Incumbent Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards won re-election to a second term, defeating Republican businessman Eddie Rispone. Edwards became the first Democratic Governor of Louisiana to win re-election to a second consecutive term in 44 years since Edwin Edwards in 1975. It was the closest Louisiana gubernatorial election since 1979.

These six off-year races featured special elections to the 113th United States Congress to fill vacancies due to resignations in the United States House of Representatives. Two were due to Congressmen taking seats in the United States Senate, one resigned to take jobs in the private sector, one resigned to take a job in the public sector, and one resigned due to an impending federal indictment regarding misuse of campaign funds.

Tanner Daniel Magee is a criminal defense lawyer from downtown Houma in Terrebonne Parish in south Louisiana, who is served as a Republican member of the Louisiana House of Representatives for District 53. On January 11, 2016, he succeeded fellow Republican Lenar Whitney, whom he unseated in the runoff election held on November 21, 2015. He was re-elected in the primaries on October 12, 2019, having no challengers. On January 13, 2020 he became Speaker pro tempore of the Louisiana House of Representatives, a position he held until 2024.
