Construction and career
Hayashio was laid down at Kawasaki Heavy Industries Kobe Shipyard on 6 June 1960 and launched on 31 July 1961. She was commissioned on 30 June 1962, into the 2nd Submarine Group of the 1st Submarine Group.
On 11 August 1967, she made contact with a portion of her hull with the seabed while training in the Tsushima area, damaging a portion of her sonar. [1]
On 16 March 1968, she was transferred to the 3rd Submarine under the 1st Submarine Group, and she was incorporated with JDS Harushio. She participated in Hawaii dispatch training from July 20th to October 8th of the same year.
On 16 October 1973, the 3rd Submarine was reorganized into the 2nd Submarine Group, which was newly formed under the Self-Defense Fleet.
At around 9:30 pm on 31 March 1978, she came into contact with JDS Natsugumo while training at Enshu-nada, about 120 km south of Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture. The periscope of Asashio and the right shaft of Natsugumo were partially damaged. At that time, anti-submarine attack training aimed at Asashio was underway in this water area, and Asashio came into contact with Natsugumo at a periscope depth of about 16 meters. [2]
She was decommissioned on 30 March 1983. She had 2,330 dives, 21,674 hours and 14 minutes underwater, 8,066 hours and 58 minutes surfaced, and a total nautical mile of 201,243.4 nautical miles.
JDS Ōshio (SS-561) was the only ship of her kind in service with Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force. Ōshio was planned and built to replace the aging JDS Kuroshio.
JDS Oyashio (SS-511) was a submarine of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, named after the Oyashio Current, a cold current that comes down through the Bering Strait.
JDS Kuroshio (SS-570) was the fifth boat of the Uzushio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 27 November 1974.
JDS Nagatsuki (DD-167) was the fourth ship of Takatsuki-class destroyers. She was commissioned on 12 February 1970.
JDS Hayashio (SS-521) was the lead boat of the Hayashio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 30 June 1962.
JDS Harushio (SS-563) was the second boat of the Asashio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 1 December 1967.
JDS Michishio (SS-564) was the third boat of the Asashio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 29 August 1968.
JDS Arashio (SS-565) was the fourth boat of the Asashio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 25 July 1969.
JDS Uzushio (SS-566) was the lead boat of the Uzushio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 21 January 1971.
JDS Makishio (SS-567) was the second boat of the Uzushio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 2 February 1972.
JDS Isoshio (SS-568) was the third boat of the Uzushio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 25 November 1972.
JDS Narushio (SS-569) was the fourth boat of the Uzushio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 28 September 1973.
JDS Takashio (SS-571) was the sixth boat of the Uzushio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 30 January 1976.
JDS Yaeshio (SS-572) was the seventh boat of the Uzushio-class submarines. She was commissioned on 7 March 1978.
JDS Yūshio (SS-573) was the lead boat of the Yūshio-class submarine. She was commissioned on 7 March 1978.
JDS Mochishio (SS-574) was a Yūshio-class submarine. She was commissioned on 5 March 1981.
JDS Setoshio (SS-575) was a Yūshio-class submarine. She was commissioned on 17 March 1982.
JDS Okishio (SS-576) was a Yūshio-class submarine. She was commissioned on 1 March 1983.
JDS Hamashio (SS-578) was a Yūshio-class submarine. She was commissioned on 5 March 1985.
JDS Takeshio (SS-580) was a Yūshio-class submarine. She was commissioned on 5 March 1985.
