J. Michael Ortiz is an American educator and the 5th president of Cal Poly Pomona. Prior to this appointment on August 1,2003 Ortiz was professor of education at Appalachian State University and vice president for academic affairs at Fresno State. [2] He was listed in 2005 as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in 2005 by Hispanic Business magazine. [3] In 2008 Latino Magazine named him one of the Top 25 Latinos in Education. [4]
Ortiz announced on January 30,2014 that he would be stepping down as President of Cal Poly Pomona at the end of 2014. He was succeeded by Soraya M. Coley,who served as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs of California State University Bakersfield since 2005.

International Polytechnic High School,commonly abbreviated merely as iPoly,is a public college-preparatory demonstration high school (9-12) located on the California State Polytechnic University,Pomona campus and operated by the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) in conjunction with the College of Education and Integrative Studies at the university. iPoly's curriculum is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is approved by the University of California and California State University. It maintains a unique affiliation with the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA),which is also run by LACOE. Since iPoly does not lie in a fixed school district,it draws students from throughout Los Angeles,San Bernardino,Orange and Riverside counties. His academic career began in 1983 as a professor of psychology at California State University,Fresno for four years,followed by three years chairing that department,one as assistant to the president,and culminating in six years as the university's provost. He was named Interim President of California State University,San Marcos on June 25th,1997 as the California State University Board of Trustees rushed to respond to the sudden announcement of that institution's founding president's intention to depart only eight days earlier. Gonzalez was eventually rewarded with a permanent appointment to the position more than a year later after an exhaustive search of potential candidates,with the trustees saying "he earned it the old-fashioned way–through dedication and hard work.”

The Classroom,Laboratory &Administration Building,commonly known simply as the CLA Building,was an administrative building on the campus of California State Polytechnic University,Pomona. Designed by Albuquerque,New Mexico-based architect Antoine Predock in the Futurist style and completed in 1993,it has come to be the defining image of the university. The Administration portion of the building was demolished in August 2022 after a discovery of a fault line under the building.
