers of the S programming language.

Galit Shmueli is a data scientist who works in Taiwan as Tsing Hua Distinguished Professor at the Institute of Service Science, National Tsing Hua University. She is the author of many textbooks in business statistics and is known for her work on information quality, and on clarifying the difference between explanations and predictions in statistical analyses.

Genevera Irene Allen is an American statistician whose research has involved interpretable machine learning, the reproducibility of machine learning results, and the neuroscience of synesthesia. She is an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, statistics, and computer science at Rice University, and also holds affiliations with Texas Children's Hospital and the Baylor College of Medicine.
