Ivan Ivanovich Valberkh (1766 - 1819) was a Russian ballet master, choreographer and teacher. He was the first native born choreographer and ballet master of Russian nationality. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Russian ballet scene was dominated by him and played a huge role in developing style of Russian ballet. [1] [2]
He was fluent in French, Italian and German and knew history, philosophy and mythology. He performed 36 ballets and translated around 30 French plays. [3] He championed the rights of Russian dancers and resented foreign interference. [4]
He was born as Ivan Lesogorov on 14 July 1766 in Moscow, Russian Empire. [5] He is also referred as Waldberg or Lessogorov-Wahlberg or Walberch. His father was a theater tailor and his great-grandfather was a captured Swedish officer who earlier served in the army of Sweden during the reign of King Charles XII and decided to stay in Russia. [6]
He studied at the St Petersburg Ballet School under Gasparo Angiolini and Giuseppe Canziani and graduated in 1786. [7] [8] He published two letters in which he accused the Jean-Georges Noverre of violating the rule of the three unities. In the 1786, he become soloist in court ballet troupe, a position which was almost never awarded to the Russians, at the Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg. [9] In 1793, he introduced Prince Alexander Aleksandrovigh Shakhovskoy to theaters. [10]
In 1794, he was appointed to lead the St Petersburg School and promoted to post of ballet inspector to oversee the company. [11] [12] He was the first Russian to head St Petersburg Ballet School. [13] When the ballet school was closed for some time and the students were dismissed, he took some of the most capable students to his home, where they continued their studies. There he taught Eugenia Kolosova and Adam Glushkovsky. [14]
In 1795, he made his debut with A Happy Repentance. His ballet 'The New Werther' (1799), based on Goethe, established his reputation as the first Russian to make a contemporary themed ballet. He, probably for the first time in history of ballet, took a recent tragic event as a plot. Between 1794 and 1801, he was a teacher at the St. Petersburg Theatrical School. In 1802, he was sent on a business trip to Paris at public expense to learn advanced ballet. There he criticised French ballet and recognized authorities such as Auguste Vestris and returned back to Russia disappointed. He also worked and taught in Moscow in 1807, 1808, and 1811. [15]
In 1809, his Romeo and Juliet was first ballet to be performed based on a Shakespearean tragedy in Russia. [16] [17] He succeeded Charles Didelot as ballet master of Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg after he left in 1811. During the Napoleonic wars, he choreographed many ballets which had patriotic themes. His first patriotic ballet “Love for the Fatherland” was performed 4 days after Battle of Borodino. His patriotic ballets were so inspiring that many people in the audience enlisted in the army. [18] [19]
He married Sofija Petrovna Walberg and had 14 children, including Maria Ivanovna Walberg, with her. He died on 26 July 1819 in St Petersburg. [20]
During his time under Gaspero Angiolini, he started preferring pantomime and mastered it. Charles Le Picq was a role model for him. [21] [22] His productions were filled with action which stated the instructive importance of ballet. He embraced the concepts of Noverre's ballet d'action in his ballets to create dramatic elements. [23] [24] In his productions, the pantomime often suppressed the dance. He became attracted to the idea of sentimentalism and its democracy. Valberkh created a new style that was based the traditions of sentimentalism in Russian art. [25] He called his choreographic works “moral ballets”. He also wanted to stop being guided by the tastes of the royal court. He sought to collaborate mainly with Russian composers like Nikolai Sergeevich Titov and Nikolai Alexeyevich Titov. [26]
He incorporated Russian folk dance elements into ballets. [27] [28] In his ballet 'Militia', he invoked folk style, kazachok and khorovod, together with military marches to enhance a drama contrasting merry celebration with impassioned scenes of the militia's departure. [29]
He often took inspiration and based his ballets on literature. [30] His productions mostly repeated European repertoire. His creative work was filled with Russian themed ballets and established a distinctive type of national performance, divertissements which depicted ordinary people's life. [31] [32] [33] He also made ballet on foreign historical personage. [34]
He felt that the center of attention was not a hero with his passions, but a simple man with his feelings. He looked for his heroes among ordinary people and often showed an ordinary person who remained faithful to his convictions despite being in difficult circumstances. His productions had two titles - one told about the main character and the plot while the other directly deduced the moral that triumphed the last act. Izumo no Okuni was a Japanese entertainer and shrine maiden who is believed to have invented the theatrical art form of kabuki. She is thought to have begun performing her new art style of kabuki theatre in the dry riverbed of the Kamo River in Kyoto. Okuni's troupe quickly gained immense popularity, and were known for their performers, who were often lower-class women Okuni had recruited to act in her all-female theatre group.
Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64, is a ballet by Sergei Prokofiev based on William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. First composed in 1935, it was substantially revised for its Soviet premiere in early 1940. Prokofiev made from the ballet three orchestral suites and a suite for solo piano.
Carlo Blasis was an Italian dancer, choreographer and dance theoretician born in Naples. He is well known for his very rigorous dance classes, sometimes lasting four hours long. He danced in France, Italy, London and Russia. Blasis insisted that his students learn theories and definitions of dance steps. He trained all of Enrico Cecchetti's teachers and it is thought that Blasis's influence in his training is what led Cecchetti to create the Cecchetti method of ballet.
Joseph Mazilier was a 19th-century French dancer, balletmaster and choreographer. He was born as Giulio Mazarini. He was most noted for his ballets Paquita (1844) and Le Corsaire (1856). He created the role of James in La Sylphide with Marie Taglioni. Marie Guy-Stéphan debuted in Aelia et Mysis at the Paris Opéra when she moved in 1853 to Paris.
Lucette Aldous was an Australian prima ballerina during her performing years. She was the resident principal dancer with The Australian Ballet, and well known for performing the role of Kitri in the film of Rudolf Nureyev's production of Don Quixote, receiving many honours for her years of performance including being appointed AC in the 2018 Australia Day Honours list.
Grotesque dance is a category of theatrical dance that became more clearly differentiated in the 18th century and was incorporated into ballet, although it had its roots in earlier centuries. As opposed to the danse noble or "noble dance" performed in royal courts which emphasized beauty of movement and noble themes, grotesque dances were comic or lighthearted and created for buffoons and commedia dell'arte characters to amuse and entertain spectators or patrons. In 16th and 17th centuries grotesque dances were often presented as an anti-masque, performed between the acts of more serious courtly entertainments. Likewise, the 17th century entrée de ballet sometimes contained grotesque sequences, most notably those devised by the Duke of Nemours for the court of Louis XIII.

