The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB), formerly known as Jamia Abbasia, is a public university located in Bahawalpur, Punjab, Pakistan. It is the only government university within the division, offering standard education both practical and theoretical. [1] [2]
Islamia University began as Jamia Abbasia, a religious university established in Bahawalpur in 1925 following the academic pursuits of Al-Azhar University in Egypt. In 1975, Jamia Abbasia was declared a general university and renamed as The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. [3]
The university started at the Abbasia and Khawaja Fareed campuses with ten departments. Later, 1280 acres of land was allotted to the university on Hasilpur Road about eight kilometers away from the city center which became the Baghdad-ul-Jadeed campus. It consists of 126 teaching departments offering 300 disciples. [4] In 2015, it was ranked 11th in the general (large) category of universities. [5]

Islamia University added two more campuses in 2005: One covering eastern side of Bahawalpur Division (in Bahawalnagar; known as IUB Bahawalnagar Campus) and the other one to cover western side of Bahawalpur Division (in Rahim Yar Khan; known as IUB - Rahim Yar Khan Campus or IUB - RYK Campus).
On 24 July 2023, the Chief Security Officer of Islamia University was arrested by police at a checkpoint as he was actively attempting to flee. A search of his vehicle led to the discovery of various drugs and medicines commonly used for sexual pleasure. [7] The police also discovered more than 5500 obscene videos and pictures of women, many of which were of university staff members and students. [8] A 5-member body to investigate the scandal was formed by The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on 28 July 2023. [9] Punjab interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi also formed a 3-member inquiry committee to investigate the sale of drugs in the university. [10]

Jamia Millia Islamia is a central university located in New Delhi, India. Originally established at Aligarh, United Provinces during the British Empire in 1920, it moved to its current location in Okhla in 1935. It was given the deemed status by the University Grants Commission in 1962. Jamia Millia Islamia became a central university by an act of the Indian Parliament which was passed on 26 December 1988.
Nawab Salahuddin Ahmed Abbasi is a Member of Parliament in Pakistan. He is also the grandson of Sadeq Mohammad Khan V, who was the last ruling Nawab of the Princely State Bahawalpur. He has been elected five times as Member of National Assembly from the city Ahmadpur East. He is also the Chief of Bahawalpur National Awami Party (BNAP) which is allied with Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.

Syed Shuja’at Ali Qadri was the first Grand Mufti of Pakistan, Judge of Federal Shariat Court, a member of the Pakistani Council of Islamic Ideology, and a scholar of Islamic Sciences and modern science. He was influenced by Mustafa Raza Khan Qadri.
Idris Kandhlawi was a Pakistani Sunni scholar during the mid-twentieth century, widely recognized for his contributions to various fields of Islamic studies, including hadith, Quranic studies, Islamic jurisprudence, Prophetic biography, and theology. Holding the titles of Sheikh al-Hadith and Sheikh al-Tafsir, he traced his lineage to Abu Bakr on his father's side and Umar on his mother's side. He studied in Thana Bhawan under Ashraf Ali Thanwi. He studied hadith, first at Mazahir Uloom under Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri, and later at Darul Uloom Deoband under Anwar Shah Kashmiri. He started his professional career at Madrasa Aminia and later went to Darul Uloom Deoband. In 1929 he took a position in Hyderabad State, where he had access to the Asafia Library. This experience enabled him to produce a five-volume Arabic commentary on Mishkat al-Masabih titled Al-Taleeq al-Sabeeh, of which the first four volumes were published in Damascus. His scholarly work garnered recognition in the Arab world. He later assumed the roles of Sheikh al-Tafsir at Darul Uloom Deoband and Sheikh al-Hadith wa al-Tafsir at Jamia Ashrafia. In addition, he served as the Chancellor of Islamia University of Bahawalpur during its tenure as Jamia Abbasia.

Syed Ghulam Moinuddin Gilani commonly known as Baray Lala jee born on Saturday, 22 May 1920 at Golra Sharif, of district Rawalpindi was the Sajjada Nashin of Shrine Golra Sharif. He was the grandson of Pir Meher Ali Shah. He was the son of Syed Ghulam Mohiyyuddin Gilani and father of Pakistani scholar Naseer-uddin-Naseer. He is also the elder brother of Syed Shah Abdul Haq Gilani.
