J.J. Wright (born 1984 or 1985) [1] is an American composer, conductor, and piano player who currently serves as the director of the University of Notre Dame Folk Choir in South Bend, Indiana. [2] [3] [4] He is the composer of O Emmanuel, a 2016 Adventide album that drew upon jazz and sacred music traditions and peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Albums chart. [5] [6] Wright is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he earned Master of Sacred Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees, and of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts. Early life and education

Wright was born in Buffalo, New York. [1] His mother and father, Joanne and Jim Wright, co-founded Catholic F.M. radio station WLOF, which broadcast in the Buffalo metropolitan area. [7] He attended The New School for Jazz for undergraduate education, graduating the school with a Bachelor of Arts. [1] [8] He later pursued a Master of Sacred Music degree at the University of Notre Dame, the institution from which he would later be awarded Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting. [1] [9]

Professional career

In 2014, Wright released his solo debut album, Inward Looking Outward . [10] The album, a series of sacred jazz compositions, received positive reviews. [10] [11] Since then, Wright has published several full albums, including: O Emmanuel, a 2016 Adventide album in the style of sacred jazz that peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Albums chart; Vespers for the Immaculate Conception , a 2019 album that fused the improvisational style of jazz with that of a traditional sacred choir; and The Passion, a 2023 jazz-free concept album that used the Passion of Christ as a lens through which to interpret and process the sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. [2] [5] [8] As director of the University of Notre Dame Folk Choir, Wright has also overseen the production of Catch the Spirit, a sacred music album that draws upon the musical traditions of East Africans and of African-Americans. Wright has also performed as a part of the United States Naval Academy Band. [8]

Chaplain Corby of Gettysburg is an outdoor sculpture by American artist Samuel Murray (1869–1941). It is located on the University of Notre Dame campus, and is owned by the University. The sculpture, made of bronze and limestone, depicts Father William Corby giving absolution to soldiers at the Battle of Gettysburg.

<i>Christ and the Samaritan Woman</i>

Christ and the Samaritan Woman is an outdoor sculpture by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Created in 1957, the sculpture resides in front of O’Shaughnessy Hall on the campus of the University of Notre Dame as part of the Shaheen-Mestrovic Memorial, which was completed in 1985 by the Department of Landscape Architecture and Planning in the South Bend office of Cole Associates. The marble and bronze sculpture depicts the events in John 4, in which Jesus converses and evangelizes to a woman from Samaria, with whom the Jews would not normally associate. Eli J. Shaheen, a Notre Dame alum, was the donor for the project, which is owned by the university. The “Woman at the Well,” as it is often referred, is flanked by sculptures of the gospel writers Luke the Evangelist and John the Evangelist. It has been regarded as the most notable and celebrated of Meštrović's works from his period at Notre Dame.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">The Choir of Newman College</span>

The Choir of Newman College is a collegiate chapel and concert Choir affiliated with Newman College, a Catholic residential college of the University of Melbourne. Founded by Dr Gary Ekkel in 2002, the Choir consists of 27 choral scholars drawn predominantly from residents of the college and recent alumni. The Choir participates in a Choral Eucharist at 7pm on Sundays during the University semester as well as singing a Compline service on the first Thursday of each month.
