Jack Coulter (born 1994) is an Irish artist. [1] He is widely known for his paintings and the visceral quality within his work. In 2020, The Financial Times described Coulter as one of the most popular abstract painters emerging today. [2] In 2021, Forbes featured Coulter in their 30 Under 30 list. [3]

Life and work

Coulter grew up surrounded by abstract art, from an early age he became influenced by post-war Abstract Expressionism and his aunt Christine, who was an abstract printmaker. [4] Whilst still in art school, limited edition prints of his painting 'Halesia' were given to the winners of the GQ Men of The Year Awards. [5] He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2015.

At 21 years old, his painting titled '21' was purchased for the Arts Council Collection of Northern Ireland, the UK's most widely seen collection of modern and contemporary art, making him the collection's youngest artist. [6]

Coulter has synesthesia, a neurological condition which has had a profound effect on his work, other well known synesthete artists include David Hockney, Vincent van Gogh and Joan Mitchell. [7] In an interview with The Independent, Coulter's earliest memories of this date back to childhood, where he recalled the sound of his own heartbeat resonating pulses of colour. Throughout his teenage years he would frequently paint while listening to jazz musicians such as Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, translating the colours of the sounds onto canvas, with the aural timbres of the music inspiring the pace and motion of his paint strokes. [8]

In April 2018, Coulter painted Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto live with London Chamber Orchestra in front of a full audience at Cadogan Hall in London, it was also streamed worldwide. He had a solo article in British Vogue covering the performance. [10]

In 2018 he was commissioned by The Freddie Mercury Estate, depicting one of the iconic Freddie Mercury tracks Mr. Bad Guy on canvas. The piece was then exhibited in 'Bohemian Rhapsody: The Queen Exhibition' in Seoul. [11]

In 2020, Coulter collaborated with Brit Award-winning musician Jack Garratt. He provided album artwork for Garratt's sophomore album Love, Death & Dancing under Island Records. [12]

One of his paintings titled 'Rosegold' was auctioned by The Art of Elysium in Los Angeles through Paddle8 in 2018. [13] He was the youngest artist included and the piece was purchased by Shanola Hampton.

He has also collaborated with Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and Byredo for Dazed. He was asked to transcribe each brand's scent on canvas. [14]

Coulter's work is owned by many notable individuals and companies such as Anne Hathaway, Elton John, Coca-Cola, Billie Eilish, Post Malone, Antoni Porowski and Hilary Weston. [15]

Paul Jackson Pollock was an American painter. A major figure in the abstract expressionist movement, Pollock was widely noticed for his "drip technique" of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface, enabling him to view and paint his canvases from all angles. It was called all-over painting and action painting, since he covered the entire canvas and used the force of his whole body to paint, often in a frenetic dancing style. This extreme form of abstraction divided critics: some praised the immediacy of the creation, while others derided the random effects.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Monochrome painting</span> Paintings made with a single color

Monochromatic painting has played a significant role in modern and contemporary Western visual art, originating with the early 20th-century European avant-gardes. Artists have explored the non-representational potential of a single color, investigating shifts in value, diversity of texture, and formal nuances as a means of emotional expression, visual investigation into the inherent properties of painting, as well as a starting point for conceptual works. Ranging from geometric abstraction in a variety of mediums to non-representational gestural painting, monochromatic works continue to be an important influence in contemporary art.

During the Great Depression, Krasner joined the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, transitioning to war propaganda artworks during the War Services era.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Color field</span> Art movement

Color field painting is a style of abstract painting that emerged in New York City during the 1940s and 1950s. It was inspired by European modernism and closely related to abstract expressionism, while many of its notable early proponents were among the pioneering abstract expressionists. Color field is characterized primarily by large fields of flat, solid color spread across or stained into the canvas creating areas of unbroken surface and a flat picture plane. The movement places less emphasis on gesture, brushstrokes and action in favor of an overall consistency of form and process. In color field painting "color is freed from objective context and becomes the subject in itself."

Originally associated with the Washington Color School, a group of Washington-area artists that developed a form of abstract art from color field painting in the 1950s and 1960s, Gilliam moved beyond the group's core aesthetics of flat fields of color in the mid-60s by introducing both process and sculptural elements to his paintings.

The phrase synesthesia in art has historically referred to a wide variety of artists' experiments that have explored the co-operation of the senses in the genres of visual music, music visualization, audiovisual art, abstract film, and intermedia. The age-old artistic views on synesthesia have some overlap with the current neuroscientific view on neurological synesthesia, but also some major differences, e.g. in the contexts of investigations, types of synesthesia selected, and definitions. While in neuroscientific studies synesthesia is defined as the elicitation of perceptual experiences in the absence of the normal sensory stimulation, in the arts the concept of synaesthesia is more often defined as the simultaneous perception of two or more stimuli as one gestalt experience. The usage of the term synesthesia in art should, therefore, be differentiated from neurological synesthesia in scientific research. Synesthesia is by no means unique to artists or musicians. Only in the last decades have scientific methods become available to assess synesthesia in persons. For synesthesia in artists before that time one has to interpret (auto)biographical information. For instance, there has been debate on the neurological synesthesia of historical artists like Kandinsky and Scriabin. Additionally, Synesthetic art may refer to either art created by synesthetes or art created to elicit synesthetic experience in the general audience.

Jack Hamilton Bush was a Canadian abstract painter. A member of Painters Eleven, his paintings are associated with the Color Field movement and Post-painterly Abstraction. Inspired by Henri Matisse and American abstract expressionist painters such as Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis, Bush encapsulated joyful yet emotional feelings in his vibrant paintings, comparing them to jazz music. Clement Greenberg described him as a "supreme colorist", along with Kenneth Noland in 1984. Bush explained that capturing the feeling of a subject rather than its likeness was

a hard step for the art loving public to take, not to have the red look like a side of a barn but to let it be the red for its own sake and how it exists in the environment of that canvas.
