JHub Maccabi Community Centre (previously Perth Jewish Centre) is a Jewish Community Centre in Yokine that serves the Jewish communities of Perth and Western Australia.
The centre is home to a number of organisations such as the Western Australia chapters of the Jewish National Fund, United Israel Appeal, National Council of Jewish Women and the Women's International Zionist Organization. It also houses the Holocaust Institute of WA and Menora Charity Fund (incorporating Jewish Care). [1]
It is situated within a Jewish precinct that also includes Perth Hebrew Congregation and Carmel School, a Jewish Day School. [2]
The centre was redeveloped in recent years, with the main construction completed in 2024. A forthcoming Holocaust education centre will open, alongside a cafe, offices, a day-care centre, lecture theatre, function spaces and landscaped gardens. [3] [4]
Maccabi WA has been based at the site since 1952. [2] [5] In 1974, a Jewish community centre was established on the grounds of Maccabi, and became known as the Perth Jewish Centre. [2]
In 2016, the centre staff began working on plans to secure the future site, envisaging a redevelopment of the site. [6] In 2019, the Australian Government committed $6 million to the redevelopment, providing more modern facilities, as well as the establishment of a Holocaust museum. [6] [7]
In 2020, the Government of Western Australia pledged $6 million to the redevelopment of the site for a new Jewish community centre. The project also received a $6 million commitment from the Commonwealth fund. [8] [4] In September 2023, Mark Dreyfus, Attorney-General of Australia visited the site amid its construction. [3] The main construction was completed in 2024. [9] The new building was designed by architect, David Karotkin, who has previously worked as an architect in Tel Aviv in Israel. [10] [11]
The Holocaust education centre will also cater to the wider multifaith Western Australia population as it aims to provide on-site programs to visiting high school groups. [3]
The centre will also commemorate Aboriginal social justice activist William Cooper with a memorial. In the wake of Kristallnacht, Cooper led a December 1938 protest march in Melbourne to the German consulate, condemning the persecution of Jews by Nazi Germany. [12] [4]
In September 2024, the Jewish National Fund arranged for Eylon Levy to address 400 attendees at its Annual Event held at the centre. [13] In November, the centre is hosting the Israeli Film Festival, showcasing Israeli cinema. [14]

Wyndham is the northernmost town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, 3,315 kilometres (2,060 mi) northeast of Perth via the Great Northern Highway. It was established in 1886 to service a new goldfield at Halls Creek, and it is now a port and service centre for the east Kimberley with a population of 941 as of the 2021 census. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up 54% of the population. Wyndham comprises two areas - the original town site at Wyndham Port situated on Cambridge Gulf, and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) by road to the south, the Three Mile area with the residential and shopping area for the port, also founded in 1886. The history of Jews in Australia traces the history of Australian Jews from the British settlement of Australia commencing in 1788. Though Europeans had visited Australia before 1788, there is no evidence of any Jewish sailors among the crew. The first Jews known to have come to Australia came as convicts transported to Botany Bay in 1788 aboard the First Fleet that established the first European settlement on the continent, on the site of present-day Sydney.
Carmel School is a private Modern Orthodox Jewish school founded in 1959 in Perth, Western Australia. It offers Jewish religious and cultural education as well as conventional secular education for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 through a full-time primary school and a high school. It is the only Jewish day school in Western Australia.
Marribank, earlier known as Carrolup Native Settlement, is located in the Shire of Kojonup, Western Australia, approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi) north-west of Katanning. It was the site of one of two large native settlements for Indigenous Australians established by the office of the Protector of Aborigines of the Western Australian state government. The settlement was one place that the Stolen Generations were taken after being separated from their families. Artworks produced by children at Carrolup are some of the only extant objects produced by members of the Stolen Generations across Australia.

Australian Jews, or Jewish Australians, are Jews who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia. In the 2021 census there were 99,956 people who identified Judaism as their religious affiliation and 29,113 Australians who identified as Jewish by ancestry, an increase from 97,355 and 25,716, respectively, from the 2016 census. The actual number is almost certainly higher, because being a Jew is not just about being religious, but the census data is based on religious affiliation, so secular Jews often feel it would be inaccurate to answer with "Judaism". Also, since the question is optional, many practising Holocaust survivors and Haredi Jews are believed to prefer not to disclose their religion in the census. By comparison, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz estimated a Jewish-Australian population of 120,000–150,000, while other estimates based on the death rate in the community estimate the size of the community as 250,000, which would make them 1% of the population. Based on the census data, Jewish citizens make up about 0.4% of the Australian population. The Jewish community of Australia is composed mostly of Ashkenazi Jews, though there are Jews in Australia from many other traditions and levels of religious observance and participation in the Jewish community.
The Perth Hebrew Congregation is synagogue located in the Perth, suburb of Menora, Western Australia. Established as an organization in 1892, it is the oldest of three shuls and one temple serving the Jewish community in Perth. The synagogue offers facilities for daily services, educational programmes, PHC also houses a library, a mikveh and a bookshop. It is situated within a Jewish precinct that also includes JHub Maccabi Community Centre and Carmel School, a Jewish Day School.
A UK Holocaust Memorial and learning centre was first proposed in 2015 to preserve the testimony of British Holocaust survivors and concentration camp liberators and to honour Jewish and other victims of attempted extermination by Nazi Germany, including Gypsies and disabled people.

Eylon Aslan-Levy, also known as Eylon Levy, is a British-Israeli figure who served as official Israeli government spokesman, from the start of 2023 Israel–Hamas war to March 2024, when he was suspended as spokesman after complaints from the UK government following his public criticism of their stance towards Israel and the war against Hamas. He continues his public advocacy work, with a podcast partly-sponsored by the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism. He also visits Jewish diaspora communities around the world with organizations such as the Jewish National Fund and StandWithUs.
WA Wildlife, operated by Native ARC Inc, is a wildlife rescue, treatment and rehabilitation facility in the Beeliar Wetlands near Bibra Lake, Western Australia; it was the first wildlife rehabilitation facility to be licensed as a veterinary hospital by the Veterinary Practice Board of Western Australia in 2018. It has a purpose built hospital to care for the animals, with intensive care unit facilities to care for animals that would have previously been euthanised. The hospital provides treatment to more than 6500 sick and injured native animals each year. Facilities include a triage room, treatment room, consultation room, laboratory, surgery, radiology, ICU, seabird, mammal and reptile wards, isolation ward with decontamination chamber and a stand-alone necropsy suite. WA Wildlife is part of group of organisations helping to protect the nests of the snake-necked turtles that breed around Bibra Lake. In 2020 it was estimated that 25 of the hatchlings were able to make it to the safety of the lake. Temple David is a Progressive Jewish congregation and synagogue located in Mount Lawley, an inner northern suburb of Perth. It is the sole progressive congregation in the state of Western Australia. The congregation was established in 1952.
