The 1960 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVII Olympiad and commonly known as Rome 1960, were an international multi-sport event held from 25 August to 11 September 1960 in Rome, Italy. Rome had previously been awarded the administration of the 1908 Summer Olympics, but following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906, the city had no choice but to decline and pass the honour to London. The Soviet Union won the most gold and overall medals at the 1960 Games.
The FISU World University Games, formerly the Universiade, is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The former name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad".
The 2013 Winter Universiade, the XXVI Winter Universiade, was a winter multi-sport event which took place in Trentino, Italy between 11 and 21 December 2013.
The 2013 Summer Universiade, officially known as the XXVII Summer Universiade, was held in the city of Kazan, Russia, the most northerly city ever to host a Summer Universiade. Over 10,400 university athletes from 162 countries participated in 13 mandatory and 14 optional sports, making the 2013 Universiade the biggest ever in the history of the event. For the first time in history a Cultural Universiade was also included, with many festivals and shows held simultaneously with the sporting events. The Universiade was organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and by the authorities of the Russian Federation.
Winter Universiade 2017, the XXVIII Winter Universiade, was a multi-sport winter event which took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 29 January to 8 February 2017. On 29 November 2011, FISU announced that Winter Universiade 2017 would be hosted in Almaty.
An all-time Universiade medal table from 1959 Summer Universiade to 2021 Summer Universiade and 1960 Winter Universiade to 2023 Winter Universiade, is tabulated below. The table is the consequence of the sum of the medal tables of the various editions of the Summer Universiade and the Winter Universiade. The results code are attributed to the IOC country code. Serbia made its debut as independent country at the 2007 Winter Universiade while previously competed as part of SFR Yugoslavia (1961–1991) and FR Yugoslavia/Serbia and Montenegro (1993–2005). Serbia hosted 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade.
Turkey participates at the Universiade.
The 2019 Winter Universiade, the XXIX Universiade, was a multi-sport event for student and youth athletes which took place from 2 to 12 March 2019 in the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk. The 2019 Winter Universiade was the third Universiade hosted in Russia and second as an independent country. The first Universiade, when Russia was a Soviet Republic, was hosted by Moscow in 1973, whereas Kazan, capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade. It is the first Winter Universiade hosted by Russia, and the second time that the event was held in a former USSR republic.
The Philippines has participated at the Universiade debuting at the 1967 Summer Universiade. From 1967 until 2007, athletes representing the country were sent by the University Athletic Association of the Philippines with sanction from Philippine Olympic Committee. Since 2011 it is the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), a member of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), that has been sending competitors representing the country at the Universiade.
Azerbaijan participates at the Universiade.
Russia participated in 12 editions of the Universiade, debuting at the 1993 Summer Universiade. The 2013 Summer Universiade was the best for Russia, beating the previous total medal and gold record of the 1973 Summer Universiade, of the then USSR. Furthermore, Russia produced a number of Universiade records, including the total medals won. Russia hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan and the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk.
Brazil is 25th on the all time medal table in Summer Universiade. Brazil hasn't won any medal in Winter Universiade.The country participated on all the Summer Games editions and hosted the 1963 Summer Universiade in Porto Alegre.
Czechoslovakia participated regularly in the Summer and Winter Universiades since their foundation until the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993. The country also hosted three editions of the Winter Universiades: twice in Špindlerův Mlýn and once in Štrbské Pleso (1987).
"Chinese Taipei," the country designation under which Taiwan competes at international sports events, has participated in all editions of the Summer Universiade held since the 1989 Summer Universiade.
Estonia has participated at the Universiade since 1993. Estonia made the first appearance at the Winter Universiade in 1997.
The 2025 FISU Winter World University Games, also known as the XXXII Winter World University Games, or the 32nd Winter Universiade, and commonly known as Turin 2025 or Torino 2025, is a multi-sport event scheduled from Jan. 13-23, 2025, in Turin, Italy. The Piedmontese capital was confirmed as the host city for the games on 15 May 2021. This will be the 12th time in the history that the event will be held in Italy after occurring for the seventh time after the most recent 2019 Summer Universiade held in Naples.
South Korea has competed in the FISU World University Games in several years.
Ukraine competed at the 1997 Summer Universiade in Sicily, Italy, from 20 to 31 August 1995. The country was represented in athletics, fencing (20), swimming (16), football (15), artistic gymnastics (10), diving (6), tennis (4), and rhythmic gymnastics (2). Ukraine did not compete in basketball, volleyball, and water polo. Ukraine was the most successful team in fencing, winning the most medals and a medal in each men's competition. Men's football team finished 4th.