In 1830, Italian ballet teacher and writer Carlo Blasis (1803–1878) published his second work on the analysis of ballet technique, called The Code of Terpsichore. This work was composed of figures, or illustrations, organized alphabetically, inscribing the ideal forms of poses, steps, and jumps in ballet. In codifying the tradition of ballet training, Blasis valued both the mechanical and aesthetic aspects of ballet.

NathalieFitzjames was a Romantic era French ballerina who was especially admired in Italy. Fitzjames appeared in La Resemblance at Her Majesty's Theatre in London in May 1838, receiving the following review of her first appearance:
"She resembles, both in expression, figure, and style of dancing, our favourite of three years past, Pauline Leroux. Her pretensions as an artiste as not so high as those of Fanny Elssler or Duvernay, but she has been taught in the best school, and in the present state of the ballet she must be considered a decided acquisition here. She is full of spirits and gaiety, and flies about the stage in a manner that is very captivating. The dancing of her feet is near perfection, but her arms are not moved with freedom, and she is deficient to a certain extent both in dignity and grace."
BaiShuxiang is a Chinese dancer and former prima ballerina, known for her role in the early development of professional ballet in China. After training at the Beijing Dance School as a teenager, Bai was appointed principal dancer of the newly formed Central Ballet Ensemble in 1958, becoming the first Chinese dancer to perform the role of Swan Queen in Swan Lake.

Clytemnestra is a 90-minute ballet choreographed by Martha Graham. It premiered on April 1, 1958, at the Adelphi Theatre in New York with music composed by Halim El-Dabh and sets designed by Isamu Noguchi. Following Cave of the Heart, Errand into the Maze, and Night Journey, Clytemnestra continued Graham's series of choreography inspired by Greek mythology.
