The Poumai people, also known as the Poumai Naga, are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group inhabits the Northeast Indian states of Manipur and Nagaland. The Poumai predominantly live in the Senapati District of Manipur, though there are villages in Nagaland state and one in Ukhrul district. The Poumai mainly live in 100 villages that have been broadly divided into three blocks: Paomata, Lepaona and Chilivai. The Poumai speak their own language, Poula, and are generally Christians.
Nongthombam Biren Singh is an Indian politician, former footballer and journalist who is currently serving as the 12th Chief Minister of Manipur since 2017 representing Heingang Assembly constituency in the Manipur Legislative Assembly since 2002 as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Purul is a village in Senapati district, Manipur, India. Whereas Purul is the name given by other people, Hiimai ki is the name given by its own inhabitants. 'Hiimai' refers to its people and 'ki' to a place/land, meaning land of Hiimai. The predominant inhabitants belong to Poumai Naga tribe. The village consists of two contiguous habitations viz Purul Akutpa & Purul Atongba . As per the latest census of India in 2011, 99.4% of the people follow Christianity and the rest follow naturism. And literacy rate is 74%. Purul is bordered by Phuba (North), Shirong (East), Oinam Hill(West) and Koide (South). At the village level, each of Purul Akutpa and Purul Atongba is administered by a selected person known as Village Chairman assisted by Secretary and other persons. One elected person represent Purul in the Autonomous District Council (ADC), Senapati. Purul along with Oinam Hill, Phuba, Koide, Karong and other areas are represented at Manipur State level by one Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). Name of the constituency is 47,Karong Legislative Assembly Constituency. It is the 47th of total 60 legislative constituencies of the Manipur state. Purul is 20 km from the nearest town i.e. Maram, which is located on the highway, NH-2. It is 45 km from District Headquarters, 112 km from the nearest airport, 140 km from the nearest railway station. Medical practitioner/physicians and other medical personnels are stationed at the Nearest Primary Health Centre (PHC), Oinam Hill. The PHC is 10 km from Purul. The village has one government higher secondary school, one private secondary school and five government primary schools.
Chingjaroi originally known Asinei /Asewnei or Swemi alternatively called Zingchui/Zingjui by the Tangkhul, Shomai by the Poumai and khotsami by the Chakhesangs is a large village located in northern Ukhrul district, Manipur state, India and bordered mainly by villages like Jessami, Tasom, Chingai, Marem, Peh, Phaibung and Laii (Gaziphema)originally. Later villages like Razai, Namrei and Kharasom came to settle in the land of chingjaroi and became its neighboring villages. The village consists of three sister villages, namely, Chingjaroi Khullen, Chingjaroi Khunou and Chingjaroi Christian Village. Chingjaroi Khullen the nearest from the National Highway 150 is approximately 84 kilometers from Ukhrul district headquarters.
A Legislative Assembly election was held in Manipur on 4 March and 8 March 2017 to elect the 60 members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, as the term of the previous Assembly was to end on 18 March 2017. Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines were used along with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in four assembly constituencies in Manipur.
