Jack Thomas Cassinetto (March 26, 1944 - January 4, 2018, Sonora, California) was a prolific California plein air artist of the tonalism movement who painted primarily Northern California landscapes such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, the Gold Country, the Northern California Coast, and the American River and Sacramento River. Personal life

Cassinetto was born on March 26, 1944, in Sonora, California, to Ben and Mary Sardella Cassinetto, both scions of pioneering families from Genoa, Italy. [3] [4] In 1966, he earned his BA in Art and English from California State University, Sacramento. [5] He earned a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Northern Colorado in 1972. [5]

As a young artist, he dabbled in sculpture, pottery, jewelry making and watercolor. He had painted all his adult life. His work was exclusively oil painting until 2008, and generally on boards. All work after 2008 is acrylic. His subjects were mostly Northern California landscapes from regions such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, the Northern California Coast, the American River, the Sacramento River, the Gold Country, and other locations in this area. Aside from being an artist, he had multiple occupations throughout his life, including that of being a commodities broker, a partner in the family business, a teacher, a Sonora City Councilman and Mayor of Sonora (1986-1994). [3] As Mayor, he had always been pro-development and pro-growth:

Maybe it's time for a change, to get someone from the other side. But I hope the people who plan on running will concentrate on more than one development here and one there and look at the big picture. Government is potholes, street lights and job descriptions. I hope they have an interest in the entire constituency. [3]

He was first married to Betty Jean Carter. Their only child, Paul, was born in 1968. Jack spent the last 35 years of his life with his second wife, Connie Sue Clark, a photographer. He died in his sleep on January 4, 2018. [10]

Career

Too many artists get seduced by sunlight and have to continually adjust for light variations. The lighting conditions in [my studio] are perfect. It never changes from day to night. I always know the color on the canvas is what I want it to be. —Jack Cassinetto

Jack Cassinetto was a plein air painter of the tonalism movement, "one of the finest artists of his time and genre." [10] He often used reclaimed arts and crafts framing or antique furniture in his work. [8] [11] His influences included Granville Redmond, Xavier Martinez, Gottardo Piazzoni and Arthur Frank Mathews. Cassinetto's work has been featured in publications including American Art Review (2004), [8] Plein Air Magazine (June 2004), Southwest Art (October 2002), [20] American Bungalow, [12] and The Artists' Bluebook (2005). [21] His work has been displayed at the Pacific Grove Art Institute (1995), San Joaquin Delta College (2008), Pasadena Historical Museum (2000) and the Alburquerque Museum (2003, 2004, 2005).

Chiura Obata was a well-known Japanese-American artist and popular art teacher. A self-described "roughneck", Obata went to the United States in 1903, at age 17. After initially working as an illustrator and commercial decorator, he had a successful career as a painter, following a 1927 summer spent in the Sierra Nevada, and was a faculty member in the Art Department at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1932 to 1954, interrupted by World War II, when he spent a year in an internment camp. Arny Karl was one of the key artists in the early stages of the California Plein-Air Revival, which started in the 1980s and continues to this day. Along with Tim Solliday and Peter Seitz Adams, Karl helped revitalize the use of pastels to paint outdoors or en plein air, as the French described regarding the practice of working directly from nature. Karl was a student of Theodore Lukits (1897–1992), who was a prominent California Impressionist and the best known Early California painter to have worked in pastel. His work has been included in a number of museum exhibitions, is represented in a number of prominent public and private collections and has been the subject of a number of curatorial essays.

Peter Seitz Adams is an American artist. His body of work focuses on landscapes and seascapes created en plein air in oil or pastel as well as enigmatic figure and still-life paintings. He is noted for his colorful, high-key palette and broad brushwork. Adams has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums, including throughout California, the Western United States, and on the East Coast in Philadelphia, Vermont, and New York. Adams is the longest serving President of the California Art Club and has served on its board of directors in Pasadena, California from 1993 to 2018. He is also a writer on subjects relating to historic artists for the California Art Club Newsletter, as well as for a number of the organization's exhibition catalogs.

Dugan Aguilar (1947–2018) was a Native American photographer whose work has been exhibited by major museums. He is "among the first Native photographers to document Native life in Yosemite and California through his own vision."

Charles Dorman Robinson was an American panorama, cyclorama, landscape, and marine painter. He is known for his seascapes and landscapes of Northern California, including over a hundred paintings of Yosemite Valley. He was known as "the dean of Pacific Coast artists".
